Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day.

Mexican Independence Day is the 16th of September.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates a battle between Mexican and French forces that took place on May 5th, 1862. It is known in Mexico as “La Batalla de Puebla”.

The French invaded Mexico because the Mexican government couldn’t repay a debt that it owed to France.

The Mexican Army defeated the French Army in this battle, but the French went on to win the war and Mexico became a French colony between 1863 and 1867.

Interestingly, Cinco de Mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico itself. There is far more interest in the United States and it is used by companies that sell Mexican products and food to increase revenue.
