Literacy/English

• Descriptive writing task-Travelling

• Imagine you are on holiday in Thailand and you come across this street. Write a descriptive piece on your experience.

• Things to consider- The 5 senses: What can you hear, see, smell, taste, and touch.

• Descriptive devices- Similes, metaphors, personification etc

• It might help to use a brainstorm thinking frame to identify everything you can see in the photo. For example, motorbikes and people talking. How might this sound?

Numeracy/Maths

• The Thai currency (money) is called the Thai Baht, and it is more inflated than ours. This means that for every £1 we have, theirs is more. At the moment, £1 of our money, is ฿39. Taking this into consideration, were going to work out the price of some things in Thailand.

• Q1- If a sandwich in the UK costs £2.40, how much would it cost in Thailand?

• Q2- A pair of sunglasses costs £5 in a Thai shop, how much would this cost in Baht?

• Now you’re ready to go on holiday!

Art and Design

• Traditional Thai art is primarily composed of Buddhist art and scenes from the Indian epics. Traditional Thai sculpture almost exclusively depicts images of the Buddha, being very similar with the other styles from Southeast Asia, such as Khmer.

• It has an amazing use of repetitive patterns, symbols, and imagery, which give a magnificent feel.

• See the next slide for some examples.

The next slide will have a Buddha picture, which you can paint, colour, or use any medium to create. You can make your own as well if you like!

Science- Smith Dharmasaroja

• Smith Dharmasaroja is a Thai government official.

• In 1998, while serving as a meteorologist, he predicted that an earthquake and tsunami were going to occur “For sure”. He advocated warning systems but was not listened to.

• After the 2004 boxing day tsunami, which killed over 200,000 people, he was recalled from retirement and put in charge of creating defence and warning systems.

Science-Tsunamis

• An earthquake generates a tsunami if it is of sufficient force and there is violent movement of the earth causing substantial and sudden displacement of a massive amount of water.

• A tsunami is not a single wave but a series of waves, also known as a wave train. The first wave in a tsunami is not necessarily the most destructive. Tsunamis are not tidal waves.

• Tsunami waves can be very long (as much as 60 miles, or 100 kilometers) and be as far as one hour apart. They are able to cross entire oceans without great loss of energy. The Indian Ocean tsunami traveled as much as 3,000 miles (nearly 5,000 kilometers) to Africa, arriving with sufficient force to kill people and destroy property.

Science- Tsunamis

• The waves we typically see in oceans, lakes and other bodies of water are usually formed by wind. These waves are just disturbances of the surface and do not extend more than a few meters underwater. Tsunamis differ from normal waves in that they are disturbances that stretch all the way to the floor of the ocean, which can be many kilometers deep.

• What Causes a Tsunami?

• A tsunami is formed when the sea floor moves abruptly. This is usually caused by an earthquake, but can also be caused by volcanoes and landslides.

Question 1- How and why are tsunamis different from normal waves?

Question 2- What are the three main causes of tsunamis?

Final Task- design a poster showing and labelling the differences

between a tsunami and a normal wave. Remember to include

diagrams as to how they form.

History

• Thailand is the only Southeast Asian nation not to have been colonised by a Western power, in part because Britain and France agreed in 1896 to make the Chao Phraya valley a buffer state.

• A buffer state is a country between to rival powers, created to deter one another from invading or starting any hostile action.

• In 1917, Siam (Thailand) joined World War I on the side of the Allies as there were concerns that the Allies might punish neutral countries.

• In 1940, there was a decree changing the name of the country from "Siam" to "Thailand“ and On 8 December 1941, the Empire of Japan launched an invasion of Thailand, and Thailand and Japan signed a military alliance with a secret protocol, wherein Tokyo agreed to help Thailand regain territories lost to the British and French. Subsequently, the Thai government declared war on the United States and the United Kingdom.

• The US and the UK did not recognise this declaration, and it was mainly forgotten about following the war.

• After the US joined the Vietnam War in 1961, there was a secret agreement wherein the US promised to protect Thailand.

• The period brought about increasing modernisation and Westernisation of Thai society.

Facts about the Thai economy

• With a relatively well-developed infrastructure, a free-enterprise economy, and generally pro-investment policies, Thailand is highly dependent on international trade, with exports accounting for about two thirds of GDP. Thailand’s exports include electronics, agricultural commodities, automobiles and parts, and processed foods. The industry and service sectors produce about 90% of GDP. The agricultural sector, comprised mostly of small-scale farms, contributes only 10% of GDP but employs about one third of the labour force. Thailand has attracted an estimated 3.0-4.5 million migrant workers, mostly from neighbouring countries.

• Over the last few decades, Thailand has reduced poverty substantially. In 2013, the Thai Government implemented a nationwide 300 baht (roughly $10) per day minimum wage policy and deployed new tax reforms designed to lower rates on middle-income earners.

• Thailand’s economy is recovering from slow growth during the years since the 2014 coup. Thailand’s economic fundamentals are sound, with low inflation, low unemployment, and reasonable public and external debt levels. Tourism and government spending - mostly on infrastructure and short-term stimulus measures – have helped to boost the economy, and The Bank of Thailand has been supportive, with several interest rate reductions.

• Much of Thailand's economy is centred in Bangkok, the country's capital. Lets look at the next slide to learn more about the city.

Bangkok

• Bangkok is the capital and most populous city of Thailand having a population of over eight million. How much is this as a percentage of their total population?

• The city grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s and now exerts a significant impact on Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society.

Bangkok

• Bangkok traces its roots to a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, which eventually grew and became the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Bangkok was at the heart of the modernization of Siam, later renamed Thailand, during the late-19th century, as the country faced pressures from the West.

• Look at the images on the next few slides. What does it tell you about life in Bangkok? Complete the worksheet that goes with it. Maybe even discuss with someone you live with, you might have different answers!

• When you have completed this, write a paragraph about your observations. What can you tell? Why? Is this similar to cities where we live or different?
