4 inches to Insanity

Member: Ruth Bolt

"Quilt was pre-cut kit that I received as a gift, in learning the tumbling block style I was driven to name it 4 inches in honor of the seam lengths. On this quilt making one was enough."

Animals of Alaska

Member: Ruth Bolt

"I was given this pattern days after the Zoo Challenge was issued, thus I had reason to begin sewing and this was the end result. Though I ran out of fabric on the backing and had to get creative and included another animal on the back."

Vienna President's Quilt

Member: Lesly-Claire Greenberg

"Vienna was of the few chapters that didn’t give their outgoing President a quilt. I decided that we couldn’t give our current president one without acknowledging all those that came before. I headed a committee to make a small quilt for all, but not myself. At the final luncheon, they surprised me with blocks! This was basted in 1990?"

Zoo Friends

Member: Jacqueline Lehman

"I started this quilt 8 years ago by doing the embroidered blocks. I got it pieced and it sat for a couple of years before I started quilting it. I finally started quilting it about four years ago. I didn't finish and had surgery on my right wrist. The quilt show theme for this year gave me the push I needed to finally finish this."

Mother Bear

Member: Barbara McCullough

"This was quilted with love and tears. It was to be a lap quilt for a friend with cancer. She considered herself a 'Mother Bear' and she loved polar bears. Unfortunately she did not get to use it even though I rushed to get it finished. Her cancer was too far advanced. It now hangs in my sewing room as a remembrance of her."

"I had a package of 'Tonga Treats' - Batiks 6 inches by width of fabric and wanted to get the most out of the fabric. By adding the background and filling in with some scraps, I came up with this block which finished as a queen-size."

"I have always loved the house block. This colorful version caught my eye in one of the quilting magazines. [Sorry I cannot find the magazine to credit the designer.] I added the log cabins to enlarge the quilt."

Yellow Farm House, Red Barn

Member: Judith McDonald

"Inspired by Judy Sisneros' '9-Patch Pizzazz', I found my focus fabric was too small in scale and I cut my strips too small, using a new ruler for the first time. Instead of a 'fast and easy' quilt, I used the 'slow and hard' approach. But I managed to finish it."

"This sunny grouping of flowers is the result of resin buttons catching my eye at a quilt show. A friend challenged me to incorporate black and white fabric into this colorful design. The quilt is a free-form custom design. Cotton fabrics are appliquéd, pieced, and collaged by hand and machine sewing. Embellished by hand."

Crazy Hare Day

Member: Barbara Powers

"Before I became addicted to quilting, it was counted cross stitch I was into. I has an Easter wreath that I had finished but never framed. I decided to incorporate it into a quilt I added a Dresden plate, some appliqued bows, and lots of machine embroidered bunnies ...lots...and lots. I may never want to look at a bunny again."

"I collected novelty fabrics by the 1/4 yard for several years--some from as far away as Colorado--before creating this quilt for my granddaughter. It contains 160 unique images! Lydia, her brothers, and I have fun searching for snowmen, 'Lydie-bugs,' cars, and more."

My First Quilt

Member: Barbara Rice

"In the fall of 2013 my husband gave me a set of quilting classes for my birthday. I was neither a confident nor speedy sewer but my instructor, Sharon Tindall, worked wonders. I'm still slow but have definitely caught the quilting bug! Although I see things I would do differently now, I am proud of my first effort. And I still love batiks!"
