BIBLIOGRAPHY OF
U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY WATER-RESOURCES REPORTS, ARIZONA, 1891 TO 1965
Compiled by the Arizona District, Water Resources Division, U. S. Geological Survey
INTRODUCTION
This bibliography contains a complete listing to May 1965 of reports relating to the water resources of Arizona prepared by personnel of the U. S. Geological Survey; some of the reports cover parts of adjacent States. Discussions of the related subjects of geology, hydrology, and chemical quality of the water also are included in many of the reports.
Subsequent to about 1918 for surface water and 1939 for ground water, the reports were, for the most part, prepared by personnel assigned to the Arizona district of the Survey.
The bibliography is divided into three major parts: (1) publications of the Geological Survey; (2) open-file reports of the Geological Survey; and (3) other publications-reports prepared by Survey personnel, but published by other agencies or by professional organizations in their journals.
Publications of the Geological Survey that are still available may be purchased from the Superintendent of Documents, Government printing Office, Washington 25, D. C. Reports not available at the time of this compilation are marked with an asterisk (*). For the most part, open-file reports are available only on a loan basis or for inspection at the Arizona district office of the U. S. Geological Survey, Geology Building, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. Address mail inquiries to P.O. Box 4070, University Station, Tucson, Arizona, 85717. Inquiries as to the availability of reports listed as "other publications" must be addres sed to the professional organization or other
2
agency by which they were published. Most of these reports are available in the larger libraries, such as the library of the University of Arizona. Inquiries concerning the "water-resources reports" series of the Arizona State Land Department should be addressed to: Water Division, Arizona State Land Department, State Office Building, Phoenix, Arizona.
An index to the bibliography is included to facilitate its use. The series of annual reports that describe the ground-water conditions throughout the State are not li~ted separately in the index. From 1940 to 1955, these reports are published as U. S. Geological Survey watersupply papers entitled "Water Levels and Artesian Pressures in Wells in Southwestern States." From 1956 to the present, they are a part of the series of water-resources reports published by the Arizona State Land Department. Table 1 shows these reports by number and period of time covered.
The series of annual reports that describe the surface-water supply of drainage basins in Arizona is published as U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled "Surface-Water Supply of the United States, Colorado River Basin." Table 2 gives the numbers of these water-supply papers from 1899 through 1960. Subsequent to 1960 records of surface-water supply are available as open-file reports of the Geological Survey, Additional surface-water records are given in U. S. Geological Survey Annual Reports >:<11, *12, *13, *18, *19, >l~20,
>:<21, and *22. Water-Supply Paper *1313 contains a summary of surfacewater records through September 1950.
The series of annual reports that contains records of chemical quality. temperature of surface water, and suspended-sediment load of streams in Arizona is published as U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled' 'Quality of Surface Waters of the United States, Parts 9-14." Table 3 gives the numbers of these water-supply papers from 1941 through 1962. The series of annual reports that contains chemicalquality data for surface water used for irrigation is published as U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled "Quality of Surface Waters for Irrigation, Western United States." Table 4 gives the numbers of these water-supply papers from 1951 through 1959.
