of Nutrilite founder Carl Rehnborg, introduces her own line of cosmetics.

1960s• Amway acquires

Prolonged exposure to UV rays results in freckles, dark spots, and aging.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It indicates a level of protection against Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. The number following SPF is a measurement of how much longer one can stay under the sun before getting a visible sunburn when compared with the time to burn unprotected skin.

PA is a Japanese designation for protection against Ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation. Similar to SPF designation, the number of + signs following PA indicates the extended sunlight-exposure time when compared with unprotected skin.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, HEALTHY SKINCurious about what’s going on inside your body? Consult your skin. It’s the external expression of your internal health. Keep yours radiant and acne resistant with these healthy tips:

• Commit to a skincare regimen, every day. No exceptions, as even one day or night missed can trigger a breakout. Keep that regimen consistent. Switching from product to product could cause skin to react even more as it tries to adjust to the change of a new regimen.

• Keep stress in check. Stress is emotional and physical – and both can trigger acne. Stress creates an inflammatory response in the body that can cause the walls of clogged pores to break. When this happens, skin exhibits redness around the broken pore and an influx of sebum – or a zit. Further, stress pushes the adrenal gland into overdrive, producing more androgens (male hormones), which can lead to more acne. Exercise, meditation, deep breathing, and prayer are excellent stress reducers.

• Eat healthy. We really are what we eat, and a low-glycemic diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables and omega-3 fats is best. Consider supplementing with a probiotic like Nutrilite® IntestiFlora 7 and 30–50 mg of zinc gluconate per day. Limit fat and sugar, as grease clogs pores and excessive sugar causes insulin production, which in turn, causes the body to emit more hormones, including androgens.

• Move your body. Cardio reduces stress, since it gets your heart going, which pushes more oxygen to your brain. Get moving three times a week, for 30 minutes or more, minimally.

• Get a good night’s sleep. There is no magic number – sleep needs are individual. The average adult needs 7–9 hours every night. Teens and tweens need slightly more, up to 11 hours. Reducing your stress reduces your chances of breaking out. Also, before you work out, remove your makeup and – likewise, shortly after you work out – cleanse your face to remove sweat and oil. It is best to cleanse immediately after working out, before your body cools down.

WHAT CAUSES HYPERPIGMENTATION? The cause is the excess production of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for producing color in the body, from skin to hair to eyes. Melanin is produced by melanocytes at the lower layer of the epidermis. UV light stimulates the melanocytes as part of skin’s natural defense mechanism against excess UV exposure. However, UV light and other environmental aggressors also can cause irritation and inflammation, which can negatively affect these melanocytes and trigger an overproduction of melanin. When melanocytes become hyperactive, the result is hyperpigmentation.

THE SCIENCE OF SKINThe body’s largest organ, the skin acts as a protective, dynamic interface between it and the environment. The appearance of the skin is a reflection of health and a measure of age and beauty. Every square centimeter contains a complicated pattern of millions of cells and hundreds of glands, nerve endings, and blood vessels that can be divided into three distinct compartments.

Skin health and vitality have been a focus of Artistry scientists for decades. Our skincare collections target the deepest surface layers of the skin’s epidermis, since these outer layers provide the greatest protection to the live skin cells beneath them. When these surface layers are healthy, skin looks naturally even, incredibly smooth, and youthfully radiant.

Epidermis: Protective Outer Layer

Cells here are constantly flaking off and being renewed. The main cells of the epidermis are keratinocytes, which produce keratin. This tough protein is a basic component of hair, skin, and nails that helps create an intact, waterproof barrier.

Dermis: Most Critical to Aging

Just below the epidermis, the dermis regulates body temperature and nourishes the epidermis. The dermis is primarily composed of the extracellular matrix, a scaffolding network of fibers. These fibers, including collagen and elastin, are produced by cells in the dermis called fibroblasts and secreted into the tissue environment.1 It’s here where changes are critical to the formation of wrinkles.

Subcutaneous Tissue: Protective Layer

This fatty bottom skin layer helps protect the body from injury while helping to hold in body heat.

Healthy-looking skin depends on the fitness of its components, especially cells, along with the proteins and extracellular matrix components these cells produce. Fibroblasts in the dermis, for instance, produce important matrix fibers such as collagen and elastin, which give skin its strength and flexibility and contribute to its youthful, healthy appearance. In the epidermis, the rapid renewal of keratinocytes is critical for the radiance of skin.2 A driving force of visible aging is a change in the lifecycle of epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts.

Cellular proteins known as sirtuins play a role in aging, too – and altering sirtuin activation may delay the development of these signs altogether. Studies have shown that humans have several different sirtuins, named SIRT1.3 In skin cells, sirtuins act as a “youth switch.” When the switch is on, SIRT1 helps cells repair visible damage and boosts the production of important proteins for maintaining youthful-looking skin. When the switch is off and SIRT1 activity is low, cells can’t combat environmental stress to repair damage, and the production of these proteins is reduced. The Artistry Scientific Advisory Board agrees that sirtuin research has perhaps the greatest potential to positively impact skin cells and delay visible aging.

L-Carnosine – A dipeptide that occurs naturally in the body. The primary function is to help scavenge free radicals.

Lipids – Fat or fat-like substances that are insoluble in water.

Macadamia Seed Oil – Natural oil that helps condition the skin after a peel treatment.

Mucor Miehei Mushroom Extract – A proteolytic enzyme extracted from the fungus Rhizomucor miehei. The skin produces various proteolytic enzymes to activate the normal desquamation process, or skin peeling. miehei mushroom extract has a strong pH dependency and is only active at pH levels below that of the skin.

Peptides – A minute piece of protein in a chain that increases the elasticity and firmness of the skin’s cell.

Proteins – Biological molecules that are encoded into genetic materials. Proteins like collagen are composed of amino acids and form the physical structure of skin.

Roxisomes® – Contain a natural botanical extract from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The extract is encapsulated in specially engineered liposomes to enhance delivery to the skin.

Sirtuins – Natural youth proteins shown to strengthen and extend the lifespan of skin cells.
