Many airports throughout the world have joint commercial-militaryoperations. Runways at these airports often are equipped witharresting gear systems for tactical military aircraft to use forlanding. These systems pose a potential damage and safety hazardto commercial airplanes that use the same runways. Airportsand airlines can take steps to help ensure safe commercial opera-tions under such circumstances. Measures include writing airportprocedures specifically for commercial airplane operations,

modifying existing arresting systems, reducing declared landingand takeoff distances, and increasing inspections of airplaneswith nosegear spray and gravel deflectors.
