Did you know...• The Wallace Rural Fire District was organized in 1950.Our population is 960 and covers 454 square miles (290,560 acres) in Lincoln and Hayes Counties. The terrain is mostly sandhills used primarily for farming and ranching.

•Self-reliance is the rule for fire safety for many people. If you live in an area where the local fire department is more than a few minutes away because of travel time or distance, or if you are outside the limits of the nearest town, be sure you know how to be self-reliant ina fire emergency.

Sutherland volunteers

a familyBy Andrew Bottrell

[email protected]

June Linstrom has been volunteering for the Sutherland FireDepartment as an EMT for 55 years.

To her, it’s about the camaraderie she has formed with the people she’sworked with, and helping out those in need. Linstrom, who because ofhealth reasons is in a wheel chair, has had to stop going on calls, butshe continues to help the department by doing bookwork and finances.

“If I need something, I just call one of them and they’re here to helpme,” Linstrom said. “They are all my family.”

Linstrom was one of the original volunteers in the 1960s when theSutherland Fire Department took over ambulance services on a vol-unteer level from Adams and Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

“We got our first ambulance from Adams and Swanson’s for $1,” shesaid. “We had to pay the title.”

Linstrom said that Jack Frieberg, a North Platte firefighter, trainedthe volunteers in Sutherland and Hershey, both in firefighter’s firstaid and later in the EMT courses in the 1970s. She said Sutherland,Hershey and North Platte continue to work closely together today. That, she said, is how the volunteer ambulance services started inSutherland, and why they continue today.

“It just went from there,” she said. “I remember the first major run Ihad was at Hershey, at Butch’s on a bar fight. Two men came in to robthe [bartender]. [The bartender] pulled out a gun and shot both of

them. I went down and got one and the other ambulance got the otherone, and we brought them back to Sutherland.”

Linstrom also remembers a fiery crash along Highway 30, where sheand her husband pulled a boy from a burning car and took him to thehospital in North Platte.

“My husband and I happened to be right behind the accident onHighway 30,” she said. “I went out into the waiting room and one ofthe [Sutherland] firemen was sitting there. I talked to him and askedhim what he was doing there. The little boy was his son. He was newand I did not know his family yet.”

A year later, while teaching a demonstration at Sutherland School,Linstrom said she encountered the boy. Though she didn’t rememberhim, he remembered her and reminded her of her actions.

“I knelt down to him and he said, ‘can I give you a hug?’” she said.“That’s all the thanks I would ever need for being on the job.”

Linstrom said she worked the Kellie murders in the 1970s, as well asgroundbreaking of the Gerald Gentleman station.

Linstrom commended everyone she’s worked with, and continues towork with today, and said that the volunteers make the Sutherland andHershey fire and ambulance departments viable. She said that makesher proud.

“All the towns have fire departments and the men are all cross-trained.We need it, because a lot of lives are saved form it,” she said. “The vol-unteers are all dedicated. They never ask why. They just go out and doit.”

Curtis ambulance

entering 40th yearBy Andrew Bottrell

[email protected]

In 2012, the Frontier CountyAmbulance Service is celebratingits 40th anniversary.

George Wetzel, who helped foundthe volunteer service and volun-teered for many years, now sits onthe ambulance board, which over-sees the outfit. He said the volun-teers come from all walks of life.

“The volunteers are very impor-tant,” he said. “They are house-wives and local business peoplethat take time off their jobs.”

Wetzel said that people in thesmall community of 800 – about2,700 in the county – help eachother out, and called the countyneighborly and friendly, which isone reason he says the ambulanceservice continues.

It’s also important for the countyto have a method of getting resi-dents to the nearest hospitals inNorth Platte and McCook. He saidif the county had to rely on ambu-lance service from North Platte orMcCook, it would add an hour ofdrive time for each call.

Before the volunteer service,Wetzel operated the ambulanceservice out of Wetzel FuneralService in Curtis, which heowned. However, impending regu-lations passed in the years prior to1972, made it harder to operatethat ambulance service, and madea volunteer service more sustain-

able for a small community.

Wetzel said he attended a fewambulance board meetings fromaround the area, before makingthe decision to form an ambulanceboard in Frontier County.

“I came back here and we put anad in the paper. We had about adozen people show up to our firstmeeting. Our first instructor camedown from North Platte. The firstpeople had 18 hours of instructionin first aid and ambulance work,”he said.

Since then, the Frontier CountyAmbulance Service has servedmost of Frontier County strictlywith volunteers.

“It just kind of grew, and now wehave 15 volunteers, and we havethree ambulances, two in Curtisand one in Maywood,” Wetzel said.“Maywood has their own squadand Curtis has their own squad.”

The service is kept alive by the vol-unteers, and maintenance andcosts are paid through a charge topeople who need ambulance serv-ice, and through donations,Wetzel said. Recently, Wetzel saidthe department received ananonymous donation of $8,000,which he said was dedicated to ayoung man who died in a car acci-dent earlier this year.
