A Guide to ArtPrize® Trademarks
ArtPrize belongs to everyone who takes part in it. But our trademarks belong to the ArtPrize organization alone. To protect our identity, we ask that everyone who wants to use our name and/or logo do two things:
1. Ask for our permission. (It’s legally required.) 2. Follow the guidelines below.
Should you have any questions about using our name, logo, or other marks, feel free to contact us, and we’ll be happy to walk you through it.
ArtPrize Seven participants can use their assigned participant icon as shown on pages 3 and 6 of these Brand Guidelines without seeking additional permissions.

If you are not an authorized user of our mark(s) and/or do not fall into one of these user types, you may not use our mark(s).
Moreover, for artists, venues, sponsors, registration locations and merchants, your right to use the specified mark(s) ends January 1, 2016, unless you clearly list the year of your participation (e.g., you may continue to use “ArtPrize® Seven Sponsor,” but not the stylized “ArtPrize®” after the year 2015, unless you have a multi-year sponsorship agreement).
Your right to use our marks is solely for promoting your participation in, your support of, and your involvement in the ArtPrize event. Therefore, you may not put any ArtPrize mark on products that you wish to sell or to charge an admission fee or to require a cover charge. You may place any permitted mark on your website or email signature only if the mark links to our website, www.artprize.org, and the logo is removed one month after your participation in the ArtPrize event ends.
ArtPrize may unconditionally revoke the above rights, including your right to use any of its marks at any time. Grounds for this revocation include failing to comply with the rules here or in our Style Guide.
If you are an authorized user of one of the ArtPrize mark(s) you must present them in accordance with the Style Guide. If you do not follow the usage rules, ArtPrize will instruct that you discontinue using its marks, even if you otherwise have permission to do so.

4. ArtPrize: In short, within a sentence: ArtPrize, the radically open international art competition
5. ArtPrize: Single sentence: ArtPrize is a radically open, independently organized international art competition, open to any artist and decided by public vote and expert jury.
6. ArtPrize: Short descriptive paragraph: ArtPrize is a radically open, independently organized international art competition. Registered artists and venues connect online at artprize.org and agree to present the artwork for public display. The public votes using free mobile apps, text messages and the web to distribute a $200,000 grand prize and $50,000 in category awards, while an additional $200,000 grand prize and $62,500 in category awards are decided by expert jury. ArtPrize Seven takes place September 23 – October 11.
7. ArtPrize: Short colorful paragraph: ArtPrize is a radically open, independently organized international art competition. Occurring annually, the 19-day competition turns three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, into an open playing field for art and creative expression. At ArtPrize, everyone is invited to find a voice in the conversation about what art is, and why art matters. It’s unorthodox, highly disruptive, and undeniably intriguing to the art world and the public alike.

8. ArtPrize: Long descriptive paragraph: ArtPrize is a radically open, independently organized international art competition and 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. What ArtPrize is
ArtPrize is an international art competition, open to any artist and decided by public vote and expert jury, promoting critical dialogue and collaboration throughout the year.
1. ArtPrize is an international art competition. a. ArtPrize awards $500,000 decided by both public vote and expert jury. b. ArtPrize awards two of the world’s largest cash prizes for art, one decided solely by public vote, the other decided by expert jury. ($200,000 each) c. ArtPrize is the world’s largest art competition based on daily attendance, prize amounts, number of artists and venues. i. ArtPrize has the highest daily attendance (20,000) of any art event in the world as reported by The Art Newspaper. d. ArtPrize is a 19-day event. e. ArtPrize takes place annually in Grand Rapids, Michigan. f. ArtPrize begins on the third or fourth Wednesday in September and concludes on the first or second Sunday in October.
2. ArtPrize is radically open. a. The openness of ArtPrize is a radical departure from the centralized, or “top down” model of organization and curation traditionally used by the contemporary art world. ArtPrize is open to any artist over the age of 18 and any venue within the 3 sq. mile ArtPrize boundary. ArtPrize also awards $250,000 through an open public vote.
3. ArtPrize is independently organized. a. Artists and Venues self-register on artprize.org, then search and discover each other online. When a Venue and Artist “connect” a hosting agreement is signed, confirming that the Artist will show their work at that specific ArtPrize Venue.

What ArtPrize is (continued)
4. ArtPrize is decided by public vote and expert jury. a. Public Vote: Using the ArtPrize mobile apps, text message and online at artprize.org, ArtPrize voters have cast more than 2 million votes for art since 2009. Voting takes place in two rounds. Round one is open voting, where the public can vote for any (or all) of their favorite entries in the competition. In round two, the public votes on the five most popular pieces in each of four categories, a total of 20 entries. b. Expert Jury: Each year, ArtPrize invites eight jurors to provide expert critique and award a total of $250,000 in prizes. i. Category Jurors: Five jurors, each with the help of a Grand Rapids-based assistant juror, will assess all the works entered in their respective category. The four artist entry categories are: 2-D, 3-D, Time Based and Installation. The jurors select a shortlist of five nominees, one of which will win the $12,500 category award. The fifth category juror will select a shortlist of five Venues, one of which will win the $12,500 Outstanding Venue award. ii. Grand Prize Jurors: A panel of three jurors will choose one of the 20 artist entries nominated to one of the four category juror’s shortlists. The selected artist will win the $200,000 juried grand prize.

What ArtPrize is not
1. ArtPrize is not an art fair. a. Art fairs exist to sell artwork to its attendees. While many artists and venues do sell artwork at ArtPrize, the event’s primary mission is that of an international art competition.
2. ArtPrize is not an art festival (even though it is quite festive.) a. Generally, Art festivals are centrally organized events curated at some level to serve a specific audience. ArtPrize however, is independently organized (or decentralized) and exists to create opportunity for artists and venues to share, explore and experiment with their work in non-traditional spaces and without the oversight or direction of a centralized curatorial voice.

Code Pro is a font family inspired by the original Sans Serif fonts like Avant Garde or Futura, but with a modern twist. It is clean, elegant and straight-to-the-point.
It is always used in sentence case, never in all caps. It is to be kerned tightly. In applications (ex: email body copy) when Code Pro is not available, Century Gothic is an acceptable alternative.

Writing About ArtPrize Seven
The seventh annual (2015) ArtPrize event is formally called “ArtPrize Seven.”
You’ll notice the use of the arabic numeral “7” in design elements but rarely in copy. In copy, the arabic numeral “7” is only used in social media (#ArtPrize7) and similar instances where shorthand is acceptable.
