  • The purpose of this study was to identify polystyrene foam biodegradable bacteria from landfill soil. Mineral salt medium with polystyrene foam as the only carbon source was used to enrich bacteria in this experiment. After 1 months of incubation, surface of polys tyrene foam observed by us ing compound microscope and scanning electron microscope. The consortium of microbe were identify by 16s Ribosomal DNA that detected by DGGE technique to study the changing and continuation of microbe population in each weeks. The result show that some of bacteria able to grow in condition that polystyrene was the sole carbon source detected by the continuation that show in microbial fingerprint. Some traces of degradation were found on the surface of polystyrene foam when compared to the control group which are the broth without bacteria. This research is in the stage of identify and sequencing the DNA of possible bacteria and testing back on degradability.
