A friendly reminder: More and more people are becoming sensitive to perfumes - even natural ones. (For

example, my mother gets migraines when she's exposed to any perfume.)

anyone discomfort.

Handmade Vanilla Perfume Oil Recipe

Summary:

A basic way to create your own base note oil or a fragrant body oil to be used alone.

Ingredients:

5 whole, dried vanilla beans (Moroccan are best) available from Healthfood stores

Highest proof vodka you can find or Everclear

1/4 oz Jojoba Oil

Instructions:

In a tinted glass container, slice open vanilla beans and scrape out the inner black fragrant paste as well as you

can. Use as many vanilla beans as desired. About five beans will make ¼ oz (7,4 ml) oil, so 20 beans is good

for 1 oz. (29,57 ml) (It is best to do this when the vanilla beans are as fresh as possible, usually right after you

have bought them from the store, or store beans immediately in vacume sealed jars until ready to use.) Cut up

the remaining outer shells of vanilla beans into small pieces and add to the glass container. Pour alcohol over

beans, just enough to soak and cover them leaving about 1/4 inch liquid free on top. Too much alcohol will

leave an alcoholic smell to the end product. Leave tinted bottle in a cool, dark area to sit, covered, and extract

the vanilla essence for about 2 to 3 weeks. Open and agitate every so often, checking the odor for the strength

of vanilla scent. At this point, you may if you wish heat the mixture instead of letting it sit for 3 weeks. Heating

often speeds up the extraction process, and it is possible to accomplish the complete extraction within a few

days instead of 3 weeks. Put the mixture in an open glass container, such as a pyrex measuring cup or beaker,

and heat it over an electric range or hotplate--never over a flame or inside an oven, as alcohol fumes are

flammable--and always in a well ventilated area (windows open). Heat on low for one hour, keeping a close eye

on it and stirring occasionally. Let the liquid cool in the tinted glass container for a few days to a week in a cool,

dark place, such as a cabinet. When the scent of the alcohol has faded and the vanilla scent is strong, test the

extraction on your skin and wait a few seconds, then smell. If it doesn't have a distinct scent of vanilla, let it

stand another week in the cabinet. If it does have a distinct scent, strain alcohol using cheesecloth, a finely

grated tea strainer, or even a woman's pantyhose (white or nude). The pantyhose actually work the best and

strain out very fine particles quickly. The alcohol based liquid, though not the end product, can be utilized in

perfume making, as it is now a vanilla scented base note. Don't waste it. Take the particulate and vanilla pieces

Page 6: Aromatherapy Perfume Recipes

6

from the strainer and put back into tinted glass container, this time pouring jojoba oil over them. Use about

double the amount of joboba as there is vanilla bean slush. Leave this mixture to sit in a cool, dry place for

another week or until the oil is well scented with vanilla. Strain, and use oil as one would a fragrance oil, or as a

perfume of its own. In order not to be wasteful, the vanilla bean slush leftover in the strainer can be used again

and again in this manner, leaving it to sit in either alcohol or jojoba oil. Since it has been soaked adequately in

alcohol first, the vanilla beans have a stronger essence and can be added to oils easier than if they hadn't been

soaked in alcohol. Be creative and mix your homemade vanilla oil with other fragrances. Myrrh goes very well

with it, as well as sandalwood and some citrus notes.

Denise's Night Out Recipe

Summary:

Earthy, musky, with a hint of floral

Ingredients:

30 drops of oil of jasmine (absolute diluted in jojoba oil)

12 drops of essential oil of ylang-ylang

12 drops of essential oil of patchouli

1/2 oz vodka

Instructions:

Mix all oils together. Add vodka. Shake to blend. Let mellow a few days. Shake to use.

Some natural fixatives you may want to consider adding to your perfume are:

1. Sandalwood (Very popular, with good reason; woody, heady, seductive and smooth.)

2. Patchouli (Deep, spicy and musky; common in the 60’s- perhaps a little “hippyish”!?)

3. Oris Root (iris) (woody, faint violet undertones)

4. Vetiver (earthy, woody, soothing)

5. Vanilla- (lovely, a very common base for commercial perfume, although of course these are usually

synthetic, often blended with musks.)

6. Benzoin (sweet woods, undertones of vanilla and resin)

7. Cedarwood (gorgeous, fresh Christmas-tree type smell!)

8. Ylang Ylang (heady and floral, be sparing with this!)

9. Myrrh (exotic, heady, resinous, woody; use sparingly)

10. Francincense (woody, sappy, but lighter and fresher than many woody scents with almost floral undertones- very nice.)

Orange Oil to the Rescue! If you make a mistake and add a drop too much of one particular scent,

you could try adding a drop or two of Orange Oil- as it’s widely believed that Orange Oil has the unique

qualities of being able to cancel out mistakes in perfumery somewhat, toning them down. Personally, I

think there’s some truth in this!

Create Perfume

To build your own fragrance, it’s essential to first understand the way they’re structured. Using either essential

oils or fragrance oils (which may be synthetically or naturally derived), distinct scents are created by blending

top, middle and base notes. These “notes” are essentially three different levels of scent, each with varying rates

of evaporation.

Page 7: Aromatherapy Perfume Recipes

7

Top notes are those scents you first notice, but they are also the most volatile oils, dispersing and disappearing

the fastest. Middle notes are the moderators, linking the top and base notes together, determining which sort of

fragrance family a scent becomes — earthy, floral, spicy, woodsy, etc. Lastly, base notes, or fixatives, impart

the longest, fullest scent and are sourced from balsams, roots, resins and woods. An ideal ratio to aim for when

creating custom blends is one containing 30% top notes, 50% middle notes and 20% base notes. Here are a

few examples of scents from each note:

Base: Cedarwood, Cypress, Ginger, Patchouli, Pine, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Vetiver

Middle: Black Pepper, Cardamom, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Clove, Fir Needle, Jasmine, Juniper,

Lemongrass, Neroli, Nutmeg, Rose, Rosewood, Ylang-Ylang

Top: Basil, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Mint, Neroli, Rosemary, Sweet Orange

This list is hardly comprehensive. There are so many scents, each falling into different note categories. To see

what note classification a specific scent falls into, check out this helpful link on Aroma Web. If you have a

commercially prepared fragrance you particularly love, check out this link to see what notes are used, and then

experiment with re-creating it.

Owing to their different rates of evaporation, it stands to reason that a perfume’s fragrance will change over

time. The more it is exposed to light and air, the more quickly it will deteriorate, which is why proper storage is

essential. Here are several suggestions for maintaining the integrity and quality of your essential oils and

fragrance blends:

Store your fragrances and essential oils in dark-colored bottles out of direct sunlight.

Put the cap back on the oils as soon as you’ve removed the drops needed. Heat, light, oxygen and

moisture will compromise their quality and cause them to degrade.

If you are prone to skin sensitivity, test a small amount of your blend on your forearm for allergic

reactions before using it liberally.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and some can burn the skin if applied directly, so always use a

carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond or grape seed.

Always use glass or ceramic vessels when mixing and blending oils.

If stored properly, essential oils will retain their integrity for one year once opened.

Now, let’s get down to brass tacks and start mixing your custom eau de perfume!

The Goods

2 Tablespoons carrier oil, such as jojoba, sweet almond or grape seed oil

6 Tablespoons good quality vodka (I like Rain)

2 1/2 Tablespoons distilled or spring water (not tap water, though)

coffee filter

funnel

essential oils for blending (you’ll need separate oils for base, middle and top notes, totaling around 30

drops)

two dark-colored glass bottles, one for curing, one for storing (you don’t need both right away, though)

decorative perfume bottle, for gifting (optional)

The Deal

1. Begin by cleaning the bottles, either in your hottest setting in the dishwasher or with hot, soapy

water.

2. Place the bottles on a rimmed baking pan and dry in an oven set to 110ºC. Remove from the oven

once they are completely dry. Put a lid on one of the bottles (the one you’ll be using for storing) and set

it aside until you’ll need it, which will be anywhere from 48 hours to 6 weeks later.

Page 8: Aromatherapy Perfume Recipes

8

3. Place the carrier oil into one of the bottles.

4. Next, add the essential oils in the following order: the base notes, the middle notes and finally the top

notes. The number of drops used for each note is up to you, so it’s time to play! Just remember the

ideal ratio of 30% top, 50% middle and 20% base notes. Shoot for around 30 drops total given the

amount of carrier oil and vodka called for here.

5. Add the vodka. Place the lid atop the bottle and shake it vigorously for several minutes.

6. Allow the bottle to sit for 48 hours to 6 weeks. The scent will change over time, becoming strongest

around 6 weeks.

7. Check it regularly, and once you’re happy with it, add 2 tablespoons of spring water to the blend.

8. Give the bottle a good shake for one minute. Place a coffee filter into a funnel and transfer the

contents from the curing bottle to the other bottle, which will become the storing bottle. Label your

blend.

9. Your eau de perfume is now ready to wear. If you’d like to gift it, put some in a decorative bottle. Be

sure to advise the recipient, however, to keep it out of direct heat or sunlight. Ideally, though, the best

place for storing your creation is in a dark-colored bottle.

warmer. The full roundness of a pure white flower touched by the green freshness of basil, the cleanliness of a

lotus blossom mixed with a summer ozone note. Crushed lemon leaves contrast the dark green evanescent

bitterness of damp earth, rounding the composition.

Top notes feature purple basil from Northern Italy, lemon leaves from Calabria, Neroli from Grasse (distilled

orange blossom), Comore Islands nutmeg, and cypress from Italy.

Basic Perfume Recipe – Oriental

1 tablespoon Carrier oil

15 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil

5 drops Jasmine Essential Oil

4 drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

This particular fragrance is a very romantic perfume! Perfumes were commonly used as aphrodisiacs to attract a

mate. This one is no different. It has a unique scent with a pleasant base note, but again, perfume scents are

very subjective. Be sure to experiment a little before you decide to open up your own perfumery.

For this perfume, you will only want to use just a dab on your wrists and behind your ears to carry the scent

with you throughout the day. Because the essential oils are so concentrated in this blend, you do not want to

use too much.

There is an old saying that your perfume should not walk in the room before you do. You want people to

remember a pleasant scent, not be overpowered with fragrance.

In addition to being a pleasant perfume, the above aromatherapy fragrance also works to promote energy as

well as putting you aiding in creating a romantic mood. Both Jasmine and Ylang Ylang are powerful

aphrodisiacs, so only use this blend with caution.

You will find the recipe listed above is also beneficial for relaxing as well. The benefits of using aromatherapy in

your own perfumes are the following:

* Completely natural products and non-toxic

Page 11: Aromatherapy Perfume Recipes

11

* Have healing powers as well as a pleasant fragrance

*You can have a scent that no one else has (don’t underestimate this one – there are people who pay plenty to

create their own scent at perfumeries in Paris).

* Much less expensive in the long run.

The disadvantages? You have to play around with scents for a little bit before you hit on what you like. Make

sure that you write each ratio of every essential oil used in a particular scent as nothing can be more frustrating

than actually coming up with the fragrance of your dreams and then not remembering how you ended up

making it.

Keep in mind, when making your perfume, that you can mix and match different essential oils to get the scent

that you want. The purpose of using the specific notes is to ensure you have a fragrance that’s not only

appealing but one that lasts as well.
