Since the ancient times, residential Feng Shui affect people’s living environment. It has an inextricable connection with the Five Elements, the Yin and Yang theory, and the spatial aesthetics. The principles of Feng Shui enhance our modern lives, when used wisely, they help bring balance and success.

This unique Richmond Hill home showcased exactly how the five elements was incorporated into the modern home decoration. Facing exactly 270 degree West, the house takes in the energy of Yang Fire.

Light and space bring the outside into the interior with a high-raised ceiling, bright open rooms, and a superbly finished basement.

A warm-toned white and dark floors was used throughout the house. This not only made choosing decor to match such neutral colour easier, it also exude solidity and steadiness against light walls.

Living RoomThe living room and the dinning room situated on the Northwest of the house which embody the water element. According to the Five Elements theory, metal enriches water. Hence, white and metallic ornaments (representing metal) and shades of black (representing water) were used to manifest positivity.

The family room sits in the Southeast corner of the house. It is the largest room on the main floor and its piece de resistance, the fireplace.

Above the fireplace is a painting of a tree framed in a red border, this represents “fire with wood” which formed a delightful contract with the flames below.

FamiLy Room

The atmosphere throughout the entire house is Zen-like, as if deeper meaning lies just under the surface.

Both gold and silver are considered to be of the element metal, and therefore, they make a good pair when decorating.

Architects often place kitchen sinks near stoves but water and fire are incompatible.

In this home, a wooden feature was placed near the sink and stove. The wood will put into motion the cosmic cycle of water enriching wood and wood feeding fire, and therefore, harmony achieved.

The master bedroom embraced an attention-grabbing wardrobe. The ensuite bathroom was also transformed to achieve a balanced energy flow, since in Feng Shui, a toilet should never face the bedroom.

The sconces were placed a distacne from the bed, since lamps directly above a bed can suppress sleepers energy and lead to health concerns.

BasementThroughout two bedrooms, a bathroom, gym and media room, tidy, elegant and beautiful furniture banished the feeling of being underground and the Five Elements set everything right. For example, the gym was built into the northeast corner which corresponds to wood and the element of fire. If we physically reflect the cosmic order of things, our lives will move into greater harmony.

The media room in the newly finished basement is the centre of every house, which embraces the element of earth. Here, browns and beiges accentuate that principle. A fur area rug is not only eye-cathcing but also fire begets earth in the Five Elements theory. Since fur represents fire, this earth will prosper!

The basement of a house is very important because it is like a person’s foundation.

The ensuite bathroom in the basement is installed with window-like lightboxes. When on, the bather has the sense of being above ground.
