My Brother Knights More Than Gold! What an experience for us all including all ages, all cultures, this was the message, the Light given to all who are united in faith. Yes, the impossible becomes possible! As I was doing my volunteer service at 150 Robson St. Archdiocese Offices, I felt as if I have already won the Gold by noticing around me the Youth volunteers of our Parish, CWL ladies, More Than Gold Official Coordinators, his Excellency Bishop J. Michael Miller and others who with their open hearts were welcoming our brothers and sisters from around the world who came to the Robson Center to share their stories and their words of gratitude with great Joy. Lent is the time when there are sacrifices to be made. Let us reflect on how to reach for the gold by committing ourselves, how to best serve our Lord by giving our time and love during this journey of lent.

Knight Of the Month for February

Raul Sagarbarria

Bro. Raul Sagarbarria joined the Knights in June, 2008. He’s been very enthusiastic in serving our council in the sports events such as the Basketball Coed Tournament, Council and District Free throw Shoot-out and the 6855 K of C Basketball versus St. Paul Youth Basketball Tournament in which the youth of our community are involved. He serves as an usher during Sunday masses and together with his wife, Catherine are members of the Parish’ Welcome Committee. He regularly helps in the set up and preparation of our monthly Pancake Breakfast. Congratulations, Brother Raul and I wish you all the very best.

Kevin & Bridget Mendonca

Family Of the Month for February

Our Councils’ annual Knights of Columbus Charity Appeal Lottery tickets sales drive was a success once again. This is due to the hard work and dedication of our Charity appeal Chairman Brother Kevin Mendonca, who is our council’s present Chancellor and Program Director. Throughout the year, Kevin and his wife Bridget, together with their children, have contributed their time and talent to the good of the order and have assisted in every major council event. Their son Robert altar serves, while their daughter Gabriella assists in the Religious Education for Children (PREP) and both are active members of St. Paul Youth Ministry with their youngest sibling Mikhail tagging along. Our council archive is enriched by the photos they have taken during some of our council’s events. Congratulations, Brother Kevin & Bridget Mendonca.

WELCOME & CONGRATULATIONS To all candidates, their sponsors and councils from other jurisdictions for taking the opportunity to take their 1st Degree Exemplification at our February 22, Degree Ceremony. Thanks to all who came to support as well the Degree Team for the excellent work they did. CONGRATULATIONS

Also Congratulations to our families who recently became parents again; our council best wishes that these

new stars bring love and happiness into your homes.

Did you know?

Brother Elio & Diane Gasparetto

Bro. Elio and Diane Gasparetto are long time residents of Richmond and regular parishioners of St. Paul Parish. They have two children, Audra and Damian and are now the proud grandparents of four grandchildren. A very devoted couple, Elio & Diane joined the Knights Family in 1991 and during these 19 years, they have served the Parish, Community and our Order in many different ways. They visit and minister communion to the sick, always eager to give a helping hand such as giving lift to anyone who needs a ride and presently, they are involved with the RCIA program. During the Easter Vigil, Bro. Elio builds the fire that lights the Easter Candle. He ushers at Sunday masses while Diane is a lector during

the week. Elio is an avid gardener and it is not surprising to see their well-manicured yard, landscaped with array of flowers. As an executive officer, Brother Elio holds the position of Warden, Council Director, in-charge of the Pancake Breakfast crew, first degree team member, visiting of the sick and council bar chairman. In all of our Council fundraising events, they always take charge of the bartenders’ duties. Bro. Elio tempers his participation with a sense of humour that makes it a pleasure to have him around. Brother Elio was Knight of the Year in 2003, Iron Man of the Year in 2002 and the Community Service Award in 2006. They were the recipient of the prestigious Family of the Year award in 1997. Brother Elio and Diane are truly the unsung heroes of our Order and this, our council is really lucky!

COMMUNITY BREAKFAST February 14 Valentine’s Day breakfast was short of the expected attendance due mostly to the ongoing Olympic activities in our City. However, the support of our parish Youth and Brother Knights was very visible. My sincere thanks to all. FOOD for FAMILIES

Our food for Families collection has been very low. I hope that during this month of March we all reflect on the needs of our less fortunate brothers and sisters and let’s be a little more generous, particularly when we attend our meetings. SPORTS COED TOURNAMENT The opening ceremony of the Annual Coed Youth Basketball Tournament on February 20, 27 brought joy and enthusiasm to the participating athletes as well as to their parents and families who showed up to give their support in good numbers. FAMILY ROSARY Again, last month’s Family Rosary was at our Financial Secretary Brother Alberto and Alma Nisperos’ residence and had a good number of participants and was very special by the friendliness shown and shared by all the families present thus giving the mutual feeling of family unity. Thank you, Brother Alberto and Alma. CHARITY APPEAL

Brothers, again as we concluded our annual Charity Appeal Raffle sales. It’s with great sadness that I have to inform you this time our council did not have any winners on Final draws here are the results Special thanks to each and every one of you for your support.

2nd Annual Coed Youth Basketball Tournament – Tip-off Feb 20, 2010

In the Chinese calendar, this is the Year of the Tiger and we are off to a ROARING start as far as the 2nd Annual Coed Youth Basketball Tournament is concerned. All four teams are returning with St. Anthony’s youth team defending its championship title against beefed-up teams from St. Paul’s LifeTeen, St. Monica Parish and Kapamilya Youth Dance Troupe. The opening ceremonies held last Feb 20 started with a parade of the teams followed by singing of “O Canada”, a tune that has been sung repeatedly and spontaneously during the 2010 Olympic Winter games. Thanks to the patriotic spirit emanating from Canadian athletes and non-athletes alike eh! At our opening, the Welcome and Inspirational speeches were delivered by Worthy Grand Knight Americo Silva and District Deputy Kevin Pinto, respectively. Move over John Furlong and Jacques Rogge! The opening games were tightly contested as players took to the floor and played as though these were championship games. Or was it to avenge a loss from last year? The opening day concluded with St. Anthony downing Kapamilya 52-50 and St. Monica beating St. Paul’s LifeTeen 65-61. The second games were played on Feb 27 and we had our share of controversy as coaches alleged that some teams had players over 18 years old in their line-up. A brief meeting was immediately conducted by Tony Banting (Sports Director) and Manny Tolentino (Organizing Committee Head) who reminded the respective coaches that this a tournament to promote fair play, camaredie and FUN among high school students boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 18. These coaches were also given a stern warning that any team who violates the age eligibility rule will automatically forfeit that game. Several brother knights from Council 6855 have come out to give their support - set up and take down tables, serve as official scorers and timers. Thank you all for your support and we hope to see more brother knights come and join us. The next game days are Mar 6 (3rd games) and Mar 20 (consolation and championship games).
