DAY 1– PULAU TIGAApassagefromSingaporeorThailandwillbringyouryacht to Pulau Tiga,about 30nm southof Sabah’scapital,KotaKinabalu.Theoriginalsiteforthefilmingofthefirst“Survivor”realitytelevisionprogramme,PulauTigahastwosmallresortsandasmalljetty.Theislandformedinthelate1800’sandhasaninterestingmudvolcanoatitscentre,reflectiveofthethermoactivityoftheregion.

Thebeachesarea lovelyplace to setupaBBQorsimplyrelax.AdjacenttoTigaisasmallerisland,PulauBoron.Knownas“SnakeIsland”,theislandisapurportedbreedingground for sea snakes (caution shouldbetakenwalkingonthisisland,asthereareindeedmanysnakes.Guidesareavailableon themain island forthosewhoarefeelingadventurous).Thereisalsoalovelysandspitoffthenortherntip,onceathrivingislandthatwasdestroyedinastorm,thatissurroundedbycoralreef.Itispossibletomakeanyofthesetripsinadayviahelicopter.Thuspassengerscanvisitsomeofthenaturallandwonderswhiletheyachtisinpassage.

ITINERARY

West Coast Of Sabah

DAY 2 – KOTA KINABALUPulauBangi–Borneo,Malaysia.KotaKinabalu,fondlyknownsimplyasKK,isthecapitalcityofSabah.Therearesomegoodrestaurants,barsandampleshoppingtobehadaswellasseveralbeautiful5starresortslocatedinandaroundthecapital.Therearealsosevenworld-classgolfcoursesinthevicinity,onesportingnightgolfforthosewishingtoavoidtheheatoftheafternoonsun.Therearemanyanchoragesaroundthecityandthemainmarinahasgoodfacilitiesifyouchoosetoberthhereovernight.

ThereisasmallislandcommunityonMantananiBesar(BigMantanani)withextremely friendlyvillagerswholoveaspontaneouspick-upfootballmatch.Theywillassist inpointingout thebestdivingand snorkelingspots,aswellasalertyouiftherehavebeenanyrecentsightingsofdugongs(seacows)aroundtheshores.Intheevenings,thousandsoffrigatebirdscircleintheair,abeautifulsighttobeseen.MantananiKecil (SmallMantanani) isanationalbirdsanctuaryset-uptoprotectthesegloriousseabirds.EarlyriserscancatchabeautifulsunriseoverMt.Kinabalu,whichcanbeseentoweringover themainlandandthehillsoftheCrockerRangetotheeast.

KotaKinabaluisanidealhubtoexploretheinteriorofSabah,withoptionstovisitand/orclimbMt.Kinabalu,thehighestpeak inSouthEastAsia; theMaliauBasinconservation area, known as Sabah’s LostWorld;Sandakan,a 35minute flight to Sepilok, theorang-utan rehabilitationcentre -where itmaybepossibleto arrange “privileged” visits to see the orphanedorangutanbabies up-close; andalso Sukau, alongtheKinabatanganwhich is rich inwildlife, includingproboscismonkeyandpigmyjungleelephants.

DAY 3 – TENKU ABDUL RAHMAN MARINE PARKMaliau Basin – Borneo,Malaysia. The islandsof theTenkuAbdulRahmanMarineParkareagreatcruisinggroundjustoffthecoastofthecapitalcity.Madeupof5islands:Mamutik,Manukan,Sulug,SapiandGaya,theparkprovidesmanyprivatecoves,secludedsnorkelinganddivingspotsandwonderfulbays.

Police Bay on the north-side ofGaya Island, is anexcellentsecludedspotoutofviewofthecity lights.Thesteepjungleslopesarehometomanyindigenousspecies,andoftenyouwillseefamiliesofmonkeys,wildboarandgiantmonitor lizardsroamingthebeachintheearlymorningorlateafternoon.

DAY 4 – PULAU MANGALUMPulauMangalumlies30nmnorthwestofKotaKinabaluandoffersbeautifulbeachesandsnorkeling.LocallorebelievesthatthegreatexplorerMagellanandhisfleetstoppedby this island (hence the island’sname)onhiswaytopayhomagetotheSultanofBrunei.Agiantgalleonanchor,excavatedoff its shores, restsat theSabahMuseuminKotaKinabalutoprovethecase.ThelocalsfavorthisareaforfishingandtothesouthwestistheSaracenbank,whosedeepwatersonItswesternsideareastopoverformanypelagicspecies.

DAY 5 – PULAU MANTANANI ISLAND GROUPOrgangutansanctuaryinSandakan–Borneo,Malaysia.About 65nmnorthof KotaKinabaluare the IslandsofMantanani,atropicalhavenswithextensivewhitesandybeachesandscatteredreefs.

DAY 6 – PULAU KULAMBUMabulBeach,SipadanBorneo,Malaysia.JustsouthofthenortherntipofBorneoliestheidyllicislandofPulauKulambu,attached to themainlandbya sand spit,formingtwosmallbaysoneitherside.Thisareaisblessedwithmilesofwhitesandybeachesandcovesaswellasbeautifulcoconutplantationsandhillsforexploring.ThelandaroundPulauKulambuisbeingdevelopedintoahigh-endluxuryvillacommunityknownastheKudatRiviera,thatwillfeaturespectaculartropicalhomes.

SempangMegayau,the“TipofBorneo”fourmilesnorth,hasbeenconverted intoapublicparkand featuresadramaticcliff linedareamarkingthisgeographicalpoint.KudatishometotheRunguspeopleofSabah,famousfortheirweaving,beadworkandgong-making.ThereisaRungusLonghouse,thetraditionalcommunalhomeofthetribe,onthebeachatKulambuaswellasseveralnearbyvillagesthatmaybevisited,offeringaglimpseintotherichculturalheritageofSabah.

ThetownofKudat,hasasmallmarinaandan18-holegolfcourse.Fishingisthemainstayoftheeconomyhere,soitisagreatplacetotrythelocalseafood.

DAY 7 – PULAU BANGI AND PULAU BAMBANGUNANLocatedoff thecoast of Kudat, these islands offerexcellentcruisinganddiving.Dottedwithwhitesandybeachesandcovesfringedwithnativecoconutandbanana trees, hours canbe spentwandering thecoastline.Thereareseveralstilt-housecommunitiesthatcanbevisitedandthepeoplearegenerallyfriendlyandwelcoming.Thereareexcellentwreckdivingspotsintheareaandaguideshouldbehiredtoexploresomeoftheserarelyvisitedsites.Fishingisplentifulandalsoanoptioninthisarea.
