    Should Music Classes BeRequired

    by: Evan R.

I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but mostimportantly music, for the patterns in musicand all arts are the key to learning. Theancient Greek philosopher Plato said thisover two thousand five hundred years ago.but it is still valid today. Music is helpingchildren to be more engaged in school.

Also, studies show that music classes helpdevelop childrens brains and improve their

scores on tests like the SAT that help themto get better scholarships. All thesebenefits make it easy to agree with Platosstatement that music is the most importantthing to teach children. Children should berequired to take music classes in schoolbecause it offers many benefits inimportant areas.

a graph of sat scores for students that did and didnt takemusic classes

One of the most important things forhelping children do well in school is to keep

them engaged, and music can help withthat. Enjoyable classes, like music classes, keep students interested and excited aboutschool. A small survey of students in sixththrough ninth grades in Loveland CitySchools found that nearly 90 percent of thestudents surveyed enjoyed music classes, and larger studies in the United Stateshave found the same thing. According tothe National Education of Music MerchantsKeeping Music Education Strong brochure,a 2006 Harris poll found that, The vast

majority96 percentof the schoolprincipals interviewed in a recent studyagree that participation in music educationencourages and motivates students to stayin school. Further, 89 percent of principalsfeel that a high-quality music-educationprogram contributes to their schoolachieving higher graduation rates. Musicprograms have also been shown to teachstudents better discipline, help them bemore self confident, and learn to worktogether and form friendships with other

    students.

higher on math than students not in thoseclasses.

Results of a survey given to some Loveland students

Finally, music helps kids achieve better

test scores on tests like the SAT and onstandardized testing. In 2001, the CollegeEntrance Examination Board, who givesthe SAT test, found that students in musicappreciation classes scored 63 pointshigher on verbal and 44 points.

Another study in 2 007 by ChristopherJohnson, a professor at the University ofKansas who teaches music education, showed that student s in elementaryschools with superior music educationprograms scored aro und 22 percen t higher

in English and 20 pe rcent higher in mathscores on standardized tests, compared toschools with low-quality music programs.Johnson compares t he concentration thatmusic training requires to the focusneeded to perform well on a standardizedtest. The study results were published inThe Benefits of Music Education by LauraLewis Brown on pbs.org. Some peoplemight argue that schools cant afford tohave music programs, but a study by theNational Association of Music Merchants

showed the average cost of musiceducation per student for a year is only$187, which is often less than math andscience classes as well as foreignlanguage classes. Even though music isntseen as being as important as math andscience, the benefits it has in many areasmake it an important subject to keep inschool.

The Greek philosopher Plato believedthat music was the most important subjectto teach children, and modern research

supports his belief. Music should be arequired subject for all students. Beinginvolved in music programs keeps childreninterested in school and helps them bemore confident. as well as keeping kidsinterested in school music developschildrens brains so they actually use moreof their brain, and it helps kids scorehigher on important tests. As Plato oncesaid, Music is a more potent instrumentthan any for education.

    Books for KidsBy: Nicole Pedicini

Imagine that you are taking care oftwo plants. You give one plant the regularsoil. You give the other plant much better, more nourishing soil. The first plant willgrow to the average height. The second

plant, however, will extend and growfarther than the average plant. This is thesame for children. The average soil is T.V.and other electronics. The nourishing soil is

books. Reading helps children with socialinteractions. Books extend developmentand thinking. Reading will also help leadchildren to academic success in the future.Reading helps kids develop skills essentialfor life early on.

You can view plants as a metaphor for thegrowth and development of children.

Many people wouldnt assume so, but reading actually helps children withtheir social skills. Reading improvescommunication skills. By witnessing theinteractions between characters in a book, kids learn how to interact with actual

people. Its also shown that readingdevelops empathy. In the article Benefits ofReading, the author states that, Of course itdoes because youre identifying with thecharacter in the story so youre feeling whathes feeling. Finally, reading helpschildren master language. Early readingtoddlers have been linked to a better graspof language. By reading, children are betterat interacting with people and being good inthe social setting.

Reading can help kids make friends and be morecomfortable in the social setting.

Also, reading helps speed up areasof development in children. Scenarios in

books can help impro ve logical thinking. In the article 10 Reasons Why You ShouldRead to Your Kids, the author states that,Another illustration of the importance ofreading to children is their ability to graspabstract concepts, apply logic in variousscenarios, recognize cause and effect, andutilize good judgment. Reading also helpskids become much better at comprehendingwhat they read. Comprehension is animportant part of understanding, and

understanding is in turn an important partof development. Also, reading relaxesyour body and calms your mind, whilewatching T.V. is much more stressful. Theconstant light and motion of a T.V.

bombard your senses, while the simple black and white of a book help you berelaxed and silent. Being calm will helpchildren develop faster and into a moremature person. Reading helps childrendevelop faster.

Development is like a puzzle; everything comestogether one piece at a time.

Not only will reading help a childgrow socially and in life skills, reading

helps children become more successfulacademically. Some people might arguethat watching T.V is more fun for a child,or that games on electronics areeducational, but reading will help a child

become smarter, more mature, better insocial situations, and better developed thanone who spent their childhood with astressful game or a T.V. show. Writing isan important part of education, and reading

books will help a child become a better

writer. In the article Why Should ChildrenRead, the author states, It teaches youabout grammar, sentence structures, andenhances your communication skills. This shows that by reading, children can

pick up concepts that will make them a better writer. Reading is also a complextask and exercises your brain. By reading, children strengthen existing connections intheir brain, and even form new connectionsto be faster and better. Finally, reading

leads to a higher aptitude for learning.

Early reading skills directly relate toacademic success. A child who can read

will be able to grasp all aspects of learningmuch more easily. Besides, if a child cant

put together words and phrases, how doyou expect them to grasp other subjects aswell as a child who is fluent in reading? So, overall, reading will sharpen a childs

brain and help them become moresuccessful in learning.

Early reading is a big boost in academics andschool.

Reading will push a child beyondlimits and give them a boost to help themreach the stars. It will help them acquiretraits that are greatly needed in life. Bygiving children social knowledge, they

have an advantage. Reading will speed upan increase development. And finally, reading leads to knowledge, which leads togreater achievements in academics.Reading is immensely beneficial forchildren.

Reading books is key to development.

    Zach M Day Month Year

    School Lunchesby: Zach M

This is some of the gross food that schools feed to kids.

Have you ever had a bad school lunchbefore? A lot of kids eat unhealthy, packedlunches because the school lunches tastegross. However, a lot of foods that aregood for you, taste good as well. Havingbetter food in lunch rooms would makestudents buy more and bring more moneyinto schools. The schools would be able toafford the better meals because theywouldnt be throwing away as manyuneaten lunches and wasting money. Theywould sell most of it and get more money. Ithink that school lunches need to taste goodand be good for you.

Dont you think that schools can makelunches appealing and good for you at thesame time? A lot of foods good for youtaste good as well, salad is one example. It makes me sad when they dont havesalad, said Stephanie Maduku, 9. Herfriends agreed, The more salad thebetter, they said. If you frequently eatgreen salads, youll likely have higher bloodlevels of a host of antioxidants. If schoolsput in more foods like salads it would be forthe better.

Schools could bring in a lot more money with betterlunches.

Have you thought about how schoolscould bring in more money if the lunchestasted better and more people would buy?One school district lost $30,000. Schoolworkers watched the students throw theirlunches away on a daily basis. JacksonLux a L.I.S. 6th grade student said Iwould definitely buy more if the foodtasted good. Schools are really losingmoney because they refuse to spend timefixing their lunches.

Have you noticed that a lot of kids eatvery unhealthy packed lunches? Somepeople may say that many kids buy thesehealthy lunches, but if only 50 percent ofkids on earth buy healthy lunches, thenwe will still have serious problems. Whyrisk it when schools can just make theirlunches better tasting and better for you?

A lot of kids eat unhealthy packed lunchesbecause they taste better than schoollunches. Youll find that 99/100 kidshave either chocolate or crisp foods.Only one in 10 children had a portion ofany vegetable. Since parents and kidswont pack healthier lunches, why dontthe schools help out and make betterlunches?

What schools feed kids vs. what schools should feed kids

Schools are having big impacts on theworld with their lunches in many bad ways.

Schools need to make their lunches tastebetter and healthier. A lot of good tastingfoods are good for you, schools can bringin more money if they made betterlunches, and most kids eat unhealthypacked lunches everyday because theytaste better than school lunches.Schools are contributing to the unhealthypeople that we have in our society today.

Dont eat this for lunch let's fix this.

    McDonald Mayhemby: Adeline M.

Is McDonalds negatively contributing to ourenvironment?

McDonalds serves about nine million pounds of

fries globally per day. Do you know what this

means for our society? Obesity is a widespread

issue, not only for the United States, but for the

world. We need to stop eating McDonalds food.

McDonalds advised their own employees to not

consume their own food, saying that it is an

unhealthy choice. Also, over two thirds of the

adult population in the United States are

overweight, and McDonalds is a factor to that. It is

also being fed to many children, and is derailing the

childrens growing process. Its obvious: the fast

food restaurant McDonalds is putting their

    customers health at risk.

If you were going to a restaurant, would

you want to know that they told their employees

that one of meals was an unhealthy choice? If the

restaurant doesnt suggest it to their staff, why

would they recommend it to you, the customer?

According to an article from Independent News,

McDonalds, a fast food restaurant, has advised its

own staff that a burger, fries, and a soft drink is an

unhealthy choice. It also quotes, It featured a

picture of a cheeseburger with fries and a cola

drink, which was captioned unhealthy choice, and

children eating McDonalds once a week. This is

McDonalds is certainly affecting our life

today, if you are a customer of theirs or not. The

another of a glass of water, salad and a ham and

salad sandwich, which it described as a healthier

choice. This shows that McDonalds is being

very deceitful in telling its staff, and not its

customers, that its selection includes unhealthy

meals. Many customers may not be aware of just

    how unhealthy their choice is.

McDonalds healthy choice and theirunhealthy choice

The current health care system is neither

healthy, caring, nor a system. Walter Cronkite

said this, and he is right. You need to eat good food

for a good body, and McDonalds is the wrong path

for that. The majority of McDonalds customers are

overweight. According to Beth B.s article on

    Care2.com, The average McDonalds meal

contains so much sodium, unhealthy fat, sugar and

empty carbs, its staggering. It is the exact opposite

of what any doctor or nutritionist (even the good

ol USDA MyPlate) would consider a healthy

diet. If a doctor doesnt suggest it, then you

shouldnt eat it. Its as simple as that. Yes, they do

provide salads, but from Harry Bradfords article in

the Huffington Post, Chief Executive Officer Don

Thompson admitted that salads make up just 2-3

percent of the fast food chains U.S. restaurant

sales, Bloomberg News reports. That shows that

over ninety percent of McDonalds customers do

not order the salads. Like Cronkite said, our health

care system is anything but a good one.

McDonalds is known for feeding many children,

especially with their Happy Meal, but what if I

told you that they are derailing their growth process

and their learning process of those kids? Its true.

Although many adults go there often because of its

low price and easiness, the children are suffering,

even though they dont know it. According to a

Quartz article, In science, for example, those kids

that never ate fast food scored 83 points, compared

to an average of 79 points for those who ate it

every day. According to the Telegraph, theories as

to why this is so are based on brain

chemistrysuch as a lack of iron, which leads to

slower development, the effects of sugars in the

diet, and so on. This means that the childrens

learning process is decreased by four points. This

article also showed that in the US, 52% of the

children in the past week have eaten fast food up to

three times this passed week, 10% have eaten it

four to six times this past week, and 10% have

eaten it everyday. This is not what we want our

children to be consuming. I have recently

performed a survey of three parents and asked them

questions, and all three of them stated that they

would not want their children eating McDonalds

once a week. This is giving us the information for

why McDonalds is a bad choice for children.

restaurant has told their own staff their food is

unhealthy, the majority of their customers are

unhealthy, and they are stinting the growth of

children. Lets face it, McDonalds needs to make

    some major changes.

Choose a better path Eat Fresh!

    Invasive urmese Pythons in Florida

    Name: Casey Graff

Invasive Burmese Pythonsin Floridaby: Casey Graff

Pythons can camouflage in The Evergladesextremely well.

Have you ever wondered whyBurmese Pythons have beeninvading The Everglades in Florida? These are the reasons why: Pythonsare escaping their cages and arenearly impossible to find in the wild, they are at the top of the food chain, and pythons are eating kids and petsin communities. Floridians shouldntkeep pythons as pets because if theydo escape into the wild, they becomevery dangerous.

Once pythons escape into thewild, they are nearly impossible tofind. Did you know that a pythonsnake hunt was formed in Florida,

and out of the 1,500 people acrossthe country, they only found 68 out ofthe estimated 100,000 in the wild. When snake experts go out to try tofind Pythons , they rarely find one. This shows that pythons areincredibly camouflaged and areextremely hard to find in the wild.

Pythons moved their way up in the foodchain now eating alligators.

Pythons are at the top of the foodchain in The Everglades. "Thesehigh-use areas may be optimallocations for control efforts and furtherstudies on the snakes' potentialimpacts on native wildlife," KristenHart, a USGS research ecologistsaid. They have been eating nativespecies, threatening their existence. For example, pythons have beeneating native foxes. All of us were shocked by theresults. Rabbit populations aresupposed to be regulated by factorsother than predation, like drought, disease, said a co-author BobReed, of the U.S. GeologicalSociety. Female Burmese pythonscan lay up to 100 eggs a year. Thisis what makes pythons such a bigthreat in Florida.

Pythons are a local threat to communities.

Pythons are eating other livingthings like pets and children in localareas. They slither intoneighborhoods undetected andattack. For example, on 9/11/2013a python attacked and killed a 60pound husky in a backyard. In 2009,a python swallowed a 2 year oldchild. This is why pythons shouldntbe roaming wherever they want.

This is why this invasive specieshave been affecting life for thosewho live in southern Florida. Theyare nearly impossible to find, theyare eating native species, and areeating kids and pets in communities.

Although some may argue that this wouldshorten the school day and that the kids wouldnot learn as much as they would with anormally long day, it is proven that if they letthe kids sleep in, then they will actually take inwhat they learned from their morning classes. This would lead to better grades on homeworkassignments and tests.

In the mornings are you ever rushed toget to school or to work? Early morning startsdo not allow time to prepare. In the morningskids are dazed and sleepy and have less timeto get ready. When their parent or guardiantells them to get on the bus or in the car theyare rushed and in that rush/panic they mayforget things such as homework or books. Ifthey forget their homework, their grades willdescend. 63% of kids will sometimes forgetthings in the mornings.

Have you ever been sleepy in themornings? Well most kids are dazed early inthe mornings and so do not understand whatthe teacher says and therefore do not performwell in class in the mornings. Studies havefound that kids are nearly two time zonesbehind adults. This means that they arepractically asleep in the mornings, while theirteachers are wide awake. In the mornings inthis daze they are rushed and they mayforget things in the rush. Therefore, I think thatschools should allow kids to sleep in.

    Image Subtitle and further description

Ever heard of time zones? Well, kids are twotimezones behind adults. This means thatwhile the teachers are awake, the studentsarent. Many adults are up and ready to go at 6while kids are up and ready to go at 10 orlater. This causes the effect that kids are tiredand dont process any of the information givenso that later they dont understand the thingson tests and homework. In the mornings 78%of kids are sleepy and this could mean that

they just wander through their morningclasses. Also 56% of kids are a little groggy inthe mornings while 31% are completely groggyin the mornings. This leads to them gettingbad grades.

In the mornings most kids are tired, rushed, and dazed as they start school. Theyare nearly two entire time zones behind adultsthis means that while many adults are awakein the mornings many kids are still practicallyasleep. They are rushing to prepare for schoolwhile dazed and so forget important items. This is why schools should let kids sleep in inthe mornings.

    Saving the Elephantsby: Mikayla Loomis

I magine looking out on the africansavannah in your tour truck on a safari. As

you gaze out the window, you see a grayafrican elephant caring for her calf. It ishard imagining these creatures gone forgood, but that might just be the case.Elephants are dying at an increasing rate.Poachers kill elephants in horrid ways andthen sell their precious ivory. People are

just starting to become aware of thisproblem. Elephants are becoming extinctdue to careless poachers.

An African elephant caring for hercalf

Were you aware of this problem withthe elephants? Lieberman, currently the

Vice President for International Policy atthe Wildlife Conservation Society wrote,What is most significant is that for thefirst time, the global community at thehighest level is standing up and recognizing

wildlife traffickingIn a survey taken in Ohio, Loomisdiscovered when people were asked howmany elephants were roaming about today,67% of them guessed it incorrectly. Onlyapproximately 470,000 elephants arealive; It doesnt seem like a small number,

but when it is compared to the 3-5 millionthat used to walk on this earth, this number

becomes tiny. This proves that people arenot really aware of this problem.

So how fast are these creatures becoming extinct? An article from the African Wildlife Foundation stated,Yearly, 8% of the elephant population ispoached. Also, Mosbergen, a Senior

Writer at The Huffington Post wrote, In2008, conservationists warned that Africanelephants would become extinct by 2020 if

    widespread poaching continued.Elephants are dying...fast.

Not only are elephants being killed, they are being killed in horrid ways andthen sold for their precious ivory tusks.Once elephants are killed, the ivory ismade into anything from jewelry toreligious objects. Some people say that itis good to poach elephants because it can

be made into beautiful objects that makethem rich, but most countries like the U.S.have banned ivory trade. An article

written from the Animal Rights action wrote, Poachers kill elephants usingmethods such as stoning them to death, using a poisoned dart which results in aslow and excruciatingly painful death forthe animal, and by shooting them withmachine guns. Poachers slaughter entireherds of elephants when they gather todrink at waterholes. Poachers killelephants in horrifying ways and then selltheir ivory.

So why are poachers bad?Elephants are becoming extinct due tocareless poachers. People are just startingto find out about this proble m. Elephantsare dying at a rate that is increasing.Poachers are killing elephants inmiserable ways and then sell their preciousivory. Elephants roa m the earth- lets keepit that way.

Should People Save Bees?by: Nicole Dierling

Killing off bees would be crucial to the environment.

Studies have shown thatbee stings can ease pain, and also have a toxin calledmelittin that can help preventHIV. Bees pollinate cropsand many create honey. They also save the world alot of time and money.Honey bees andbumblebees are in danger ifwe dont help them. Peopleshould help save honeybees and bumblebees.

Whats more important, honey or pollination? Well,

both are important, butpollination is done by allbees and helps more lifegrow and live. Honey beesand bumblebees areimportant native pollinators.Studies have shown thatbees pollinate 90% ofhumans wild flowers. 70 of

the top 100 human crops arepollinated by bees. Honeybees and bumblebeespollinate many native cropsand flowers.

There once was a littlebee. Although he was smalland considered by many to

be a pest, he was a big partof agriculture. One day, the

last thought was of howmuch he had done for theworld. Honey bees andbumblebees are a huge partof agriculture. Honey beesare currently responsible for$30 billion of the worldscrops. Many people believethat in a world without bees,it would be difficult to feedthe 7 billion people in theworld. Honey bees andbumblebees play a hugerole in agriculture.

What would the world be like without bees?

If the bee disappearsfrom the surface of theearth, man would have nomore than four years tolive. -Albert Einstein. Manypeople believe that bees arepests and people shouldnthelp them. Although manybelieve this, they are veryimportant and withoutpeoples help they will dieoff. Honey bees andbumblebees will go extinct ifwe dont help them. Fourmajor bumblebees speciespopulations have decreasedby ninety-six percent in thepast few years. Theresbeen an overalleighty-seven percentdecrease in bumblebeesgeographic coverage.Honey bees andbumblebees are likely to die

    if we dont help them.

Albert Einstein once said, If the bee disappears from thesurface of the earth, man would have no more than four

years to live. Is this true, no one really knows, and they dontwant to find out.

Americans eat about 285million pounds of honeyeach year. Where do theythink that honey comesfrom? People should helpsave honey bees andbumblebees from goingextinct. Honey bees andbumblebees are importantnative pollinators. They arealso a huge part ofagriculture. Bumblebeesand honey bees will die ifwe dont help them. If

people slowly kill off bees, they are slowly killing offthemselves.

Why PC Gaming is Betterby: Jackson A.

42% of Americans play threehours of video games a day, according to the EntertainmentSoftware Association. Thats 155million Americans. Because of thevideo game popularity, many gamerswant to know where to spend their

money. The personal computer (PC)has cheaper games, better graphics, and is more powerful than theconsole. For these reasons, the PCis a better gaming platform thanXbox, Playstation, Wii, and anymobile platform.

Everybody likes more money.PCs are better than consolesbecause they usually offer freemodifications. Modifications aredownloadable content that is mostlyuser made. PC gaming platformslike Steam & Origin are quicker tooffer sales & discounts than theirconsole counterparts saysTechInsider.org. Modifications areused on many high-quality videogames. Minecraft is one of the mostfamous games that has mods. MostMinecrafters have downloaded amod, or have seen a Youtuber playone. There are mods on consolestoo, but they are expensive.Computers mostly have completelyfree mods.

Most gamers know that a goodgame is always about graphics.Graphics in another important reasonwhy PC gaming is superior.Components can only be so goodbecause of low initial cost of gamingconsoles. says TechInsider.org.

This means that technology in the

console is older technology, andtherefore you need to wait for the

next generation of consoles for anupgrade. Lower technology equalslower quality graphics, leading toworse gameplay.

Scotty, we need more power!Whether you are flying the starshipEnterprise or playing a video game, more power is a good thing. PCscan provide this power, using tons ofhandy hard drives, flash drives, andcloud storage, giving you practically

unlimited data. According toLifehack.org, More power meanshigher resolution, smoother framerates, and faster load times.

The console fans often argue that they dont require more power because they have better controls. Thats true, but you have many more keyboard options than the amount of options you get on a six-button controller.

PC is clearly the superior choicefor gamers. PC gaming is muchbetter than console gaming becauseof the value, graphics, and power. So, all those Xbox, Playstation, andWii users out there should consolethemselves, and realize that PC isthe preferred choice.

    Name Day Month Year

Rock and Roll Can't Stand Still?by:Sean Chef Cirry K.

    Led Zeppelin IV Album Cover

Lately, I have noticed that rock has been criticized for having bad songs or intentionally sad songs, but theres much more to it but they have no reason to say that with no proof. Usually theyll just say its old junk but I will prove its more than junk. Rock songs may seem bad but do have a positive meaning in the end and also there are multitudes of genres of rock, and lastly, rock songs are notably uplifting. This will change your opinion on one of the greatest sensations of all time for sure.

So first off, rock songs may seem badbut actually have an allegory that mayhelp someone in life. In the song DreamOn By Aerosmith there are Lyrics thatgo a bit like this,Sing a with me, Sing for the year, Singfor my laughter, Sing for the tears,Sing a with me if its just for today, Cusmaybe tomorrow the Good Lord will

take you Away. According to StevenTyler, Frontman and Vocalist forAerosmith, Says, ...these lyrics meanthat singing is the best way to live lifebecause you never know when or howyour gonna die In the song it alsoexplicitly says, You gotta lose to knowhow to win, which is a life lesson to liveby. In the song it also says, I know, nobody knows. Where it comes andwhere it goes, this refers to the factthat nobody has the intelligence tounderstand life completely which comesback to the point of doing what you canbecause you never know when you aregoing to die.

    Thomson, D Song Meanings: DreamOnBy Aerosmith(source) http://explorerockmusic.blogspot.com

This is a Yes album cover which is aProgressive rock band and the album cover

    is that of Fragile.

Another fact is that there are amultitude of different types of Rock. Some of the many different types ofrock are, psychedelic, blues, glam, heavy metal, progressive metal, texmex, classic, philharmonic, hardrock, and plain progressive rockwhich isnt even a taste sample ofwhat Rock N Roll has to offer.Rock also has some very talentedvocalists like Steven Tyler, who Imentioned earlier, who can screamlike a demon and still dream on, andFreddie Mercury, who has (had D:)an ASTOUNDING 4 OCTAVERANGE! Also, Iron maiden vocalist,Paul Day, has an operatic singing

    level which is amazing for a metalband(sources) http://musicgenrelist.com http://watchmojo.com

This is a picture of Freddie Mercury, front

man of Queen, singing in his concert atWembly Stadium in London, England. It isknown to be the best live performance ever.

Lastly, you may say, Yeah, theressome good stories and a lot ofdifferent kinds of rock n roll, but rockdoesnt have any literal upliftingsongs, well thats where wrong mista. In the last 50 years, rock has the titleof the most uplifting song. Any Guess? Its Dont Stop Me Now By Queenand Mr. Mercury, from before, wrote

this song and it has remained a stapleof rock radio since its release in 1978.Other songs on this list are GoodVibrations By The Beach Boys, Eye ofThe Tiger By Survivor, and Livin On aPrayer By Bon Jovi.

    (source) http://dailymail.co.uk

I hope you came away with a new

point of view on Rock N Roll. Maybeyoull start listening to the pop culture

icon Beatles, or the hard rock stapleRolling Stones, or hop around band to

band listening to some Eric Clapton! Allin all, I hope you enjoyed my point of

view on this subject of greatimportance to human history as I didmaking it. So party on, Wayne, and

    party on, Garth!

    Problems With Gluten FreeMislabeling

    BY ETH N STIF N

Gluten is found in many everyday foods like the ones picturedabove.

Imagine that you were told by your doctor that you couldn't eat most of your favorite foods. No pizza. No Oreos. No pasta. Pretty much nothing that had bread, pasta or cookies. Pretty tough, huh? People have to live like that when they eat Gluten Free. People might eat gluten free because they have Celiac disease 1

or they have a gluten intolerance and were 2

told by their doctor to try a gluten free diet. Gluten free isn't easy as it is, but some companies will fail to make products genuinely

gluten free. Companies labeling incorrectly gluten free can cause symptoms in those with Celiac disease who eat the product. To other people who may think it is healthy or they have their other reasons to not eat gluten will buy the product with false advertisement, giving the company funds for what they don't deserve. There is a rule against it, but it hasn't been enforced very well. Companies need to follow more specific, better enforced rules set by the FDA so those allergic to gluten can eat safely.

Some products are mislabeled for many reasons. It can be pretty bad when it is the term gluten free is what's being mislabeled on a product because of the health threat it poses to Celiacs. A great example of this is Cheerios. They labeled their boxes wrong because of an isolated incident. They promised to be Gluten free and nearly succeeded only they encountered a problem when wheat got in their flour supply during flour transfer and many people got sick on the falsely advertised

cheerios. Dominos pizza is another example but for another reason. [Dominos] even points out that their pizza gets crosscontaminated 3

and is not suited for anyone with a gluten intolerance, but they still have a gluten free crust for those into the fad or have a very weak intolerance to gluten. False advertisements can be accidental, however. Crosscontamination can happen and the business doesn't know it's

happening and decide to keep it that way, claiming it is safe. That's why you might stillhave to read labels to make sure things areactually gluten free.Celiac disease was disc overed in the early1900s and the fad has been around for around5 years. The FDA has s pent a lot of timemaking a rule that was released in 2014. Butthey finally did in 2014 stating what g lutenfree meant on the labe l (it doesn't apply torestaurants) and that they would educatepeople incorrectly using it. Part of thedefinition of gluten free according to the ruleis any food that doesn't contain any glutencontaining grain (unless processed to take thegluten out) and all products must have lessthan 20 ppm gluten and no gluten ingredientsto earn the label. The desire to put GlutenFree on products comes mostly from 2 things:a want for Celiacs to have safe food, andmoney. Gluten free products made 2.6 billiondollars in sales in 2014. According to a TodaysDietitian article, their estimates put sales at 5billion by the end of 2015. That's great, butthe labeling should be getting better with timeand the education from the FDA as theyagreed to in a summary about the gluten freerule.

How many people actually have thisautoimmune disease? The FDA estimates that

about 3 million Americans have Celiac disease, and some know it but most others don't. Only1 in 133 people have Celiac, for those who arepart of the millions and one in 133 people, itcan be challenging finding and trusting glutenfree foods. Even though they aren't everyonethey still need to be respected, so for theirsafety and comfort, they need to be sure thatwhat they eat is not going to give themdreadful symptoms. In an article forHealth.com and CNN, Carina Storrs talks aboutsymptoms:Celiac patients can also develop

headaches, tingling, fatigue, muscle pain, skinrashes, joint pain, and other symptoms, because the autoimmune attack at the root ofthe disease gradually erodes the wall of theintestine, leading to poor absorption of iron, folate, and other nutrients that affecteverything from energy to brain function. Weas a country don't want our own peopleunsure about their own diet.

1 An autoimmune disease that is only transferable by genes. Peoples intestines get destroyed by gluten when eaten. Some symptoms are lacking growth, fatigue, pain, or rashes.

Some people don't have Celiac but still get sick when they eat gluten. 2 A gluten intolerance is inability to eat a food without bad symptoms because of difficulty digesting foods with gluten in them. It ranges from Celiac disease to just an allergy. 3 Cross contamination is when something gluten touches or gets into something gluten free. The gluten free substance is no longer gluten free. 4 PPM stands for parts per million, a way of showing how much gluten or other substance is in a product.

    How social medias is affectingteens

    by:Paige Tissot

Did you know social media isaffecting teens negatively. One reason socialmedia is affecting teens negatively is, with allthese new social medias opening up, there aremore chances of peoples self esteem beinglower by cyber bullying. Another reason is,social medias can be good but most of thetime they are distractions from being withyour family, doing your homework, or doingsomething active. Finally, I know this is

because, when kids use social media theythink they get more friends but they are really

just becoming more alone. Thats why social

media is affecting teens negatively today.Cyber bullying is something that has been going on since technology was invented, but social medias, as they may seemharmless, are really just more chances tolower someone's self esteem. About sevenout of ten people I surveyed said they have orsomeone they know has been bullied onsocial media. Also, Degreed (Acommunity of college students andprofessors) says, Cyberbullying is anenormous concern, especially foradolescents. An organization that aimsfor internet safety, called Enough isEnough, conducted a survey that found95% of teenagers who use social mediahave witnessed cyberbullying, and 33%have been victims themselves. Newsocial medias are new opportunities tobully someone. As you can see cyberbullying is a big problem today on socialmedia.

Another problem is, what couldteens be doing instead of being on socialmedia? They could be being with their

family, doing homework, studying for atest, or even just being active outside.Child Mind Institute says, Teens aremasters at keeping themselves occupiedin the hours after school until way pastbedtime. When they're not doing theirhomework (and when they are) they're onlineand on their phones, texting, sharing, trolling, scrolling, you name it. People are too busydoing things on social media and not doingwhat they should like homework or otherthings. You can probably relate to someone

being on their device too much andnot doing what they are suppose to. Doingwhat they should be doing should be moreimportant to them. But sadly it isn't, thatswhy this is another problem social mediahas made.

The final problem I discoveredwith social media is teens really thinkthey are getting more friends but theyare really just getting lonelier.Iunderstand that som e people dontagree, Im not sayin g you should nevergo social media ever, I lo ve to go onsocial media to stay in-touch withfaraway friends but its not somethingwe should do as much as some peopledo. When you occasionally check your

feed thats fine. Its just when you getto the point that you check it everysecond of every day. I know thisbecause when I was doing research Istumbled upon an article by ScholasticNews, this piece caught my eye.It said,Back when smartphones were justprops in science fiction moviesconnecting with with friends usuallymeant spending time with them in theflesh not Dming them on Instagram orsnapping them on snapchat. Everyonethinks this makes you have morefriends but really its making you morelonely. You could be going to theirhouse to play but instead, we sit homeon our phones...alone. Once peoplestart realizing that you are just morealone, our world will be changed for thebetter.

As you can see with the threereasons I stated, social media (whenon too much) can be bad for teens.Cyberbullying, doing what theyshouldnt

be doing, and becoming more aloneare just some of the negative affectssocial media has on teens. By cutting

back the time we spend on our deviceswe could change the economy.

One wayplaying an instrument can improve your coordination is that when your brain reads musical notes on a page, your brain subconsciously mustconvert that note into specific motorpatterns. Which in turn enhances

your coordination. Also playing aninstrument requires a lot ofhand-eye coordination which makes you practice and improve in thatarea. Another way playing aninstrument can help you is thatovercoming musical challenges youthought would be almost impossiblecan give you a sense of pride. Apossible counterclaim of this section

might be, Why do you need to playan instrument to create a sense ofachievement? Other things can dothat just as well. If someone would bring up where to bring up thatcounterclaim they would be right, but only partially. Yes other thingscan create a sense of achievement but what if you arent as good atother things? Also there are so manyother benefits to playing aninstrument outside of just a sense ofachievement.

College Athletes: Paid or Not?by: Caden S.

Education is the key to t he future:You've heard it a million times, a nd it's not

    wrong. -Alex Tabarrok

Education is the key to the future. Itswhat gets us going, gets us into jobs, and givesus opportunities in the real world. Collegeathletes get their pay from their scholarshipand education. The cost of giving them paywould also be too expensive for universities. How about this thought; what types of sportswould the NCAA pay? What divisions? It wouldbe very unfair. College athletes should not bepaid.

On New Years Eve, 2015, The Oklahoma Sooners faced theClemson Tigers in the Orange Bowl; the playoff semifinal.

Division I college athletics programslose a median of $11 million a year on anoperating basis. Thats a large number, so howwould Universities pay for this? The truth isthat only a fraction of the programs areprofitable while most operate at a cost to theinstitution, according to Mitchell. Also, withcapital and indirect costs, it can be even more than $11 million lost each year in division 1college sports. That humongous loss is why thecost would be way too high.

According to Institute For College Access & Success, in the state ofPennsylvania, 71 percent of students leave apublic four-year institution or private nonprofitfour-year institution in debt. The average debtis $32,528. The debt for college athletes?Nothing. Thats a $32,528 difference. Theirsometimes full ride scholarship is enough forathletes. College athletes dont have to worryabout student loans, paying for textbooks, thecost of on-campus living, and meal plans. All ofit is covered. McCauley says, College is aplace for people to obtain a degree and help

jumpstart their real world career aspirations.Whether people want to capitalize on that

opportunity or not is on them. However it is nota place for athletes to get paid to play sports, thats why the professional level exists.Remember student comes first instudent-athlete. Scholarships bring abouteducation, and education brings success.

Another problem with paying collegeathletes is the ambiguity in the importance ofeach sport. Would all the athletes get paid thesame amount? If so, that certainly seemsstrange and borderline unfair. However, thatplayer may put just as much effort into their

work. Is it their fault that they werent able toair on national television? One player can onlygo so far. The NCAA reported that 28.3 millionviewers watched the 2015 NCAA MensDivision I National Championship betweenWisconsin and Duke. They also reported therewere 3.1 million viewers for the 2015 NCAAWomens Division I National Championshipbetween Notre Dame and UConn. Thenumbers are very different. Some may saythat the men should be paid because of howmuch more money they generate. However, the women may put just as much work in. Is ittheir fault that the public is less interested? The same goes for division II and III. Whyshouldn't they be paid if they put just as much

work into practice, travel, and games?

NCAA March Madness tourn ament average TV view ershipfrom 2014

Student-athletes are amateurs whochoose to participate in intercollegiate athleticsas a part of their educa tional experi ence. Forthose who have nothing because their sportdidnt make them rich and famous thats theirown fault. If they didnt take educationseriously, thats their own wrong-doing. Thereare thousands of stude nts who dont pl aysports and fail out of c ollege each year andthey receive little to no sympathy from the

general public. Even if an athlete does not getinto the professionals, they at least made aname for themselves. It will help them find a

job when they graduate - - debt free - - out ofcollege. College is a place where people aremeant to get ready for their career in the realworld. It is up to the student -athlete to maketheir decisions. You must take personalresponsibility. You cannot change thecircumstances, the seasons, or the wind, butyou can change yourself. That is somethingyou have charge of.

    -Jim Rohn

This question will be asked one more time: Should collegeathletes be paid?

Coaching leading to greatsuccessby: Jackson L.

    Mike Ditka

Do you think that good coaching leads togreat success? Well I certainly do and here aresome reasons. When you have a good coachtheir players want to work hard for them.Coaches that are leaders can help their playerslater on in his/her life. Good coaches wingames which lead to super bowls. Goodcoaching in sports lead to great success.

Coaches that are leaders can help theirplayers later on in his/her life. A Timberwolvesplayer said, He was a great friend of mine thathad a great influence on me. And a Ravensand Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith says,My coach inspired me to do great things in mylife. This shows how coaches are greatleaders and inspire them.

Vince Lombardi, one of the most famous and mostsuccessful coach ever.

Did you ever ask yourself why players workhard? Well part of that reason is because oftheir coach. Vince Lombardi is a greatexample everybody wanted to play for himbecause he was a great role model for hisplayers. Another example is part of thereason the panthers are so good this year isbecause of their coaches, they make themwant to put in the time/ practice. Thats whyplayers work hard.

According to a Loveland 6th grade studentthey said The coaches need to be hard ontheir players to make them put in everythinghave if they dont do that and the coaches

dont care they will lose. And another 6thgrade student from Loveland said A greatcoach, and players who are willing to work hard toreach their goal.

Bill Belichick has won 4 super bowls and hisrecord is 245-121, thats pretty impressive.

It makes sense but statistics show that goodcoaching wins games which lead tochampionship games. Although people mightsay that winning and success is all about skill, while some of that is true coaching matters alot more, because when you play with heartenergy, and when you are playing forsomeone they will 9 out of 10 times beat thosewith just skill. According to football babble theystate, when players are excited about playingfor their coaches they usually do well. Toshow you the statistics Bill Belichick has won

4 super bowls and his record was 245-121.Also if you look at some of the mostinspirational coaches in the league theyusually do pretty well. And that pretty muchproves how coaches have the wins to show forit.

Coaches are the most important personthe field. Good coaching in sports leads togreat success on and off the field. When youhave a good coaches their players want towork hard for them. Coaches that are leaderscan help his players later on in his/her life.Good coaches usually win a lot of games andwhich leads to great success. According to a

    Name Day Month Year

    Hitlers Problemsby: Abigail Hutchinson

People doing the Heil Hitler! sign.

    itler and is Issues

Hail Hitler! Im sure we allconnect these words with AdolfHitler, a guy with pretty seriousproblems. But exactly how many

did Hitler actually have, and Im not just talking about what he did to

the Jews in the Holocaust. Mostpeople would prefer if Hitler justreally was that evil, and publicopinion matters. People have

specifically researched Hitler; andthey all say that although Adolf

Hitler did have medical problems, itcouldnt be responsible for tryingto kill all of those Jewish people.Again, public opinion matters. And

having hypochondria doesntexactly relate to the fact thatyoure trying to kill the whole of

the Jewish nation! Now therecomes a question: how can

physical and mental disorders beresponsible for trying to wipe out

an entire nation? This isntprobable, and these following

paragraphs show that it isnt justimprobable; its impossible. Why does the last paragraph

say that most people prefer thatHitler was actually that bad?Because they really do. Accordingto a recent survey, eleven out ofthe fourteen people thatanswered said they would preferif Hitler was to be blamed forwhathe did, and not his medicalissues. And yes, you didnt read thethat if Hitlers various illnessesdid have something to do with it, then

    This is a cartoon doctor...

text wrong when it saidearlier that Hitler had problemswith his health. I think regardlessof medical issues, a person isresponsible for their own actionsunless they are completelyunaware of those actions. saysMrs. Swartz, a 6th/5th gradeadvanced language arts teacher. She means that even if Adolf

Hitler had medical issues (which hedid), he was still responsible forwhat he did because he wascompletely notified of what hewas doing to everybody. There isan article called Insane or JustEvil? A Psychiatrist Takes a NewLook at Hitler, and it says this inits conclusion: Ultimately, thepsychiatrist portrays Hitler as aman who was more than the sumof his pathology, entirelyresponsible for his actions. So inthe psychiatrists opinion, Hitlersvarious illnesses werentresponsible for his actions. Andyou might want to note that thisman has researched Hitlersdiseases, and knows all aboutthem. So yes, people really doprefer Hitler just being evil.

Narcissism has nothingwhatsoever to do with Hitlertrying to kill all of the Jews.

Narcissism is excessive or eroticinterest in oneself and ones

physical appearance. What in theworld does that have to do with

Hitler trying to do what he did!?! Inthe article mentioned earlier,

    (Insane or Just Evil? A

This image is not full size, so Hitler will look a little weird.

Psychiatrist Takes a New Lookat Hitler) they state some ofHitlers illnesses: paranoia, narcissism, anxiety, depression, hypochondria And these arenowhere near the whole list! Ive

already shown what narcissism is,but now let me explain more of

them. Paranoia is a mentalcondition characterized bydelusions of persecution, unwarranted jealousy, or

    exaggerated self-importance,typically elaborated into an

organized system. Anxiety is anervous disorder characterized

by a state of excessiveuneasiness and apprehension,

typically with compulsive behaviorof panic attacks. Depression is afeeling of severe despondency

and dejection. Lastly, hypochondriais abnormal anxiety about ones

    health, especially with an

unwarranted fear that one has aserious disease. There is also anarticle called Did Adolf Hitler hav

a Mental Disorder?, and it addone more specific illness that

Hitler may have had: ...his changin attitude could also be another

sign for being bipolar. Beingbipolar means a psychiatric illness

that is characterized by bothmanic and depressive episodes.

What does all of that have to do

with Hitler trying to wipe out allof the Jews? Answer: Nothing.Hitler did have an old grudgeagainst Jews, but was that

    because of mental illnesses?Absolutely not!

How can a bunch of mentalillnesses make Hitler do what he

did? They cant, especially if thesedisorders werent even

connected to what one of themost feared dictators in the

world did. Some people may say

  • 7/25/2019 Argument Articles Volume 1

    23/32

he would at least be a little easierto understand. What they dont

see is that most people dont wantto understand Hitler, becauseHitler being the cause of it all

would give them an easy targetfor blame. In Insane or Just Evil?A Psychiatrist Takes a New Lookat Hitler, it has this to say on whymost people would prefer to notunderstand Hitler: Some haveargued that any attempt to explain

Hitler is wrong, becauseunderstanding inevitably breedexcuse. The text is saying that

because people dont want Hitlerto have an excuse for what he

did, they dont want to understandwhat may have caused him to doso. Hitler being bipolar may have

had something to do with his beingso brutal, but the article wasnteven sure that hewas bipolar.Remember, they said that his

change in how he actedcould havebeen a sign of his being bipolar. How Hitlers various, unrelated

illnesses could have caused whathe did to so many people, somedont know how to comprehend.

    In yet another article, called

Was Hitler Ill? A Final Diagnosis, the beginning line says this: Noexcuses, says Yvonne Sherratt:

the Fuhrers enormities cannot beblamed on insanity. They say thisbecause the German dictator didwhat he did, and not because of

some sickness he had. Adolf Hitlerwas fully responsible of what he

did to everybody, and hisdisorders were not to blame forit. Most people think Hitler was

just that bad, and want it to staythat way. All of the very informedarticles that Ive read ended withthe conclusion that Hitler was toblame, not his medical problems.

Last time Im going to say this, butpublic opinion matters. And think

about the fact that most ofHitlers medical issues didnt even

have anything to do with what heddone. Again; how is it possible that

a bunch of medical problemscould have made Hitler do what he

did? There is more than enoughinformation in these paragraphsto practically scream HITLERWAS THE CULPRIT!! out to the

world. Well, AufWiedersehen, as the Germans say. That means goodbye in German,

    if you want to know.

osgrove Times Hanna Cosgrove January 4, 2016

    by: Hanna Cosgrove

Have you ever been told to sit still byone of your teachers. I am sure we all have. You might just be bored, but could it reallyhelp you out in the long run? Most studentswould prefer to sit in a bean bag or on a yoga

ball instead of sitting in the common hard, boring, desk chair. The slight movement thatthese alternate seating choices offer improvesthe focus in students. The alternate seatingchoice could improve posture which decreases

back pain or soreness some kids may acquire by sitting in hard, desk, chairs. Does sitting ina different chair allow kids performance inclass to turn out better? Lets find out!

A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind. Morihei Ueshiba oncesaid. Alternate seating allows good posture tocome a lot easier than a desk chair.Eighth-grader Julian Poellinger says the ballhelps him with his posture. Julian is notalone, Lindsey Barry and Mikayla Loomissixth graders from LIS both agree. The

rounded surface of the ball forces you to sit ina more upright position. Mikayla Loomis toldme. Lindsey has only sat in the ball a fewtimes, but says, The few times I have sat onthe balls, I noticed a difference. I have alsonoticed a difference in my classmates posturewhen they sit on the balls. Chelsea a workerat Sitbetter wrote an article on the positives ofalternate seating. One of the things she saidwas, Perhaps the greatest benefit that will begained by sitting on an alternative seating chairis improved posture and core strength. She

went on to say, A health benefit that is gained by sitting with proper posture is reduced back pain. Back pain can harm children as well asadults. All students would like to go home

pain free than arrive home with an ache in their back. Wouldnt you!

Above is a lady sitting on a yoga ball chairat her desk. As you can see she has quitegood posture.

The slight movement that alternate seatingchoices allow can improve the focus in

students. Adeline Monks a sixth grader atLoveland Intermediate School said that,Moving around on the ballallows your brain to think faster improvingfocus. She herself notices an improvement infocus while sitting on the ball. Mrs. Floresfrom the Jewett School of Arts knows,Students have the freedom to wiggle andlightly bounce on the b alls as they work, whichhelps eliminate the jitters common inmiddle-schoolers, and keeps them focused forlonger periods. Being focused allows you toconcentrate on your classwork. When you aretotally focused on classwork your grades willlikely be higher, which is a good thing forevery single kid.

Overall kids would choose alternate seatsover desk chairs. In a classroom survey takenat Loveland Intermediate School proves thiswith 90% of kids choosing alternate seatingover desk chairs. In multiple classroomsaround the US, teachers have noticed theirstudents want to sit in these chairs. Mrs. CarolHunter said that, The kids almost race downthe hall to make sure they get a ball. Whenkids run towards a classroom they reallywant/like what is in that classroom. InKarlienas classroom, she gave her class theoption to sit in the alternate seats. Every kidchose a beanbag or yoga chair. All of this

proves that kids prefer yoga balls over deskchairs. Now, some people might claim thatyoga ball chairs can distract the kids takingaway from their learning experience. Withthat, their teacher can decide if they areresponsible enough to sit on a ball or whateveris available. The positives outweigh thenegatives in this situation. A kid can bedistracted by the alternate seating, but the kidsthat use it to focus really benefit from theopportunity.

Children would much rather sit in alternateseating options like yoga ball chairs and

    bean bags over desk chairs.

Alterna te seating improves performance in allkids in a fun, creative way. It is even suitablefor an office chair. Adults can use the benefitstoo. Overall the increase in focus, improved

posture, and the enjoyment and fun of it allreally proves alternate seating is better to havein classrooms than a regular chair.
