• Read the story. Answer the following questions correctly.

More than Just a Snack Food by Sandie Lee

It’s been around for over 5000 years. It was

an important staple to the Aztec Indians and

it even helped in the inventing of the first

microwave oven. Can you guess what it is?

That’s right, it’s popcorn. The oldest corn

ever discovered, was found in a New Mexico

rock formation called “the Bat Cave.” These

ears of corn ranging from smaller than a

penny to about 10cm long, are thought to

be approximately, 5600 years old. Kernels of

corn have also been found in tombs in Peru and some still pop after 1000 years. Popcorn was

known as momchitl to the 16th century Aztec Indians, and played an important role in their

lives. They used it not only as a food source, but also in their ceremonies.

Garlands and headdresses were made from thick rows of popcorn and used in traditional

dances. Popcorn was also thought to bring peace and goodwill. Perhaps that is why, statues

of one of their most important gods, Tlaloc (Tlahloc), their ancient god of rain, was also

adorned with popcorn necklaces.

Page 3: Miss Paulina 4th L4 - CAE · Miss Paulina L4 Date% Activities% Monday, March 23rd Worksheet 1 Worksheet 2 Tuesday, March 24th Worksheet 3 Worksheet 4 Wednesday, thMarch 25 Worksheet

Level 4 Miss Paulina One account tells of the Aztec people scattering momchitl before the fishermen went out to

sea. The popped corn represented hailstones and was given to the god of water, in hopes of

a safe journey for them.

Popcorn poppers have changed drastically over the years. Some ancient poppers were

made out of soapstone or clay. This covered bowl was hung from a tripod-like holder and

placed directly over the fire. Another method of popping corn is from the Winnabago

Indians. They just stabbed a pointy stick through the entire cob, then held it close to the fire.

When finished, it was eaten like corn-on-the-cob.

Today, we have microwave ovens that do all the popping for us. In fact, it was popcorn that

actually helped invent the first microwave. In 1946 an engineer by the name of Perry

Spencer was experimenting with a new vacuum tube called a magnetron. (Magnetrons are

used to produce the high energy that is used in microwaves.) When he was working with the

magnatron, he realized the candy bar in his pocket had melted. So being the electronics

whiz that he was, Percy Spencer had an idea and

immediately sent for some popcorn. This time he

placed the popcorn kernels near the tube and

soon history was made. The kernels popped and

he went on to create the first microwave oven.

Who knew popcorn had such a history? From

caves to ceremonies to microwaves, this fun food

has seen it all. Perhaps that’s why it has stood the

test of time and still remains a favorite today.

The Skeleton Key

by Kelly Hashway

Erik rang his grandparents’ doorbell and silently wished the next four hours would go by

quickly. He didn’t want to give up his entire Saturday afternoon at his grandparents’ house

where there were no kids in the neighborhood.

“You’re right on time,” Grandma Bethany said, opening the door. “There’s tea and cake in

the dining room.”

Cake? At least the first ten minutes would go by quickly.

Erik hung his coat on the rack by the door and saw a

strange looking key hanging on a hook. “Grandpa Bill,

what’s this funny key for?”

“That’s a skeleton key. It opens the best room in this

house,” Grandpa Bill whispered so no one else could

hear. “It’s the room I go to when your grandmother tries

to make me help with the dishes.”

“What’s so special about the room?” Erik asked.

“It’s a game room,” Grandpa Bill said. “Take the key and see if you can find the room by the

time I finish my tea.”

Erik grabbed the key and stared at it. “A skeleton key? It looks old.” Erik decided the oldest

things in the house were probably upstairs in the walk-up attic. He headed past the dining

room and to the stairs.

Level 4 Miss Paulina Grandpa Bill sipped his tea and shook his head. Erik knew that meant he was going the

wrong way. He headed back to the front door where’d found the key. Erik thought about

the oldest part of a house.

“The basement! It’s the first part that’s built.”

He rushed to the basement door and looked at the lock. It was different from a normal lock.

He slid the key inside and turned it. With a click, the door opened. Erik switched on the light

and walked down the stairs. The basement was one giant room with a pool table in the

middle and a dartboard on the far wall.

“Awesome!” Erik said.

“Ever learn to play pool?” Grandpa Bill asked, coming down the stairs.

“No,” Erik said. “Well then, grab a cue from the rack and I’ll teach you.” Erik smiled. The next

four hours were going to fly by.

1. Why Erick didn´t want to spend his Saturday afternoon at his grandparent´s house?

a. Because he was going to a party that day.

b. Because there were no kids in the neighborhood of his grandparents.

c. Because Erick wanted to stay at his home and play videogames.

• Read the story. Answer the following questions

Bacon and Wool: Winter is Here

Story By: Andrew Frinkle

Snow was falling on the farm. Winter was here. Bacon the pig knew

it, because his pink, fuzzy skin was turning blue! His nose was turning

into an icicle, too. Nearby, his friend was not having the trouble he

was.

Wool was a sheep, and he had a nice thick coat of wool to keep

himself warm. He was wandering around like it was no big deal. He

was having trouble finding green grass to chew on though. He normally never stopped

chewing.

Like some people constantly chewed bubblegum, Wool loved to have a mouthful of grass.

Unfortunately, the cool fall weather had yellowed the grass. The snow was covering it now,

and he had to use his nose to dig around for more. He didn’t like the hay and oats they were

offered as much as he loved grass!

Bacon murmured coldly and wiggled into a pile of hay. He

wiggled all the way in and slowly turned around. His curly tail

began to defrost, and he poked his nose out into the cold air to

watch his friend. From inside the haystack, he could see Wool,

but the sheep did not see him.

When wool crept closer to sniff the straw, Bacon jumped out at

him. Wool jumped straight up in the air and fell over.

Page 11: Miss Paulina 4th L4 - CAE · Miss Paulina L4 Date% Activities% Monday, March 23rd Worksheet 1 Worksheet 2 Tuesday, March 24th Worksheet 3 Worksheet 4 Wednesday, thMarch 25 Worksheet

Level 4 Miss Paulina Sometimes, Wool forgot that he was not a goat that would fall unconscious. Bacon sniffed in

laughter and pushed his friend. Wool got up slowly and gave Bacon a dirty look. He didn’t

like to be surprised.

Bacon snorted another laugh and went back into the haystack to take a warm nap. Only,

he woke up some time later with his tail freezing again. Wool had eaten the back of the

haystack and left his tail out in the cold air!

It was going to be a long, cold winter!

1. Which character seems to handle the winter better?

a. Bacon

b. Wool

c. Both

2. What is Wool’s biggest concern about winter?

a. Finding grass

b. Staying warm

c. Not freezing his tail

3. Where does Bacon hide to stay warm?

a. In the dog house.

b. In the haystack.

c. He doesn’t hide.

4. How does Bacon frighten Wool?

a. He pretends to be hurt.

b. He runs around screaming.

c. He jumps out of the haystack when Wool comes near.

5. How did Wool get his revenge for being scared by Bacon?

Snow Elephants

by Donna Latham

“Yay, Nick’s home from college!” Ella rapped on the window when she saw her brother. Nick

waved to her from inside his car. “My first wish came true! Nick's home! Now, if only it would

snow...” Suddenly, Ella scowled and wondered, “Who’s that guy with Nick?”

"Ella!” Nick cried as he walked through the front door. He picked her up and tossed her into

the air. “Mom, Ella, meet my friend, Narong. He’s from Thailand. He’s visiting us for the

weekend.”

“Welcome,” Mom said.

Narong asked, “Where is your snow, please? I

have never seen snow.” Mom shrugged and

smiled. “So far, we've had nothing.”

“That doesn’t stop us from wishing for snow,

right, Ella?” Nick winked.

“Blah,” Ella muttered. “Winter's not much fun without snow.”

“Would you like a snack?” Mom asked. “Ella and I baked yummy cookies this morning.” Ella

twirled her hair glumly. She thought to herself, “Narong spoiled everything. Nick was

Narong sat shyly at the kitchen table. He pointed to a plate of cookies.

“Are those elephant cookies?” Ella quietly grumbled, “Elephants are my favorite animal.”

“Miss Ella, the Thai people cherish elephants.” Narong’s eyes danced. “White elephants are

a symbol of royalty.”

Ella’s eyes widened. “Royalty? Well, I’m going to be a princess when I grow up.” Narong

nodded in agreement. For the first time, Ella smiled.

“I whipped up the snow white frosting on these cookies. See? Because I’m wishing for snow.

Like you.” “Snow elephants taste yummy,” Nick said as he crunched a cookie at the kitchen

table. Mom peeked out the window and saw

swirling snowflakes tumbling softly from the sky.

“Ella, look out the window! Your second wish

finally—“Mom looked back towards the kitchen

table.

“Where did everyone go?” Outside, Ella padded powdery snow into a ball. She placed it in

Narong’s hand. Her wishes had come true, and she realized that she had made a new

friend.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

by Cynthia Sherwood

Every January we celebrate the life of a great man.

Martin Luther King, Junior fought for civil rights. He

believed all Americans should be treated fairly, no

matter what their skin color.

Dr. King was born in 1929 in Georgia. Since he was

black, he could not go to the same schools as white

children. Black Americans also had to use separate

restrooms, restaurants, theaters, and swimming pools in

some states.

Dr. King thought this was wrong. He was a Christian

minister who worked for equal rights for black people. He helped lead peaceful protests to

change those unfair laws. It was a hard fight. Dr. King was attacked and arrested many

times. But more and more Americans grew to understand that it was wrong to treat black

people differently from white people.

In 1963, Dr. King led a quarter million people in a march to Washington, D.C. While there, Dr.

King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He spoke about his hopes for America. He

said people should be judged by their hearts, not by their skin color. His efforts helped bring

about new laws to create equal rights for all Americans.

The third Monday of January is a holiday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King. We honor

his courage in working to improve the lives of so many people.

Worksheet 13

• Read the story. Circle the correct answer. Welcome To Hawaii

Story By: Andrew Frinkle

Aloha! I live in Hawaii. It is not one of the Lower 48 states. It is a bunch of islands in the Pacific

Ocean. Hawaii is famous for hula dancing, swimming, surfing, beaches, islands, the weather,

volcanoes, and tourism! It is the 43rd largest state (or the 8th smallest) and the 40th most

populous, making it toward the bottom in both categories.

The state capital is Honolulu. Now that you

know some of the basic facts about Hawaii, let

me tell you a little more about my state.

Hawaii is interesting because it’s one of the

only two states that are not connected to the

other states, the other one being Alaska. It is

not one of the Lower 48 States at all. In fact, it’s

not even on the same land mass! Hawaii is a

chain of about 100 islands and rocks, mostly

formed by volcanoes. In many ways, it is more like a territory than a state, because of how it

is not connected to the other states. It shares much in common with Midway Island, Guam,

the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the other island territories of America. Yet, it is a state.

It is actually the 50th and most recent state.

Before Hawaii, which was up until 1959, there were only 49 states.

Page 24: Miss Paulina 4th L4 - CAE · Miss Paulina L4 Date% Activities% Monday, March 23rd Worksheet 1 Worksheet 2 Tuesday, March 24th Worksheet 3 Worksheet 4 Wednesday, thMarch 25 Worksheet

Level 4 Miss Paulina Hawaii, like Texas, actually used to be its own country. Unlike Texas, the Hawaiian people

were ruled by kings. The Hawaiian people had a difficult time after the European explorers

arrived, bringing strange new diseases and sicknesses with them. Wars among the tribes and

the diseases killed many of the natives, and eventually the foreign settlers came to

outnumber the native Hawaiian people.

Hawaii had an important location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which was one of the

reasons why America annexed Hawaii. After some political strife and some changes that

many of the natives opposed, it eventually became a state.

Today, people still love to visit Hawaii to see its sunsets, its beaches, its volcanoes, and its

tropical beauty. It is a prime spot to vacation, to surf, or to live! It has a very mixed culture,

with a strong Asian population, especially Japanese and Filipino. There are also many

European cultures present on the island, and let’s not forget the Hawaiian people

themselves! As you can imagine, this blending of peopl  es and cultures really gives Hawaii

and interesting cultural flavor, with unique foods, customs, and celebrations. Many people

have even heard a few words of the native language, like ‘Aloha,’ which means hello, or

‘Hula,’ which is a traditional dance. Come try some of the local foods and catch some

waves in The Aloha State.

Now that you know a little more about Hawaii, are

you thinking about visiting? There are some great

waves to catch and many great things to see and

do. Hope to see you soon!

Worksheet 15

• Read the story. Answer the questions.

Magician of The Sea!

by Kelly Hashway

What do three hearts, eight arms, and one

huge brain add up to? An octopus, a

creature that can do amazing things.

Octopuses are extremely intelligent. They can

learn new things just like humans. They’ve

even

learned a few tricks to get them out of sticky

situations. If an octopus is threatened by a

predator, such as a shark or bird, it can use

some pretty incredible skills to get away.

Octopuses don’t have teeth or sharp claws to

defend themselves. Instead, they use more

clever ways to fool their attackers. Octopuses like to hide themselves in the sand on the

bottom of the ocean floor. How you ask? Well, the octopus is like a chameleon because it

can change the color of its skin to match the sand. And this color change, or camouflage,

happens in less than a minute.

Some octopuses like to stay in more shallow water where there are rocks and coral. Because

octopuses are invertebrates, meaning they don’t have backbones, they can squeeze

themselves into small spaces between the rocks to get out of reach of their predators.

Another way an octopus can hide is by shooting ink. An octopus uses a part of its body

called a siphon to shoot ink into the water. The ink forms a cloud that hides the octopus. By

the time the ink clears and the predator can see again, the octopus has swum away or

hidden. It’s very much like a magician doing a vanishing act.

Level 4 Miss Paulina If you think that’s a neat trick, then you’ll love what else these creatures have up their

sleeves. If an octopus is being attacked, it can actually make itself look like a venomous sea

snake. It will bury itself in the sand, keeping two arms visible. It will change the color of those

arms to match a sea snake. But what if there’s no time to hide? If an octopus is in trouble, it

can break off one of its arms. The arm will then change colors and squirms around in the

water to distract the predator while the octopus swims away to safety. Don’t worry though.

The octopus’s arm will grow back.

There is one kind of octopus that has venom to use in defense. The

blue-ringed octopus is tiny; it could fit in the palm of your hand.

Predators might think this size makes the octopus a great snack, but

they know to stay away. The blue-ringed octopus is very poisonous

and can kill predators much larger than itself, including humans.

So the next time you see an octopus in the aquarium or while you’re

snorkeling, remember that inside that oversized head is a very large

brain, making them a clever addition to the sea.

1. Write four ways the octopus defend themselves.

2. Write two similarities between an octopus and a chameleon

Worksheet 17

• Read the story. Answer the following questions.

The Clever Owl

The brown owl sat on a branch and watched. He was very good at watching. His big eyes blinked. Down below, a white rabbit played in the grass. The rabbit was very fast. He was too fast to catch. Every time the owl tried to catch the rabbit, the rabbit ran away.

The owl was hungry, but he had to find a way to catch the rabbit. How could he catch the fast rabbit? If he flies down on top of him, the rabbit would see his shadow and run into his hole. What could he do?

Suddenly, the owl had an idea. His eyes got really big because he was excited. A moment later, he took off flying. When the owl was flying, he made sure to stay away from the rabbit. The owl didn´t want the rabbit to know he was coming. Then, when he came close to the rabbit, he stretched out his body to change the shape of his shadow!

The white rabbit stopped eating grass and looked. Suddenly, there was a black rabbit next to him. The white rabbit stared. He didn´t know there was a black rabbit near his home. It looked like he could make a new friend!

Without warning, the black rabbit disappeared, and it its place was the owl. The rabbit cried out and tried to run for his hole, but the owl was waiting for him. The rabbit ran right into the owl´s claws and became his dinner.

Sometimes, when you try something new, you can surprise yourself and others.

Welcome To Colorado

Story By: Andrew Frinkle

I live in Colorado. It is a mountain state in the west. Colorado is famous for skiing, mountains,

altitude, beer, and the Air Force! It is the 8th largest state, so one of the bigger ones, and it’s

the 22nd most populous, making it average. You might know some of the major cities, like

Denver, Colorado Springs, Aspen, Aurora, and Pueblo. The state capital is Denver. Now that

you know some of the basic facts about Colorado, let me tell you a little more about my

state.

Colorado is probably mostly known for the Rocky Mountains. It’s a very high state, giving it

one of its nicknames: The Highest State. However, it usually uses other nicknames, like The

Rocky Mountain State. Colorado isn’t just mountains though. It’s actually something of a

plateau, which is a wide, flat land. It’s just very high up compared to most states. There are

many natural beauties in Colorado, with national forests, mountains, and many great ski

slopes. Colorado is also one of the 4-corners states, meeting at a perfectly square corner

with Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

Historically, Colorado was settled by

Indian tribes like the Arapaho, the

Comanche, the Apache, and the

Cheyenne. Parts of it were in the

Louisiana Purchase, which France

sold to America. Most of it was

claimed by Spain, later becoming

part of Mexico. After the Mexican-

American War, it became American

Level 4 Miss Paulina land. It was split between the Utah Territory, the Nebraska Territory, and the Kansas Territory,

only becoming the Territory of Colorado when James Buchanan signed it into territory status

in 1861. Colorado became a state in 1876, which was 100 years after our country was

founded, so it got the nickname of The Centennial State.

Today, Colorado is home to Colorado Springs, which is the home of the Air Force Academy.

There are major brands from Colorado, like Samsonite, Russell Stover Candies, Coors Brewing,

Celestial Seasonings Teas, and other brands. Mining, oil, and coal are big business in

Colorado. Colorado has the 11th highest

average household income in

America, making the state one of the

wealthier ones. Colorado is home to major

sports teams like the Colorado Avalanche

(NHL), the Denver Nuggets (NBA), The

Colorado Rockies (MLB), and the Denver

Broncos (NFL). There really is a lot going on

in Colorado, and tourism is very big!
