ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE
Last week we learned about what a
‘continuous line’ drawing is. You have
researched some different artists who
have used continuous line and should
have found lots of examples of this
techniques online
A quick re-cap……
Kris Tappaniers
Mick Burton
Alberto Giacometti
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE
Watch this video of an artist making a
continuous line drawing of himself.
Look carefully at how he uses his pen
to travel around the face without lifting
it up
How to make a continuous line drawing……

Look at how the face end up
being split into lots of
sections in these examples
too
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE The task for today……
We would like you to make 3
continuous line drawings of
your face today (we will be
adding colour to these later on)
To do this you will first need:
Paper x 3 sheets
Pencils / pens
A mirror OR a photo of yourself
(printed or on screen)
Look at the next slide before
you start drawing!
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE Hints and tips for your 3
drawings……
Try Pencil for your first
drawing if you’re a little
scared of pen straight
away
Make each one a
different pose if you
can
In one of them try to
indicate background
elements too
Go slowly and press
lightly at first then build
up darker as you go
Don’t worry if they don’t look
exactly like you! (can you
guess who these 3 are of?)
Show your neck – don’t
have a floating head!
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE Now for some colour……
If you have time then let’s add some
colour to your drawings!
Choose some of the ways below in order to
make your drawings even more visually
interesting:
Geometric lines in some areas
More line work in bright colourful pens or colouring
pencils
Block some areas in with a colour
Add some coffee or watercolour into your piece
Look at the following 3
slides for my examples!
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE Examples using colour……
I worked into my pencil drawing with a
little bit of pen, coffee (which a
crushed up and then sprinked into
watery areas) and some watercolour
(not realistic colours but I put darker
tones into areas of shadow)
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE Examples using colour……
I worked into one of my biro drawings
with some bright red pen and also
added some extra black line work.
Some lines are geometric and some
are not. This has given me a really
abstract design
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – CONTINUOUS LINE Examples using colour……
In my final pen drawing I chose a colour set
with a light/mid/dark in it. I then added a lot
more scribble into my piece – yellow for lighter
areas, green in some mid tone areas and blue
for darker areas. I also worked into the
background more with pen

We hope you enjoyed the tasks for today!
Make sure you keep your work safe and
together as we would very much like to see
it all when we get back
We will be doing lots more drawing tasks in
the next few weeks – so keep all of your
drawings together and later this term we will
be showing you how ideas for making them
into a sketchbook
