“Transforming Lives Through the Good News of Jesus Christ”

ARDMORE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10:30 A.M., March 10, 2019

First Sunday in Lent

2

We welcome you warmly to Ardmore Presbyterian Church where we strive to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. We are especially thankful for visitors. If you require large print Bibles or hymnals, or bulletins for the children, please speak to an usher. Following worship, we invite everyone for refreshments and fellowship in the Narthex.

At the end of each pew by the center aisle is the Friendship Pad — Please take a moment to write down your name and address, e-mail address, and pass it along the pew. You may then pass it back for all to know who is sitting next to them.

If you have a prayer request, you may place it in the floral box (Narthex). Our Prayer Fellowship gathers each week to pray for those on our Hugs List and any special prayer requests. If you need to leave the Sanctuary during worship, you may continue to listen to the service in the chapel. Please silence all cell phones and beepers during worship service.

Do you want to get a head start in preparing for Sunday worship? The Sunday bulletin is sent out with This Week at APC by e-mail on Fridays. An audio recording of Sunday’s sermon is posted online at http://ardmorepres.org/faith/sermons/ — Please spread the word to those who are interested in listening to the sermon.

The term “voluntary” is used to denote a piece of music or improvisation for instrument, played before, during, or at the end of a church service.

Lent is a liturgical season which consists of forty days beginning on Ash Wednesday and

ending on Holy Saturday (day before Easter). The six Sundays in Lent, as all Sundays, are

feast days in honor of the Resurrection, and are therefore in Lent and not of Lent. The

purpose of observing Lent is for all Christians to intentionally, through self-discipline, deepen

their own personal faith, purify their hearts from sin, and unite more closely to God through

Christ.

APPROACHING THE THRONE OF GRACE Preparing for Worship

“. . . If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved” (Romans 10:9-10).

MAKING OUR CONFESSION Call to Confession Prayer of Confession

God our Redeemer: We confess that we are people of ashes and dusts — You have claimed us in your covenant, yet we often forget your steadfast love; you seek us out in the wilderness, yet we continue to wander in our sin.

Forgive us, God of grace. Wash us clean, once again, so that we may return to you and follow your holy way; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Silent Reflection (Reflecting on the Prayer of Confession) Assurance of Pardon

Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed (2nd-8th c.) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

GIVING TO GOD Anthem, Chancel Choir Psalm 91 Craig Courtney (1996) Children’s Time Gerry Gaugler

(Children PreK–8th grade are invited to come forward, PreK - 2nd are invited to Children’s Church in the Parlor afterwards.

The children will be brought back to the Narthex at 11:40 a.m.)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication

You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, Who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, Say to the Lord, “My refuge, my fortress, My God in whom I trust.” He will deliver you from the fowler’s snare, And under His wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness shall be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror by night Or the arrow that flies by day, Or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, Or ravages at midday.

A thousand may fall at your side, Ten thousand at your right hand; But you will not be harmed. If you make the Most High your dwelling — Even the Lord, who is my refuge, Then no harm will befall you; No scourge will approach your tent. He will give His angels charge over you; On their hands they will lift you up, Lest you strike your foot upon a stone.

— Psalm 91:1-7, 9-12

O love, how deep, how broad, how high, How passing thought and fantasy, That God, the Son of God should take Our mortal form for mortal’s sake. For us he prayed, for us he taught, For us his daily works he wrought

By works and signs and actions, thus Still seeking not himself, but us. All glory to our Lord and God For love so deep, so high, so broad; The Trinity whom we adore Forever and forever more. Amen. — Latin 15th c., tr. Webb

SEALING THE WORD - HOLY COMMUNION Communion Hymn #87 The Glory of These Forty Days erhalt uns, herr

Invitation to the Lord’s Table Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts, We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O God our creator and redeemer. In your wisdom, you made all things and sustain them by your power.

You formed us in your image to love and serve you, but we forgot your promises and abandoned your commandments. In your mercy, you did not reject us but still claimed us as your own.

When we were slaves in Egypt you freed us and led us through the waters of the sea. You fed us with heavenly food in the wilderness, and satisfied our thirst from desert springs. On the holy mountain you gave us your law to guide us in your way. Through the waters of Jordan you led us into the land of your promise, and you sustained us in times of trial. You spoke through prophets calling us to turn from our willful ways to new obedience and righteousness. You sent your only Son to be the way to eternal life.

6

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. He took upon himself the weight of our sin and carried the burden of our guilt. He shared our life in every way, and though tempted, was sinless to the end. Baptized as your own, he went willingly to his death and by your power was raised to new life. In his dying and rising, you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

Remembering all your mighty and merciful acts, we take this bread and this cup from the gifts you have given us, and celebrate with joy the redemption won for us in Jesus Christ. Accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving as a living and holy offering of ourselves, that our lives may proclaim the One crucified and risen.

Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory.

Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and cup, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By your Spirit unite us with the living Christ, and with all who are baptized in his name, that we may be one in ministry in every place. As this bread is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body of Christ in the world.

Help us, O God, to be obedient to your call to love all your children, to do justice and show mercy, and to live in peace with your whole creation.

7

Guide us through the desert of life, quench our thirst with the living waters, satisfy our hunger with the bread of heaven.

Give us strength to serve you faithfully until the promised day of resurrection, when with the redeemed of all the ages we will feast with you at your table in glory.

Through Christ, all glory and honor are yours, almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit in the holy church, now and forever.

And now, with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray:

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Breaking the Bread and Blessing of the Cup

Communion of the People

Prayer After Communion Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

What Happened on This Day in Christian History Balthasar Hubmaier, one of the foremost leaders of the Austrian Anabaptists, was burned at the stake as a heretic in the public square of Vienna on March 10, 1528. Three days later his faithful wife was drowned in the Danube. Hubmaier was called “one of the purest spirits of

the Reformation.” On or about March 10, 1554, Nicholas Ridley, bishop of London, along with Thomas Cranmer, archbishop of Canterbury, and Hugh Latimer, were taken from their cells in the Tower of London to Oxford University to debate Reformation truth with the professors there. From there, the three heroes were sent to the common prison at Barcardo

and later executed. English Quaker William Penn received a charter from King Charles II on this day in 1681 which made him the sole proprietor of the colonial American territory

known today as the state of Pennsylvania. John B. Dykes, Anglican clergyman and writer of nearly 300 hymns, was born on March 10, 1823, in Hull, England. Many of his hymns first appeared in Hymns Ancient and Modern. His more popular hymns today are “Eternal Father,

Strong to Save” (melita) and “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty” (nicaea) George Mueller was a German who, following a life of sin and imprisonment, became a far-famed Christian, opening orphanages in England and doing evangelistic work around the globe. His efforts procured millions of dollars for Christian causes and cared for more than 10,000 orphans, but when he died on this day in 1898 (age 93), his possessions were valued at only $800.

SERMON NOTES

The Hills of Lent is a series of six Lenten services which use various biblical mountains (in a somewhat chronological order) as their settings: Mount Moriah, Mount Sinai, Mount Carmel, Mount Zion, Mount Olive, and Mount Calvary. Even those with Old Testament backgrounds look forward with conscious Lenten emphasis to the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as their focus.

March 13 — At Mount Sinai, God our Savior continues to direct us on our journey to the Promised Land.

March 20 — At Mount Carmel, faith and faithfulness are called for, even in the face of opposition.

March 27 — At Mount Zion, God is offered the worship and praise He so richly deserves.

April 3 — At Mount Olive, God’s children are assured that His goodwill for us is surely being done.

April 13 — At Mount Calvary, toward which all these other mountains point — we view “God’s own sacrifice complete.”

Each Wednesday evening at 6:00, we will begin with supper in Fellowship Hall, with the service starting at 6:30. Each service involves the Responsive Reading of four Psalms from the “Psalms of Ascent” section of the Psalter (120 to 134). The first of these is always the thematic Psalm 121 (“I lift up my eyes to the hills”) and the fourth is Psalm 134 which serves as a kind of Salutation and Response for the Prayer of the Day which follows. Other than appropriate Scripture readings in the service, there are also congregational hymns being sung throughout. The meditation is done in the form of dramatic readings by a narrator and several participants, with the congregation participating in the singing of successive stanzas of the Theme Hymn, “Unto the Hills.” Each service ends with the celebration of Holy Communion. “Lift up your eyes to the hills” each week as you join God’s faithful people on this annual pilgrimage to the foot of the Cross and anticipate celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord on Easter Sunday, April 21!
