WORKSHEET-1 (2019-20)
CLASS: V SUBJECT-ENGLISH
SECTION-A READING Q.1Read the passage about the first giant wheel and answer the questions that follow.
World’s first giant wheel was built by George W Gale Ferris. He was a mechanical engineer and giant
wheels are also known as Ferris wheels after him. The Ferris wheel was first erected in Chicago in the year
1893, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ landing in America.
It became the chief attraction of the fair from the day of its inauguration. The first giant
wheel had 36 cars and each of them could seat 60 people, so there were 2160 riders at any given time. The
wheel never gave any trouble and no one was ever hurt till the end of that fair. Moreover, the wheel brought
huge profits for all those associated with it. The invention showcased a feat of engineering and architecture.
People from all walks of life, whether young or old, rich or poor, queued up patiently for their turn to take a
ride on the giant wheel. Everyone loved the thrill and privilege of being wheeled high into the air for a
breathtaking view of the city below. Some people screamed in terror as the wheel slowly began its rotation,
but in spite of this, everyone loved the adventure of being on the giant wheel.
Today, no country’s fair is complete without a Ferris wheel or a ‘giant wheel’ as we call it in India. Because
of its wonder features we can also call it the wheel of wonder.

WORKSHEET (2019-20)
CLASS: V SUBJECT-ENGLISH
SECTION-A READING Q.1Read the following poem and answer the questions that follow:
THE DAFFODILS
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high over vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way
They stretched in a never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed- and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
