1. Arms of the Middle Temple— The Lamb and Flag was used as the emblem of the

Inn from at least the early seventeenth century, adopted due to its association with

the Knights Templar. Despite this lengthy usage, the arms were not registered by

Garter King of Arms until 9 March 1949.

2. The Fleur-de-Lys—While the origins of the Fleur-de-Lis are unclear, the symbol

was used to represent the royalty of France and France more generally. Kings and

Queens of England laid claim to the throne of France from the reign of Edward III

until 1800, and the symbol featured on the Royal arms, as can be seen in other arms

on this window.

3. The Tudor Rose—The Tudor Rose was adopted by Henry VII following his victo-

ry at Bosworth Field and accession to the throne, to symbolise the union of the

Houses of York (symbolised by a white rose) and Lancaster (symbolised by a red

rose). It is used today as the plant badge of England.

4. The Pomegranate—The symbol of Katherine of Aragon and her daughter, Queen

Mary I. Katherine adopted the Pomegranate as her badge as a symbol of fertility as

well as a representation of her origins in Spain, and it featured in her coat of arms

as Queen of England.

5. Falcon in Fetterlock—The badge of Edward IV, used by the House of York from

the first Duke of York onwards, and showing the Plantagenet falcon surrounded

by a fetterlock. From the reign of Edward IV, the lock was always shown open.

6. As 1.

7. The Royal Arms of England, 1603-1689, 1702-1707—On his accession to the Eng-

lish and Irish thrones in 1603, James I and VI quartered the Royal Arms of England

with those of Scotland. These arms were used until the accession of William and

Mary, before their restoration by Queen Anne and used until the formation of

Great Britain.

8. The Royal Arms of England, 1198-1340, 1360-1369—First used by Richard I

(Richard the Lionheart), these arms, which represent the ruler of the Kingdom of

England, Duchy of Normandy and Duchy of Aquitaine, were used until their quar-

tering by King Edward III with the Royal Arms of France.

9. The Royal Arms of England, 1406—1422, 1461-1470, 1471—1554, 1558-1603—

Following Edward III’s quartering of the Royal Arms of England with those of

France, Henry IV reduced the fleurs-de-lis to three (following Charles VI of

France), producing this coat of arms, which was used intermittently until the acces-

sion of James I and VI.
