Tunisian handicraft is a product of more than three thousand years of history and an important multi-ethnic influx. This unique mixture of cultures made Tunisia, with its strategic geographical location in the Mediterranean, the core of some great civilizations and producer of beautiful handicraft collections.

This heritage can be experienced first-hand in the variety of products selected for the February show. Traditional and modern designs of handmade carpets, table and kitchenware ceramics, textiles, olive wood, intricate mosaics, hand woven purses, baskets and mats.

Behind every selected product there is a true story. These stories highlight not only the history of the product but also its impact on the artisans and their quality of life; they are stories about equality and dignity for all people. Tunisian handicrafts get support from the government and provide employment for over 120,000 people. Each region has its own specialty created with care, love and quality.

Content + CommerceColvin English, Co-Founder, ByHand Consulting

ByHand Consulting believes business can be a tool for social, economic and cultural good. The latest US market trends show a growing number of US consumers feel the same. ByHand nurtures overseas artisan enterprises in their efforts to improve the lives of the artisans and communities. The market is responding as demand for handmade goods is at an all time high.

As the new millennium comes into it’s own, there are great opportunities for artisan products with a renaissance for handmade products expanding from the food on our table to the items in our homes. Handmade, Sustainable, Artisanal, Local, and Authentic are some of the terms being used to emphasize the notion that consumers are interested in supporting small businesses and their efforts to have a positive impact on our culture and our world. “Content and Commerce” is rising for all aspects of our consumer society.

But what does this mean? Content and Commerce?

As the new generation of Millenials becomes a dominant consumer presence, their backgrounds and desires are influencing buying trends. Millenials are driven to change the world with every aspect of their lives. They realize the power of their purchases and seek to affect change with where and how they spend their money.

US retailers and wholesalers seek to capitalize on this growing trend by partnering with socially responsible producers and suppliers, including overseas artisan enterprises. The artisan story behind the product is now an integral part of market value.

Consumers are looking for products that are both beautiful and have content – a story, a purpose, an impact. Consumers are willing to pay more for products supporting the causes they cherish. Wholesale markets such as NY NOW™ are at the front of responding to this trend with a variety of resources showcasing Handmade. Handmade Global Design and Designer Maker have been staples of NY NOW and highlight goods made by hand, both in the US and around the world. Artisan Resource at Pier 94 offers importers the opportunity to meet directly with international artisan enterprises, many of which share a social mission.

The desires of the market are changing and sellers must address the issue of how their goods impact the world if they want to remain relevant to the buyers of today and tomorrow. We see this trend continuing for many years and across all sectors of the market from the smallest boutique to the largest retailers in the country.

People who work with their hands do not often make the headlines: their names and talents are almost never proclaimed in 24-point type. The products of their looms, kilns, forges, sewing needles, adzes, dye-pots and sandpapers, bring daily satisfaction to both hand and eye, but artisans themselves usually stay in the background.

Not at GLM, the creators of Handmade® Global Design and Artisan Resource™ at NY NOW™. Since 1985, GLM has demonstrated its commitment to craftspeople around the world not just with floorspace and marketing muscle, but with results. GLM’s spotlight on the handmade world has brought opportunity and income to hundreds of thousands of skilled artisans – and insightful commerce to even greater numbers of wholesalers, retailers and consumers. 2014 is no exception, as many dozens of handmade booths at NY NOW will attest.

As part of spreading the word about today’s handmade world, GLM has sponsored twelve articles on www.handeyemagazine.com about Artisan Resource participants. Like the selection included in this directory, each article delves into the people, materials, processes, and cultures that make the show so inspiring. Visit us online or come to see us at the Show. We hope to see you there.

Uzbek Riches: Ikats to the MassesUntil the first quarter of the 20th century, Uzbekistan’s tailors, designers and embroiderers were part of a guild system. When the region came under Soviet rule, Uzbek ethnic identity was repressed resulting in decreased output of handmade textiles. Happily, the 1991 breakdown of the Soviet Union saw a resurgence of Uzbek textile tradition.

Bibi Hanum, founded by photographer Muhayo Aliyeva, brings those textile traditions to the 21st century by creating clothing and accessories using handwoven ikat fabrics made by master craftsmen in the Fergana Valley. Aliyeva explains that she provides clothing designs and materials to local seamstresses. “I select the appropriate fabric and draw the patterns on paper if necessary. Most of the time, artisans in the regions can replicate my drawings and embroider according to the design. We also use traditional machine embroidery for our garments.”

For inspiration, Aliyeva combs through old ikat books and photographs to recreate or come up with a variation. “The weavers can replicate the design and weave the fabric for us. I wanted to try suzani patterns on ikat. The fabric is still being woven and hopefully the results will be beautiful.”

The company employs 15 women artisans who work in the workshop. When large orders come in, Aliyeva hires more women who work from home. “We order large quantities of ikat from Margilan which creates economic opportunities for many weavers. We also help women in Urgut village in Samarkand by ordering large amounts of hand-embroidered braids for our garments and accessories,” she explained

Last year, Bibi Hanum exhibited in Santa Fe’s International Folk Art Market with a line of revived kaftans. “The income from the market helped us recreate more ikat designs and expand the assortment of products we produce. We were able to bring several more women to work with us since we got more orders after the market,” said Aliyeva.

This winter, Bibi Hanum will be attending Artisan Resource at NY NOW™ at Pier 94 from February 1-4 with the hope of meeting new contacts in the US retail market. The company will be displaying embroidered men’s ties, table runners, pillow covers, ikat purses and bags, decorative ikat jackets, embroidered tunics and robes.

Africa Works: Oneness Handcrafted in a South African Township

In a small township of Alexandra, South Africa, an organization called Africa Works is situated just 15 minutes outside of the heart of Johannesburg. This town has a long history of conflict, hardship, and extreme poverty but Africa Works is doing its best to break this cycle by providing hundreds of artisans with income generation opportunities. Africa Works is taking a holistic approach to affect the lives of their employees and are recognized for their hand woven and crocheted bags. All employees are part of the skills development program, which offers classes in business, crochet, woodworking, mechanic skills, gardening, weaving, and welding. This social enterprise is not only empowering individuals, but giving them financial freedom so they can improve their families’ lives and affect generations to come.

Project coordinator Katy Roberston states, “All products are entirely handmade. Weavers collect recycled pieces of fabric and/or plastic scraps which are then sort and cut into different pieces, depending on the shape and size. Each bags starts with a base which is woven, lined with traditional African material, and hand-sewn. Every product is made carefully and with

pride—quality is of the utmost importance to us as well as our members. Our crocheted bags are also extremely popular and they are crafted using organic hand-dyed and hand-spun yarn, which we source from a community project in Cape Town. Dedicated volunteers train community members on a weekly basis in the techniques of crochet.”

In African culture, the principle of ‘ubuntu’ is loosely translated as ‘human-ness’ or ‘oneness’ and is deeply grounded in the ethos of Africa Works. Katy adds, “This philosophy relies on communal thinking and decision-making. It is a beautiful principled model of inclusiveness and respect. Art and creativity is part of everyday life in South Africa, from the bright colors people wear to the handing down of traditional artisan skills and techniques. I believe that by cultivating color and pride, this leads to a vibrant community.”

While visiting Artisan Resource at NY NOW™ this February 1-4, 2014 be sure to check out the debut of Africa Works’ collection.

Entoto Beth Artisans: Income opportunities via craft for the Women of Entoto

Located in the outskirts of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Entoto Beth Artisan is an organization started in 2008 by Beza International Ministries in response to help women living with HIV/AIDS within the community of Entoto Mountain. The organization’s mission was to create income-generating opportunities via craft and teaching life skills instead of simply handing out aid.

Handicrafts, primarily jewelry, has been the major source of income for many of the 131 artisans who are employed within the organization. The unique pieces are created from used artillery shells and scrap metal found scattered throughout the former war zones of Ethiopia, recycled tires, but also Ethiopian coffee beans.

According to Bethlhem Tekeste, many of the designs are inspired by the master jewelry artists from Ethiopia and other parts of the world. These designers are invited to come to Entoto Mountain to teach various workshops focusing on technique and process.

The bead-making is a simple process explains Tekeste, “The beads [shell casings and coffee beans] are collected from the Northern Ethiopia countryside and then the first level artisans in our workshop string the beads, passing them along to the second level of artisans who puts the finishing touches to the jewelry. Afterwards, the

finished products are checked for any quality problems and packed for shipping.”

Entoto Beth Artisans also provides a number of literacy and math classes to the women artisans, in addition to programs for parents that center on nutrition and discipline but also basic life skills like health and hygiene. For the children, the organization offers an after-school tutoring progam.

Entoto Beth Artisans will be exhibiting jewelry and a new line of leather goods in addition to colorful hand-woven baskets at Artisan Resource at NY NOW™ from February 1-4.
