Dear Family and Friends,
We are blessed in our OLSH community to have an abundance of inspiring moments to
celebrate. Our Year 12 students have had a fantastic start to their final year at the
College. They returned to Hartzer Campus for their Year 12 Retreat and they
wonderfully celebrated their Year 12 Formal. On both occasions they displayed
impressive maturity, great elegance and a real sense of what it means to be a true
OLSH girl.
Hospitality and welcome is very much at the heart of our spirit here at OLSH College. So
often many of our girls are involved with reaching out and welcoming people to our
community. Thank you to the enthusiastic Student Ambassadors who cared so
beautifully for visiting families on tours on Open Morning this week. The OLSH pride
shines through at these events and their authentic interaction with families certainly lets
everyone know that OLSH College is the place to be.
‘Proud to be OLSH’ encapsulates well the superb start that we have had to 2017. Each
of us are privileged to be part of the great journey of education. Indeed with one voice
we could all say:
Are not our hearts burning within us…Luke 24:32
Always united in our shared OLSH Spirit.
Anne O’Loughlin
Principal
May you always be united forming only one heart.

The girls were recognised for their wonderful achievements in front of the OLSH
community and the Dux of the College, Gabrielle O’Hagan, spoke of expectations, goals
and learning from mistakes. The wonderful dance performances were also a highlight of
the morning.

The Year 12 Retreat was an extremely rewarding and fulfilling experience for us and the
whole year level. Returning to Hartzer Park for three days reminded us of the memories
made in Year 9. Visiting again gave us the opportunity to remember the independence
we gained from the program. We spent time reflecting on who God is for us and the
place God has our lives.
Our trip began with a rush of exhilaration and excitement. We were ready to strengthen
our relationships with our peers and teachers. We also wanted to enjoy some time
away from the demands of academic life, as we slowed down to try to listen more
deeply to our own hearts.
It was humbling to have the chance to be able to focus on ourselves. Not as a student, a
daughter, a netball team member or all the other roles we have our daily lives. Our time
in the natural environment called for self reflection and deep thought about our faith and
spirituality. The group activities were fun and thought provoking, allowing us to spend
special time with our peers. Ultimately, it was a surreal experience that we enjoyed and
appreciated. It will be remember by us all as an unforgettable retreat.

What a wonderful and inspiring way that our Student Leaders introduced their theme for
the year. Too often fear of failure and fear of judgement can hold us back in achieving
our best.
This year our Student Leaders have challenged each one of us to “know” and
understand our own fears, to be brave and to be courageous in all that we do. This year
is a year for all of us to know our greatness and to face all that holds us back. Their
school dance to the song “The eye of the tiger” – “Just a woman and her will to survive”
filled the Hall on Wednesday during our Assembly. A reminder, that as strong young
OLSH women, we “can do anything”.
Parents are advised that the College doors do not open prior to 7.45am. Unless
students are under the direct supervision of a staff member for a before school activity,
parents are encouraged to drop their daughter/s off for school after this time. We thank
you for your support with this.
Year 7 parents are reminded that Immunisations for Year 7s will take place on Thursday
March 2 at the College. Please contact Ms Cheryl Bullen or Ms Dina Oro if you have any
queries.

Each student’s school planner is not only a diary, but also contains a range of resources
that focus on building healthy and positive and resilient students. This week’s newsletter
article from the Learning Curve Planner focuses on family relationships. Try doing the
VIA character strengths survey which is free, to determine the key signature strengths of
each family member.

We pray for the repose of the souls of:
George Zerbinos, Grandfather of Leia Zerbinos, Year 10
Pierre Laville, Grandfather of Capucine, Year 11
and Caroline Laville, Year 7
May Our Lady of the Sacred Heart hold them gently in her
care and may their souls rest in peace.

On 15 February, Year 7 travelled to Lake Dewar for their
Year 7 Camp.
Everyone was excited and couldn’t wait to organise their
cabins and begin the many adventurous activities.
Throughout the course of the three days the girls
participated in canoeing, kayaking and jetty jump, stand up
paddle boarding, flying fox, geocaching, raft building, kick
bike triple challenge and adventure tunnelling.
The evening activities included a Liturgy and a quiz and the
following night each group performed their Homeroom item.
Well done to 7 Red who won this year with their creative
dance and colourful costumes.
It was a wonderful camp where memories were created
and many new friendships were made.

We were delighted to welcome many families to the College for the first Open Morning
for the year on February 21.
Visitors were greeted by our Student Ambassadors and
the presentation was held in the Theatrette. The Student
Leaders welcomed visitors and led the prayer and
welcome to country. The Principal, Anne O’Loughlin,
addressed families and outlined the Our Lady of the
Sacred Heart tradition and all of the wonderful
opportunities offered to OLSH College girls, both
academic and co-curricular. Year 8 parent Honi Cervi
(pictured right, below) shared her many positive
experiences during her family’s time at the College,
including a seamless transition from primary to secondary
school.
Visitors were taken on a school tour, capably led by the
Student Ambassadors, and many remarked afterwards
how impressed they were with the students and how
proud they were of their College. Key staff met the families
during morning tea and we look forward to welcoming
many of them into the OLSH community in the future.

Tuesday February 21….What a beautiful day it was to be swimming, riding and running
at Eastern Beach in Geelong.
A team of twenty OLSH College students competed against triathletes from seven other
schools in the 200 metre swim, 4.6km ride and 2km run. For some competitors it was an
achievement to have completed the event after overcoming challenges, for others it was
an opportunity to achieve a Personal Best time, and for three OLSH students it was a
chance to claim a hard earned medal for a top ten placing!
Congratulations to all students for their great efforts at training
and on the day.

My name is Abby Freney and I am the Sports Captain for 2017.
My interest in sport began at a very young age. Being in a family
who also loves sport has made it easy for me to be as involved as
I am. Netball is my number one favourite sport and has been since
I was eight years old. It takes up most of my time, but in between I
get involved in every possible team I can here at OLSH College.
Since Year 7 I have done nearly every sport offered every single
year. I am the type of person who loves to compete in a team or
just to represent the College in doing something I love.
Sport is such an enjoyable thing to be part of, and I hope as Sports Captain this year I
can introduce some initiatives that will make girls want to participate and take up more
opportunities given to them. Some goals I have for this year are: to introduce House
mascots to increase the competiveness between Houses, have more teachers’ races at
both athletics and swimming carnivals and hold more training sessions for SCSA days
so younger year levels get a feel for what to expect on the day. I would also like to
introduce some new awards for the Sports Awards night at the end of the year and of
course to be as motivational as I can as Sports Captain and leave my mark on the future
of OLSH sport.
Take a great action shot on your phone
and email it to [email protected] to win an awesome prize!
Remember not to publish anything online (social media) etc
You can only submit one photo – please include a title, your name and homeroom.
Good luck!

What a wonderful start to their final year the Class of 2017 have had and one of the
highlights has been the Year 12 Formal which was held on the evening of 17 February.
The many hours devoted to dress and shoe selection, hairstyle and make up was well
worth it as the girls arrived at the Brighton International looking elegant and stylish. They
were joined by partners and staff who were ready to celebrate this very special occasion
together. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal which was followed by the announcement of
the much coveted awards decided by the students, including Best Dressed. Then music
began and the DJ played many of the favourites to keep guests dancing all night long.
The Year 12 Formal really was a fantastic night and the girls will remember it forever.

Late last year, Mary (Timbrell) Beverley, who lives in Queensland, contacted Alumnae
Officer, Shane O’Neil, about the possibility of a visit to the College.
Mary and husband Norm were going to be in Melbourne for just one day before they
boarded the Queen Mary II for a cruise up the eastern seaboard.
Luckily that day happened to coincide with one of the College’s Open Mornings so Mary
was able to hear a presentation by Principal, Anne O’Loughlin, and to join in a tour with
lots of excited prospective students and their parents.
When Mary started at OLSH in 1950, she was one of the first to wear the brown and
gold uniform, replacing the previous navy and cream version. She left in 1954 when her
family moved interstate and had not been back to the
College in 67 years.
She was amazed at how big OLSH has become and
Mary recognised the art rooms as they were original
classrooms. Mary also found a familiar face among
the photos of past Principals when she saw Mother
Giovanni, Principal from 1944 - 1956.
Mary said: “It was an eye opener for me to see all
the changes to OLSH over the years. Hearing the
presentations, by the girls, the Principal and then a
Year 8 student's mother, I felt very proud to have
been a past pupil of this great school.”
