Hey 4-H Youth Members! Callie Cat wants you to read the 4-H newsletter! If

you are reading the newsletter, you could have the opportunity to win a prize of $15 each

Submissions will be due the last day of the month that the newsletter comes out (eg. for the January newsletter, the Callie Cat submissions will be due January 31, 2017)

Once submissions are received, all submissions with at least 13/15 correct answers will

be put into a drawing and three winners will be selected at the closest Federation of Taylor County 4-H meeting.

Winners will be notified after the Federation of Taylor County 4-H meeting following the

submission date. Winners will be responsible to collect their prize from the UW-Extension office.

2017 4-H Summer Camp

Taylor County will be camping again with Waupaca, Portage,

and Lincoln Counties. Registration information for campers

will be available in the March/April 4-H Newsletter.

Junior Camp, 2nd—4th graders: June 9-10, 2017, at the

Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES), Amherst

Junction, and WI.

Intermediate Camp, 5th—8th graders: June 29-July,

2017, at Upham Woods, Wisconsin Dells, WI.

4-H summer camp is a great opportunity for youth. During

camp there are countless opportunities to participate in fun,

age-appropriate programming, meet other 4-H members, and

develop life skills such as leadership, responsibility, social

skills, cooperation, teamwork, self-esteem, critical thinking

and so much more! We hope you will consider joining us for

camp this summer to have a great experience that you’ll

remember for a lifetime!

Camp Counselors Needed!

Are you in 9th grade or above and wish to be a summer camp

counselor for junior or intermediate camp? Camp counselors

are required to be mature and able to relate to campers and

staff. They must take leadership responsibility and be able to

help evaluate camp. Most qualified applicants will have

experience as a camper or counselor. Camp counselors will

be chosen based on how closely they meet the criteria of the

position. Counselors will be expected to participate in camp

counselor training and all camp activities. Camp counselors

will serve as a counselor for 5-10 4-H members. See more

details in the next column and look for an application coming

to you in the mail or find it on the Taylor County UW-

Extension website under 4-H trips information. Applications

are due February 17th 2017 to the Extension Office at 925

Donald St. Room 103, Medford, WI 54451. Selections will be

made soon after.

Camp Counselor Roles

Intermediate or Junior Camp Director:

Requirements: At least 10th grade at the time of selection;

must be mature and able to relate to campers and staff; must

take leadership responsibility and be able to evaluate

counselors; should have experience as a counselor.

Cabin Counselor:

Requirements: At least 9th grade at time of selection; must be

mature and be able to relate to campers and staff; should have

experience as a camper. Cabin counselors serve up to eight

4-H members.

Resource Counselor:

Requirements: At least 9th grade at time of selection; must be

mature and able to relate to campers and staff; should have

experience as a camper. Must be able to lead group

activities—arts & crafts, nature activities, or games and

recreation.

Benefits of being a 4-H Camp Counselor include but are not

limited to: an opportunity to be a role model to younger

members, meeting other 4-H members, learning or improve

leadership skills like communication, planning, decision

making, and responsibility.

Adult Chaperones and Nurse Needed!

Another important role during camp is adult chaperone. Adult

chaperones must be 21 or older and have completed the 4-H

Leader training. Adult chaperones are a crucial part of camp.

We cannot run camp without devoted adults. In past years,

there has been a need for more adults to volunteer, especially

adult male chaperones.

We will need 1 adult per 10 campers as mandated by the state,

and 1 nurse. This experience is not a “vacation” for adults, but

it can be both enjoyable and rewarding. It is necessary to have

enough adults to provide a safe camp and to be able to provide

impactful programming that youth will learn valuable life

skills from and remember for a lifetime.

Please consider being an adult chaperone if you meet the

qualifications. We will only be able to send youth to camp if

we have enough chaperones. If you are interested, please

submit a half page letter of interest including why you would

like to volunteer as an adult chaperone and your experience

working in a camp setting. Letters can be sent to the Extension

office at 925 Donald Street Room 103, Medford, WI 54451 or

emailed to sasha.busjahn@ces.uwex.edu by February 17,

2017.

“Learning by Doing” Club Video Challenge

Show other clubs what your club does best! Make a club collaboration video (use smart phone/camera/video camera to record a one to three minute video on one of the topics listed below. Be creative and ask the UW-Extension office if you need resources to help you create your video. Videos will be accepted until April 1, and must be fully edited when turned in the Extension office. Most creative and educational video will receive a prize. Videos will be shared with the county.

Record Book Request

Start keeping your 4-H records now! Record Books are updated for the 2016-17 4-H year. You can learn more and/or request your record book by going to http://taylor.uwex.edu/4-h/record-books/. Once record books are requested they will be available within one week, unless contacted by the UW-Extension Office. Books that are not collected by members from the UW-Extension office will be distributed to club leaders or representatives.

S.T.E.M. Drone Discovery Program

January 26. Want to get a feel for what a drone can do? What can drones be used for? How could you use a drone in your life? These are all questions you could answer on January 26, 4:00 p.m. at the Gilman Village Park. Resume Writing & Interview Workshop

Tentative date February 10. Are you or someone you know a middle school, high school, or adult who has graduated that would be interested in attending a resume writing and interview workshop? This workshop would not be limited to 4-H members. If so, please register by Friday, January 13. Environmental Education

Outdoor Survival Skills

February 27. Have you ever been outside during the winter and wondered how you would make it if you ever got stranded? Come learn some basic survival skills such as shelter building and how to use your resources and wits when the weather is not so balmy. Come dressed ready to go outside! 2017 Plat Book Coming Soon!

The new Taylor County Plat Book will be coming out in early 2017. Look for information in the next newsletter and in email blasts to find out when it is ready to go. Once the Plat Book is ready to be printed, we will need lots of help putting them together. Remember this is a great opportunity to earn money for your club; every plat book made will earn $3 for your club.

Any club wanting to make plat books needs to give the UWEX Office 24 hour notice. This notice is so books can be ready and to make sure that the room is available. Please call us at 715-748-3327 x 4 or 9.

What is MAQA? Meat Animal Quality Assurance is a program provided for youth to educate them and improve understanding on the basics of animal husbandry and general management practices in raising a project animal. This program provides a foundation of animal management for youth of all ages. The educational value surpasses any exhibition requirements that might exist. Who is required to attend? Market Animal Show and Sale (MASS) members and anyone who will sell a market animal at the Taylor County fair and or show and sell a market animal at the WI State Fair. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate also! What to bring: Bring your MASS rule & regulations book with you to obtain signature for your par ticipation in a required MAQA training. No other hands-on MAQA Training dates will be offered in Taylor County during 2017. To find trainings in other counties visit http://fyi.uwex.edu/maqa/maqa-meetings/

This training will be cancelled if there are not enough participants signed up by Friday, January 13.

Hold a Project Meeting. Many 4-H members are not sure where to begin with their 4-H projects and could benefit from hands on project meetings. After all, the slogan of 4-H is “Learning by doing”, right? If you would like to hold a project meeting available to the whole county, email meeting information to Sasha or call 715-748-1981.

Never held a project meeting but would like to and aren’t sure where to start? A Project Leader Meeting for Taylor County 4-H leaders is scheduled for April 10 at 5 p.m. at the UW-Extension building. This meeting is a chance for leaders to learn from other leaders and from Extension 4-H materials about how to hold a project meeting and what you can do during a meeting. Taylor County Fair Manager Wanted—Do you or someone you know have a passion for the Taylor County Fairboard’s mission accompanied with great business sense? A Volunteer in Preparation training session will be held on February 8 at 5 p.m. at the UW-Extension building for adults who would like to become 4-H Leaders. All 4-H Leaders are a part of the Federation of Taylor County 4-H Leaders Board and have voting r ights. Each club should have a representative attending Federation meetings to help make decisions at the county level for the Taylor County 4-H Program and to report back to their club. Each club also has one standing spot on the Executive Board of the Federation.

Be an Adult Chaperone for a 4-H trip. Adult Chaperones must be approved 4-H Leaders who are 21 years or older. See an opportunity to be an Adult Chaperone for this year’s 4-H Summer Camps on page 5.

Lego Robotics Adult Project Leader Training—We need three more leaders to sign up to hold this training! If you are an approved Adult 4-H Leader, consider attending a Lego Robotics training on January 25, 2017, at 5 p.m. at the UW-Extension building . The training will be led by State UW-Extension Science Technology Math and Engineering (STEM) Specialist, Joanna Skluzacek and will last approximately 2.5 hours. Once you become trained, UW-Extension staff can help you locate a Lego Robotics kit

2017-18 federation of Taylor County 4-h Executive Board officers

Congratulations to the new 2017-18 Federation of Taylor County 4-H Executive Board Officers! This coming year’s Federation President will be Brian Bolstad of Poplar Grove, Vice President Katie Krause of Liberty, Treasurer Wendy Rudolph of Countrysiders, and Secretary Bailey Krause of Liberty. Standing members of the board include: Virginia Ustianowski of Diamond Lakers, Tim Hobl of Little Farmers, Lanice Szomi of Little Whispers, Linda Lynch of Lucky Hills, and Jane Laub of Thrifty-Go-Getters. Youth representatives on the Federation board will be Allison Lynch of Lucky Hills, Kara Rudolph of Countrysiders, and Bailey Krause. Other elected positions include Fair Board 4-H Representatives which will be Lanice Szomi of Little Whispers and Dawn Rudolph of Liberty. Thank-you to all of the 2015-16 officers for their hard work this past year!

This year’s 4-H Annual Awards Banquet was held at the Medford High School on November 6th. 4-H Leaders and 4-H Youth Members were recognized for their 4-H year accomplishments.

Congratulations to all award recipients including Cloverbuds, Graduating Members, 2017 4-H Award Trip recipients, Milestone Leaders, Dorothy Halida for the Leader of the Year award, Cathy Mauer for the Friend of 4-H, Kara Rudolph for the Wisconsin 4-H Key Award, and to everyone else who received awards! We also got to hear about the educational 4-H trip experiences from 2016 4-H trip participants. It was a great day to come together to recognize and appreciate the hard work of peers and mentors.

The prestigious Wisconsin 4-H Key Award was presented to Kara Rudolph of Countrysiders 4-H for her dedication to the 4-H program as a youth leader. The award was presented by Ryan Klussendorf of Rural Mutual Insurance Company, a longtime sponsor of the WI 4-H Key Award.

The Friend of 4-H Award was presented to Cathy Mauer, UW-Extension Program Assistant, for her years of helping the 4-H program

The Volunteer of the Year Award for this year was awarded to Dorothy Halida, Club Co-Leader of Diamond Lakers 4-H, for her years of serving as an inspirational and devoted mentor to youth.

Club Leaders and Secretaries

Please be ready to turn in the status of your members of good standing by July 15, 2017, for fair, scholarship, and award trip purposes.

Club meeting minutes must be sent to the UW-Extension office in a timely manner after each club meeting. They can be mailed to the UW-Extension office Attn: Sasha at 925 Donald St. Room 103, Medford, WI 54451, or emailed to sasha.busjahn@ces.uwex.edu.

Taylor County 4-H Member in Good Standing

4-H members must be in good standing with their club and the county in order to be eligible for county awards, to represent Taylor County 4-H in state and national level events, and to receive reimbursements. Member-in-good-standing status will also be taken into consideration when future scholarships are awarded.

To be a member of good standing, you need to:

Re-enroll through 4-H Online by November 1.

Attend a minimum of three (3) club meetings.

Your club’s bylaws may require more meetings or community service than the county minimum. Please check with your club leader to make sure you are meeting both your club and the county’s member of good standing rules.

Bulletin Board for Club Use The UW-Extension/4-H bulletin board is available for clubs to use to promote their club. Please call or email Sasha at 715-748-1981 or sasha.busjahn@ces.uwex.edu to let her know if your club would like to choose a month to use the bulletin board. Clubs will be responsible for hang-ing up their materials at the beginning of the month and taking them down at the end of the month so that the next club can use the board. If a club does not take the materials down by the end of the month, Sasha will take them down and hold them for one month, after that the materials will be discarded. State & National 4-H New Deep Woods Cedar Crest Icecream—Will

your club create the 2018 flavor?

Deep Woods, developed by the Baraboo Valley 4-H Club, was chosen as the winner of the 2017 Cedar Crest Ice Cream 4-H Flavor Contest. Selected as the winner from the field of dozens of contestants, Deep Woods will be available statewide in time to celebrate June Dairy Month in 2017.

The winning flavor features vanilla ice cream with swirls of maple syrup and crunchy pecans. This flavor will be available in three-gallon tubs and on sale throughout the summer at ice cream parlors that serve Cedar Crest Ice Cream. It will also be available for sale at summer fairs and festival food stands. The Baraboo Valley 4-H Club will enjoy a Cedar Crest Ice Cream Party and a $300 cash prize. The club is led by Debra Nieuwenhuis of Sauk County.

“We are excited to continue this partnership with Cedar Crest, which allows 4-H clubs across the state to work together and put into practice the goals and mission of 4-H,” says Brenda Scheider, Director of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation. “Congratulations to the Baraboo Valley 4-H Club for their teamwork experimenting with different flavors to create the winning flavor.”

Wisconsin 4-H Leadership Council (WLC)

The Wisconsin 4-H Leadership Council (WLC) provides a statewide forum for youth and adult volunteer leaders to discuss ideas and provide input to enhance UW-Extension 4-H Youth Development programs at the state, county and local levels. WLC members:

Serve as leaders and role models for 4-H youth and adults

Advocate for Wisconsin 4-H Provide input for enhancing the 4-H program Provide educational opportunities to 4-H members and

leaders Connect the county, regional and state levels of Wisconsin

4-H, as well as the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation.

Elected at the annual Fall Forum, the WLC helps to plan that annual event, along with the State Youth Leader Conference and UW-Extension Day and Meat Products Auction at Wisconsin State Fair. WLC is a great opportunity for youth and adult leaders to expand their horizons and gain leadership skills.

If you are a 4-H youth or an adult 4-H leader or who is interested in joining the WLC, watch for details about Fall Forum in the July/August 4-H Newsletter. 4-H Art Beat!

4-H Art Beat! was created for 4-H members in grades 3-5 and their parents and leaders and is the introductory program for Wisconsin 4-H Arts and Communication! Art Beat! will be held March 17 and 18, 2017, at our State 4-H Camp, Upham Woods in the Wisconsin Dells. The weekend will feature a look at a variety of arts projects including music, drama, visual arts, and more!

4-H members will explore their own creativity while discovering the great variety of 4-H Arts & Communication experiences available to them now and in the near future. Session leaders will be 4-H older youth, adult leaders, and 4-H staff members with a wealth of experience to share. Youth and adult participants will rotate through a variety of sessions that are hands-on and active and held at various sites throughout camp. Both youth and adult participants stay in warm and cozy heated cabins! All adults will be considered camp chaperones.

Camp begins Friday evening at 7 pm and ends Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. The $50.00 fee will include all materials and supplies, (including a very cool ArtBeat! backpack!) special snacks, overnight lodging and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Why not get a whole carload of youth and adults together from your county for some genuine 4-H bonding time?

Wisconsin 4-H Foundation 2017

Scholarship Application Guidelines

The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation will award more than $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding Wisconsin students pursuing higher education in 2017. To be considered for financial support, applications must be received by the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation via email by March 15, 2017.

Wisconsin 4-H Foundation scholarships are awarded to students based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance and future educational goals. To be eligible for Wisconsin 4-H Foundation scholarships, students must have been a Wisconsin 4-H member for at least one year; have a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and be enrolled or planning to enroll at a university, college, or technical school during the 2017-2018 academic school year. Dairy Quizbowl & Dairy Management

Contests—January 28

It is again the time of year to start thinking about getting your county teams registered for the state 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Management Contests. This year the contests will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 again on the UW Madison Campus in the Sewell Socials Sciences Building.

Indianhead Sheep Breeders 2017

Shepherds’ Clinic—February 4th

The clinic will be held in the Conference Center of the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, 1900 College Drive, Rice Lake, WI 54868. This annual workshop continues to be one of the largest educational events of the winter for sheep producers and 4-H & FFA youth in the upper Midwest.

The 2017 Shepherds’ Clinic has been expanded to include goats as well as sheep. The program will focus on Profitability and Sustainability, Genetics and Reproduction, and Flock Health plus special breakout sessions for youth enrolled in 4-H and FFA livestock projects. The registration fee to attend the Shepherds’ Clinic is $45 per person for ISBA members and $50 per person for non-members. Members of the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Assn. receive a $5 discount off their registration fee. 4-H and FFA members pay only $15 per person for the Shepherds’ Clinic. The registration fee covers the program costs, refreshments, and the noon meal. The registration deadline is February 1, 2017. Late registrations cost an addition $10 for adults and $5 for youth.

1. All reimbursements are dependent on availability of funds (advance request recommended).

2. All events with total cost to Federation in excess of $75.00 will require advanced written notice mailed to the Federation Treasurer and will be subject to #3 below.

A pre-reimbursement form is required to be filled out one month in advance and mailed to the Federation Treasurer.

A post-reimbursement form will be also filled out after the event and returned to the Federation Treasurer within one month of the event.

3. Events in excess of $75.00 (cost to Federation) will be paid on a scale of 0-5, dependent on Executive Board’s judgment of the benefit to 4-H program or needed support of outstanding youth. To be decided at closest Executive Board or annual meeting. 0=0% 1=20% 2=40% 3=60% 4=80% 5=100%

4. The total miles driven multiplied by $0.41 will be the figure submitted as a reimbursement item. Mileage count will begin and end at local starting point.

5. All vouchers must be submitted to treasurer within 30 days of event. A brief statement of benefit to the 4-H program must be written on the official voucher.

6. If a member or leader incurs an expense that is to be billed to the Federation, pre- and post-reimbursement forms must be submitted before the bill can be paid. If the Federation is billed for costs without the proper approval, no reimbursements will be given to family for two years.

7. All 4-H Rules and Behavior Expectations must be honored by the youth and chaperones or you will forfeit the right for reimbursement.
