This week, were learning all about Jack Lee, a veritable deity of the Pride of Arizona. We all know

that he wrote our ght song, Bear Down Arizona, which Ive been told rsthand is more recognizable in Tempe

than the ASU ght song. That makes him important at the UA. But Jack Lee is just too cool to be a lo-

cal celebrity- marchers across the country should thank him because JACK LEE INVENTED THE 8 TO 5

MARCHING STEP. TRUE STORY. Before, directors would just tell their students to try their best to stay in

a straight line moving from one point to another- we can all see how that would work out.

Michigan: After his graduation from Ohio State, Jack Lee became an assistant director of bands at the Univer-

sity of Michigan in 1948. There, he introduced some innovations that will seem very familiar to those of us in

    the Pride:

    1. Instrumentation. He began strategically placing instruments on the eld, because back in the day most

drill writers just threw people all over in a haphazard manner.

    2. Bandorama was developed as a variety show put on by the schools bands to raise money for the depart

ment. (Bandorama was held at the UA for many years in the 1960s and 1970s- ask me to see

    the newspaper articles sometime!).

    3. Band Day was rst held at Michigan in 1949. (The rst band day at UA was held in 1954, two years

after Jack Lee became director at Arizona. Back then, it was not a competition- instead, they invited

local bands to perform halftime at a game. Imagine squeezing up to 1,400 high school band students

onto the eld at Arizona Stadium!)

    4. Dance steps. The rst routine to have dance steps was a Michigan marching band production of Alexanders Ragtime Band.

Arizona: Jack Lee became director of bands at Arizona in 1952. On the way home from his interview, he

penned Bear Down on a barf bag in his airplane. True story. He was director until his retirement around

1980. Mr. Lee was an imposing gure, despite the fact that he was ridiculously short. One of his favorite pas-

times was painting miniature tin soldiers. Heres some fun facts about his tenure at Arizona.

    1. The bands in the 1950-1970s were probably comparable to high school bands today. They played

simple tunes and formed shapes like hearts, shamrocks, and stick gures on the eld.

    2. The band traveled a lot more back then than they do now. They would make occasional trips to LA or

San Diego for football games and travel to El Paso, TX, and Juarez, Mexico on a sort of goodwill trip

each year.3. The UA band marched at Super Bowl I in 1967, as well as Jimmy Carters presidential inauguration in

    1977.

    4. The UA was a land grant school, which meant that male students had to be in the ROTC. Some students

skirted this duty by joining the ROTC band, which meant they got to practice playing while everyone

was running laps kind of like those of us who joined band in high school to avoid taking PE.

    5. The band marched old school. Floating the block A (something Jack Lee invented) involved high step-

ping, goose stepping, anks, and several tempo changes. Think about that next time youre asked to

simply roll step in one direction for 64 counts!

Musings (get it?!) from CambodiaA Letter from Garrett Matlick

Dear Rees and the 2010 Pride of Arizona,

Im here sitting on my bamboo bed, literally halfway across the world study-

ing the ofcial language of Cambodia, Khmer, with my headphones distracting

me from racing semis, barking dogs, chickens, and the subtle chatter of which I

only understand maybe 10%, and as the sounds of the Zeppelin show penetrate

my ears and cause my brain to explode, I still think to myself 11,000 miles away,

Gosh darn! This is still the best freaking marching band in the world! (Editors

note: Certain words have been edited so as not to upset the more sensitive Bugle

readers out there.) Its true, it really is. But, as I listen to Bryan Borg blast hissolo in Part I, you must realize, in the words of Rees himself, that you ARE the

Pride of Arizona 2010. You own the MUSE show and nobody can compare this

year to any other, because each year is so drastically different: different people,

relationships, music, its all fresh, so dont wait around for the season to make it

happen, because, well, thats your responsibility. And, every year, Ive seen them

(or us) own it. I have no doubt that this season may sit among the ranks of Leg-

end, and the only way it can get there is with persistence and determination.

I digress. This is not my marching band anymore. My time is done (and oddly

there is still a Matlick around. What is it, a decade now? You really cant get

rid of us), so now I can sit and hear how you grow through long distance phone

calls every few weeks. I am proud of you, and I probably dont know 40% of

you. This is a privilege of the heart that is earned through blood, sweat, and tears.

Even if I do not know you, I know what strains you go through and for that I am

proud. Okay, now Band Yell is on, so it must be close to the end of this let-

ter. My three words of advice: Patience, Diligence, and Persistence. Theyserve me well here in Cambodia. I love all of you and cant wait for an internet

connection that will let me download the opener at faster than 1 second of video

feed per minute so I can actually hear the show.

    Sincerely with the utmost repsect,

I think its about abortion... ovulation???...hello

Tiffs Response: Little known fact, the rst copy of the CD had ovulation in the place of the current lyr-

ics of elation, so this case of an interpretation-fail does have some basis. However, reread the lyrics with

abortion in mind. Ya, that gives the piece a whole new meaning, particularly when you get to the bury it/

smother it/murder and screaming out part of the chorus.

If you think about it, were an unusual group of people. We came to Tucson an entire week early so that

we could all run it back and do it one more time, get yelled at, and obtain a ridiculous combination of

tan lines and sunburns. Why? Without even having to say it, theres clearly something that draws us onto

McKale Field four times a week. If there wasnt, we could have always made the choice others have made

this season and quit. Whatever it is that draws us all together and makes this whole experience worth it,

its become a kind of sadistic addiction (so many of us come back for another year to do it all again, afterall). This indenable it is something we clearly hold in high regard, so much in fact, that contrary to what

others may be doing with their Saturday mornings, regardless of what others may say, and setting aside the

ridiculous assumption that music is something that can be cut from schools- we, the Pride of Arizona, keep

coming back. We wont let these outside inuences control our efforts to obtain whatever it is. However

you may look at it, time is running out for us to show these people who we are.

Iowa PreviewBy, Andre Veres and Mark Slater

Last week, Arizona routed The Citadel 52-6 in their home opener. The Wildcats were led by senior run-

ning back Nic Grigsby who rushed for three touchdowns, including a career-long 62 yard scoring run.

Nick Foles completed 17 of 22 pass for 214 yards and one touchdown before being pulled at the start

of the third quarter to rest.

Today, Arizona faces the Iowa Hawkeyes, probably the most anticipated game of the year. This game

is thought to be a determining factor of the Wildcats entire season. If Arizona wins, they would become

one of the top contenders to win the conference. If the game is close, the same could still be argued. This

is one of Mike Stoops biggest games of his tenure at Arizona. There have been questions about his abil-

ity to win on the big stage (i.e. Holiday blowouttoo soon?), and a win today would definitely put those

    skeptics to rest.

Arizona will be tested by arguably one of the best defenses in the nation. The defensive line returns all

four starters, including All-American end Adrian Clayborn, a potential top 5 pick in next years draft.

Tyler Sash is a player that Nick Foles will have to keep an eye on as well dominating last years game.

Iowa has lead quarterback Ricky Stanzi who is in his third year starting. Although Stanzi is a very expe-

rienced quarterback, he is nowhere near the talent level of Nick Foles and has tendencies to throw inter-

ceptions. A player that shredded the Wildcats defense was running back Adam Robinson. Robinson had

over 100 yards and two touchdowns in a MVP performance last year. The Wildcat defense will have its

hands full trying to contain Robinson. Another unit the defense will have trouble with is the offensive linefor the Hawkeyes. The offensive linemen are huge and very physical. Our defensive line will have a lot

of trouble trying to match up with them.

For Arizona to win, they will have to establish a running game. Arizona needs to be very physical

against an already physical Iowa team. If Arizona is able to run against the Hawkeye defense, they

should be able to control the clock and keep our young defense off the field. This game will be a mea-

suring stick to see if Stoops has indeed built a winner in Tucson.

If the offensive line can give enough time for Foles to find his weapons downfield, it should be a high

scoring game for the Cats. Iowa has been known to be a terrible road team at times. Expect the Zona-Zoo to be a huge factor in this too.

Arizona in a stunner 27-17, same score as last year. Mark Slater

I believe that the offense will have trouble against a very good Hawkeye defense. As for the defense,

they will keep the Wildcats in the game for a few quarters, but theyll eventually get tired and get

pushed around. The game will be a close one because of the Zona Zoos presence, but Iowa will kick a

late field goal to win the game. Iowa wins 23-20. Andre Veres

    Dear Iowa,Welcome to hell.

How was the Rose bowl? You remember? That game youve gone to ve times? Havent won it

since the 50s? Yeah, well its our turn. Its our time. We dont care about your feelings. We dont care

about your AP rank. You. Are. Going. Down.

Hope youre prepared, because youll be surrounded by sixty thousand avid wildcats lead by one of

the raunchiest, rabid, and most spectacularly ticked off student sections youve ever seen. Dont try to takethe crowd out of the game. You cant. The nationally ranked band will bring em right back in.

This place will be like your worst nightmare. Dont believe me? Back in 2006, The California

Golden Bears stormed into Arizona Stadium 6-0 in the Pac-10 and ranked #8 in the AP poll. They lost. Cal

Coach Jeff Tedford later said that game day in Arizona Stadium was the most hostile environment he had

    ever been in.

We dont care that youre ranked 9th in the AP poll. We eat ranked teams for breakfast. Since

Stoops arrived in 2004, weve beaten at least one ranked opponent every season. That includes crushing the

BCS hopes of #7 UCLA, #8 Cal, and #2 Oregon in 05, 06, and 07 respectively. Youre not a football team,

youre a statistic waiting to happen.

You wanna slow the game down and run? So can we, but we can also light you up in the air. You

beat us last year, but dont forget that last year, we had a different starting quarterback. What happened

when we put Foles in halfway through the 4th quarter? He immediately drove down the eld for a touch-

down. Plus youre missing your defensive coordinator due to illness. Were in top shape.

So go ahead and underestimate us. We dont care. To us, youre just another spike in our rankings

and another corpse under our feet. Well see you tonight in Arizona, and we are very, very, pissed off.

    Sincerely,

    The University of Arizona

So Im just throwing this out there, but I was totally right about last weeks game. Okay, so maybe I

wasnt exactly right. Apparently, you cant get a negative score in football. Who knew?

Iowa, on the other hand, is reportedly a good team. Some guy named AP says theyre the ninth best team

in the country. Now, this same dude thinks that were the 24th best team in the US.

Clearly, hes delusional. But experts, otherwise known as people who actually watch football, seem to

believe there may be some validity to Seor APs claim.

Let me tell you why theyre all wrong: I was born on the 24th, which is my lucky number, and Ill be at the

game, so the Wildcats are going to win.

I know you need no further convincing (my argument is ironclad), but I can give a few more reasons why

the Wildcats are going to win.

The Iowa Hawkeyes which Im like 90 percent sure is an STD also have extremely tacky colors. I

know this was one of my arguments against The Citadel, but black and gold, really Iowa? Retire those

tired and clich colors for something a little more vibrant, something with pizzazz

I see red shoes, with orange socks, they can keep their yellow pants, a green jersey with blue lettering and

an indigo/purple helmet. I dont know why Im so drawn to these colors, but if Iowa wants to be champi-

ons, they would adopt my much more fabulous design.

Our only cause for worry is that there is a city in Iowa called Waterloo. Thats one of my favorite songs by

ABBA! We might be in trouble. But we do have a secret weapon, Surprise! Its just outside Phoenix.

And people say I dont know anything about football. Psh. All I know is that I will be the one with the

last laugh after the Wildcats rush onto the eld and score lots of baskets.
