This project is in fulfillment of Iowa Code (Iowa Code 304A, sections 8-14). TIMELINE Submission Deadline: April 2, 2015 Selection of Finalist: May 1, 2015 Installation Deadline: March 1, 2016 PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND GOALS The Art Building Replacement is a FEMA project that replaces the 1935 Art Building that was heavily damaged by the Iowa River flood in 2008. The building is designed by Steven Holl Architects in New York - the same architect that designed the award-winning Art Building West - and will be built north of Art Building West along River Street. Construction of the building started in the summer of 2013 and will open in the fall of 2016 bringing the entire School of Art & Art History back to the University of Iowa main campus. The UI was the first to bring artists and scholars together in an academic context in the 1920s. This “Iowa Idea,” became the model for many arts programs around the nation; its goal was to train artists within a liberal arts environment combining studio courses in the practice of art with the history and theory of art. The School of Art & Art History has remained true to its historic mission even as the national trend favored separation. This tradition has endured to the present, with consistently top-ranked programs. In addition, the UI famously pioneered the embrace of artistic achievement as grounds for advanced degrees.
