What a great time we had at the September meeting! It
was fun to hear everyone’s license plate names. Diane and Ja-
net gave great demonstrations.
I extend a warm welcome to our new members, Marty
Culp, Penni DeFilippi, Holly Downen, Julie Riggles who joined
our guild at the Sept meeting and Shelia Fisher who has been
with us since last season. Welcome!
Now I am looking forward to October’s meeting. We’ll
continue with the sign in process and the name tag give away
(won’t forget this time). Nancy Hoskins has stepped forward
to be our greeter. Thanks, Nancy for taking that on.
Elaine Stober has lined up a wonderful program for us
to enjoy.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in October. I hope
you were able to attend the Quilters Unlimited annual
meeting on Oct 5th. And don’t forget those name tags!
Lois
Programs - Vice President…..Elaine Stober -Many thanks again to Diane Cairns who demonstrated the AccuQuilt and Janet Beyea who shared the best of applique at our September meeting. -Our October program will be a trunk show and lecture given by Diane Phillips entitled “Retreat to Creativi-ty.” Diane will showcase many of her unique quilts and also will lecture about the work she’s done spear-heading the creative end of retreats covering themes, projects, quilts and challenges. Hope to see every-one October 16th. -Signups will continue for the “Boro Coin Purse” workshop given by Susan Haftel on November 20th (See flyer at end of newsletter). You can also sign up by contacting Elaine at [email protected]. Also, as a friendly re-minder, please remember that if you sign up for a workshop and do not attend, you still owe the AQU registration fee of $20 unless you notify Elaine by the 1st of the month when the workshop is given.
…...Treasurer’s Report …. Sandra Carillo
As of 9/30/19 the balance is $14,240.82 for AQU. This balance reflects $750.00 in income and $1288.58 in expenses since 9/11/19.
There will be a reimbursement form attached to this newsletter. You can save it or print it to have on hand. If not, just catch me at a meeting for a copy. You can also email me at [email protected].
Thank you and looking forward to seeing everyone at the October meeting.
…...Education Bee …. Karen Hubachek
The Education Bee got off to a good start the second Wednesday of September with a short demo on How to Make a Tiny Fabric Gift Pouch from two 8 1/2" square pieces of fabric. Susan Kroner has offered to demonstrate How to Make Origami Pinwheel Blocks at the October Education Bee. She says if you want to follow along, bring the following: - eight identical-size squares of fabric (four inches is a good size) -- four of one print (or color) and -- four of a complementary fabric -pins - needle and thread
The scheduled demo is An Unconventional Way to make an Unconventional Tumbler Quilt, which may get pushed to another meeting, depending on time.
…...Boutique News
The Quilt Show boutique is a major source of the funds that we use to pay for programs, workshops, and
the batting for our charity quilts.
If there is enough interest, we have the opportunity to gather together on the fifth Wednesday of Octo-ber at Sleepy Hollow UMC to work on boutique items. If you are interested, please check your calendar to see if you are available on Oct. 30. At our meeting on Oct. 16, we will ask for a show of hands to see if there is sufficient interest to have a boutique workshop from 10 AM to 4 PM. If there is, we will send around a sign-up sheet so that we know whom to expect. We will also be able to send you a meeting re-minder.
If you need an idea of what to make and what is likely to sell, we received the following suggestions from the QU boutique coordinator:
Suggestions to help increase sales:
• Use current (new and nice) fabric or classic fabric. Don't use old fabric that's been in your stash for years. • Well made items. Quality and workmanship is important. • Look on Pinterest and quilting blogs to see what items are "hot" now. These will be good items to make for the Boutique. • Price the items at a good, fair and reasonable price. Price items to sell. • Don't make a ton of one kind of item. Variety of items is a good thing.
These items sold well at the 2019 show:
• Luggage tags • Tissue holders • Baby items • Small quilts • Dish towels • Placemats • Table runners • Pin cushions • Cell phone holders/wristlets (include a picture so customers will know how to use them) • Iron bags • Microwave heat pads • Cosmetic bags with plastic inserts
Word of caution, just because an item sold well last year, doesn't guarantee sales this year…
…...Round Robin Challenge Janet Beyea
Our Round Robin Challenge begins at our October meeting. Please bring one block, no larger than 12”
square, to our October meeting. You can include any fabric you would like to include and a quilt label if you
would like the people who work on your quilt to sign one.
We will then exchange the blocks at our meeting. You will have until our January meeting to make a border
around the block. We will exchange our quilts in process in January and March. We will show off the finished

We have a list of folks who are attending the retreat and will send in our final rooming list on 10/10/2019.

QU Quilt Show Challenge—QU Goes to the Zoo!
All QU members are invited to participate in next year’s quilt show challenge based on our theme, ‘QU Goes to the Zoo’. This theme is meant to express our love and amazement for the animal kingdom in all settings (natural habitats, zoos, unexpected places). Your challenge quilt should be your interpretation of our theme. Any style or method of quilting will be acceptable. Larger challenge quilts (no bigger than 90″) will be hung on individual panels as size permits and smaller challenge quilts will hang together as a collection. Actual layout will be determined after all quilts are registered. As always, if you are making a quilt using a pattern, or inspired by a quilt created by someone else, please credit the designer or maker in your quilt registration. Be creative and let your love for animals shine!!

Boro Coin Purse Workshop Supply List Boro is a traditional method of Japanese mending. Patches of fabric are sewn randomly to the sur-face of the base cloth using a simple running stitch. This mending is done quickly and does not re-quire fine sewing techniques. After we make a small patchwork piece, we will fold it, add a zipper, and make a small change purse. Students should be able to finish during the workshop. All purse materials will be supplied for a kit fee of $10.00. Kit includes Japanese fabrics, batting, lin-ing, thread, needle, zipper. Supply list. Please bring the following:
small scissors to snip
embroidery threads
large scissors for trimming fabric. You will be trimming the purse top to size, so larger, sharp scis-sors are helpful
thimble or needle puller
needle and thread for sewing seams. I use quilting thread for this step since it's strong and doesn't tangle. The supplied chenille needle and pearl cotton are not good for this step. (optional) a charm or a tassel is a cute addition to this purse.
