In their first track meet on Tuesday, March 15, the male Vikings scored a second placement, while the Lady Vikings secured third in their respective competitions. The Vikings practice from 4:00 to 5:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays,Thursdays, and occasionally on Fridays. T h i s year’s North Forsyth track coach, Michael Smith states, “In individual events, we did fantastic. The boys and girls placed first in 4 events each. We also had several second-place finishes as well. This is what I was hoping for but didn’t know what to expect. The girls and boys did multiple events, and they just ran their hearts out.” The first place winners for the girls were: Nakienah Payne in shot put in discus, Ines Earl in the 300m hurdles, and Amanda Szjka in the 800m. Senior De’ron Fulton led the boys by winning the 100m dash in a season best of 11.07 and placed second in the 200m dash. Freshman Steve Stowe won the 800m dash, while senior Tyler Sapp took second place in the 400m. The so far successful Vikings competed in the “Scott Brent” Invitational March 18-19 at Mt. The girls welcomed a new coach, Miss Eidson, a new English teacher at North Forsyth, who stated, “I am excited to be a part of the softball program at North. I am looking forward to a great season.” The JV Lady Vikings were excited for their first game against the North Surry Greyhounds. In the first inning, with an error committed by the third baseman, freshman Kenadi Burford reached first base. Another freshman, Annie Cline, hit into a double play to end the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning, freshmen starting pitcher Tori Galyean caused the first batter to ground out back to the mound. Two back to back singles and a double loaded the bases and was the first test for the young team. Tori made the next batter ground out to short stop to make it two outs. Even though the girls faced a tough third out, Galyean caused a pop up in the infield to end the inning. The hard defense was no match, however, to the Greyhounds’ offense, and the JV team lost 16-0. After a two and a half hour varsity game, the Junior Varsity Lady Vikings took the batter’s box on March 3 against the South Stokes Sauras. After a quick three and out, the Vikings were put on the field for defense. The Vikings got two quick outs before a lighting shortage ended the game at 10-0 in favor of the Sauras. On March 15, in a thrilling come from behind fashion, the JV ladies earned their first win against Mt. Tabor 9-8. The sophomore players include Donnea Fontaine, Dannielle Hawks, Elisha Kollock, Daniela Sostaita, and Montufar Vianey. Finally is junior Meredith Kreeger. These girls pull together during every practice to ensure that they will win a game. Glendy Perales had a few words about the beginning of the season. “So far we have done alright. The rest of the team is really good, and we work well together. On March fifteenth we played our first game against Parkland, and we tied with the score being 1-1. This started our season with an 0-0-1. Although the team has to work on communication, we get along really well, and I think that the rest of the season will go very well.” Coach Lopez also had some inspiring words to say about the team. “These girls are really exciting to watch. With a little improvement they are going to do great. They are the fantastic future of the varsity team.” Although the season just began, the girls are ready to improve on their playing and are ready to dominate every game.
