Around Town 3 THURSDAY 31 AUGUST 2017 CHENNAI NT Bureau Chennai, Aug 31: As oral cancer accounts for highest percentage of cancer in men and a third among women, Rajan Oral Cancer Centre (ROCC) was launched here on Wednesday to address the issue, including early detection of the disease. To spread awareness about the disease, Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, released ‘Mouth Cancer Self Examination’ animated video designed by ROCC. ROCC is named after Dr B P Rajan, founder, Rajan Dental Hospital, who was an eminent dental surgeon in the State. ‘Our primary idea is to educate the public on self-evaluating periodically for early signs of oral cancer, and to approach their dentists as soon as possibly when needed,’ said ROCC medical director Dr Gunaseelan Rajan. Oral cancer is largely due to use of tobacco in different forms such as pan products and gutkha. It accounts for more than 35 per cent of all cancers among men in India. The bigger concern is the alarming increase in the younger population, he said. ROCC consists of a team of doctors to treat and prevent oral cancer, said head and neck oncologist Dr Mathan Mohan. ‘Oral cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in India,’ he added. ROCC has comprehensive oral cancer management which includes diagnostics, surgical/radition/medical oncology, pain and palliative care and psycho-oncology. Speaking on the occasion, Neerja Malika, a cancer survivor elaborated on DOCE (Dectect Oral Cancer Early) which provides simple steps for self examination of oneself and to identify the presence of any early signs of cancer. ‘There is a need for more awareness of the disease,’ she said. ROCC is located at Dr Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore. A Whatsapp number +91-97897 22033 is available for enquiry about oral cancer. ‘Oral cancer alarming among youngsters’ Rajan Oral Cancer Centre launched Self-examination animated video released for public Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, releasing ‘Mouth Cancer Self Examination’ animated video designed by ROCC in Chennai on Wednesday. With two projects, students of Panchayat Union Middle School, Mamandur, Kanchipuram, are becoming protectors of environment. The school which has a strength of 130 has begun making ‘seed bags’ and planting palm trees. Secondary Grade Teacher, V Kavitha, who initiated the project, said, ‘We have introduced the concept of seed bags. If a student on way to school or while going back home finds a dying plant or tree, he can bring it to school. We use plastic packets that once contained oil, salt and dal. These are washed and holes at the bottom of the cover using nails. The cover is then filled with organic waste, cow dung and red soil.’ These seed bags are available at the school for free. The dying plants or tree saplings are re- planted and nurtured. ‘After this, we give it free of cost to those interested in taking care of it,’ adds Kavitha. Another project that is being implemented is to grow palm tress near water bodies. ‘We have begun planting palm trees on the banks of water sources like a lake, pool and river. This will strengthen the banks and prevent soil erosion. It will help increase rainfall and maintain the water level. I have purchased 1,700 seeds from Tiruvannamalai district, each costing Re 1. The local body has come forward to help in the project as well. We began the tree planting drive from Monday and, our target is to plant 3,000 palm trees.’ Principal of the school, Jestin Anthoniyammal, said, ‘This is activity-based learning: students are responding and cooperating with the projects. Through this we are creating an awareness and teaching students to protect the environment.’ Event A family event, where children participating will see a motoring adventure, an observational questionnaire revolving around the waters of our city and other tasks that the organising team has kept a secret.
