(3/31/15) Last week: Racism exists everywhere. Not just Fort Lauderdale. Whether its a disgusting video or racist texts. What is additionally disturbing is that these officers routinely patrolled minority areas. The action by Fort Lauderdale was swift and appropriate. But the more difficult task for this and perhaps other departments is to assess standards of policing to determine whether it differs by location. I have been the subject of anti-semitism on numerous occasions. Yet that does not rise to the level of overt racism by color. Our nation grows more diverse each day. We all need to just get along.

(4/8/15) The Anti-Defamation League issued their annual report indicating a rise in Anti-Semitic activity in Florida. South Florida led the way. The hatred ranged from spray painting swastikas on Temple walls spelling Jew on cars to hacking my neighborhood's temple website. These activities apparently have been borne out of a rise in Middle East tensions. The conflict is an excuse to express and act on hate. If we really are trying be a community, then perhaps we need a forum. One that talks and argues, but is united at the dinner table we call south Florida.

(3/16/15) This has been a difficult week in the world of human relations. When President Obama was elected, we believed that we were in a post racial era. Not true. Whether its the yelling of "liar" during the state of Union, or the fraternity in Oklahoma singing a racial hatred song, clearly we have miles to go on the road to tolerance. Additionally, the disrespect to the President and his officers exemplified by the 47 Republican senators sending an inappropriate letter to one of Americas enemies was appalling. The continuation of personal destruction must stop. America is better than that.

Our Chairman Mitch Ceasar has been chosen as a member of the Sun Sentinel  Top 100 influential leaders in South Florida. You will be able to locate his weekly comments in the opinion section of the Sun Sentinel every Sunday.

TED CRUZ F IRST TO BOARD THE GOP CLOWN

C ARRemember the foolish waste of time and taxpayer money from Ted Cruz, the embarrassment from Texas, as he filibustered the United States Senate with his rendition of a Dr. Seuss tale of green eggs and ham?

In rebuttal to his reading it seems appropriate to respond in kind.

A Sham I am I am Ted Cruz A Sham I am

That Sham I am That Sham I am I do not care that Sham I am

Do you like my bull and flare

I do not care that Sham I am I do not like facts and knowledge

Would you like me to be President Here or there?

I would not like to think or know I would not like that not at all I do not like facts and knowledge I do not like them I am Ted Cruz Sham I am

Would you want me in the White House? Do you want me without knowledge or facts

I do not like facts or knowledge in the White House I do not like them then or now I do not like them not at all

I do not like facts or knowledge

I do not like them Sham I am

Would you let me in your house? Can you imagine me in the White House Sham I am

Would you, could you trust me at all Would you, could you take the risk?

I would not, could not make any sense Not in a house, Not in your White House Sham I am

I would not, could not believe in facts I do not like them not at all I would not believe in science I do not like it not at all I do not like them, Sham I am I am Ted Cruz

A plane, A plane A plane, A plane Could you see me in Air Force One?

I do not like facts and knowledge I do not like them Sham I am I am Ted Cruz

Could you, would you See me in the White House? You would not, should not Like what I’d do there!

Listen to facts? I will not, will not, not at all Believe in knowledge? I will not, will not, not at all Respect your beliefs? I will not, will not, not at all Protect the environment? I will not, will not, not at all Save Social Security? I will not, will not, not at all Protect Medicare and Medicaid? I will not, will not, not at all Protect a woman’s right to choose? You must be kidding: I will not, will not, not at all

Thank you! I am Ted Cruz

With most sincere apologies to Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss.)

BULLETIN BOARD

This is what Republicans oppose.

WHY???

Republicans aren’t ashamed or embarrassed. They are so in love with their big ideas to remake America, they introduced them twice. Once in the House, again in the Senate. Here are some highlights of the GOP plan for America: • 11 million families, seniors and children will lose food stamps.  • 35,000 children will not get Head Start. • 133,000 fewer poor families will get housing assistance. • 2 million fewer workers will receive job training and employment services. • $1.2 billion will be cut from education. That could fund 4,500 schools and

17,000 teachers. Seniors aren’t exempt from the devastating cuts. The House GOP plan turns Medicare into a "premium support" model that essentially replaces the guarantee of quality healthcare for seniors with a system of coupons. They slash services for seniors, including 500,000 fewer rides to doctors and grocery stores.

Democratic Senator Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader will retire from the Senate in 2016.

R.I.P. Andrew Markoff

Marco Rubio announced his intention to run for President of the United States. In doing so he has disclosed his intention to leave public service. Congratulations Marco, by leaving the Senate you have finally done something good for Florida!

Last  Friday  Andrew  Stephen  Markoff  died  at  his  home  in  Hallandale  Beach,  FL,  at  age  48.  Tonight  Thursday  April  16th  at  Ingalls  Park  which  is  located  at  the  corner  of  SW  8th  Avenue  and  SW  1st  Street  we  will  be  holding  a  celebraJon  of  life.    Andrew  “Andy”  loving  called  by  his  family,  survived  by  parents,  Carole  and  EllioO  Markoff,  his  brothers,  Robert  Markoff  and  John  Markoff  and  his  sister  Lauren  Corwin. Andrew  was  involved  in  so  many  ways,  giving  of  his  Jme  to  others  in  the  city  he  never  ask  for  help  for  himself.  The  true  meeJng  of  Tzedaka  (Charity).    He  was  so  deeply  caring  for  his  neighbors.    He  was  firmly  commiOed  to  community  jusJce  and  equality.  His  approach  was  oXen  misunderstood  but  I  can  aOest  to  the  fact  it  came  not  for  notoriety,  ego  or  hatred  but  from  extreme  intelligence  and  goodness.      He  oXen  shared  with  me  his  frustraJon  over  why  individuals  were  so  self-‐serving  and  not  caring  about  our  community  or  those  that  are  in  need  of  help. Andrew  volunteered  in  so  many  ways;  on  the  Police  Advisory  Board,  Charter  Review,  Palms  Community  AcJon  CoaliJon,  Kiwanis,  DemocraJc  CommiOees,  and  One  Hallandale.  He  volunteered  for  animal  rescue  and  taught  conversaJonal  English  at  our  local  library.  I  am  sure  there  is  more  to  add  to  this  list  but  it  shows  how  caring  Andrew  was. We  were  waiJng  to  hear  back  from  Andrew’s  parents  who  reside  in  California  about  when  they  would  be  here  in  Florida.    This  past  Monday  I  received  a  call  that  his  brother  Mark  would  be  coming  in  to  represent  the  family  and  finalize  Andrews’s  affairs  here  in  Hallandale  Beach.  He  agreed  that  a  quite  celebraJon  of  life  would  be  most  appropriate.  DonaJons  can  be  made  in  his  name  to  Jonah's  Loving  Heart  Rescue,  269  S.  Beverly  Drive,  Beverly  Hills,  CA  90212 I  am  sure  many  of  you  that  worked  with  Andrew  who  are  just  finding  out  this  sad  news  are  also  at  the  same  point  of  disbelief,  anger  and  sadness  I  was.  There  are  no  explanaJons  in  life.  Only  God  knows  what  our  future  will  bring.  I  will  truly  miss  Andrews’s  smart  advice  and  his  friendship.  I  know  the  many  people  and  neighbors  that  knew  of  Andrews’s  love  of  community  will  share  in  this  senJment.  I  am  happy  God  gave  me  a  chance  to  spend  some  Jme  with  Andrew,  no  maOer  how  short,  on  his  path.  He  has  made  a  difference  in  many  lives  and  I  hope  we  all  use  his  example  moving  forward  on  what  Tzedaka  means.

TOP REASONS TO OPPOSE THE HOUSE REPUBLICAN “WORK HARDER, GET LESS” BUDGET

Makes Life Harder for Americans Today

• Hurts families by green-lighting tax increases for the middle class to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires• Raises taxes on American workers and families• Hurts students by cutting college aid• Takes away health insurance from more than 16 million people• Hurts veterans by cutting funding below President’s request• Hurts current retirees• Hurts future retirees by ending the Medicare guarantee• lock-grants nutrition assistance and Medicaid while imposing destructive cuts in both

Disinvests in the Future

• Guts strategic investments• Abandons the nation’s crumbling infrastructure• Rejects immigration reform

Includes Fast-Track Procedures to Push Through Harmful Policies

• Reconciliation - Includes procedures that expedite consideration of legislation to repeal the ACA, as well as make it easier to enact tax breaks for the wealthy and to cut spending in many areas.• Social Security - Calls for a fast-track process for Congress to pass Social Security reform. This process could be used by Republicans to force passage of Social Security privatization or other benefit cuts.

Builds Phony Claim of “Balance” on Huge Gimmicks

• Counts Affordable Care Act (ACA) savings that the budget claims to repeal• Cooks the books using dynamic scoring• Uses dishonest accounting of expiring tax provisions• Abuses the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) Budget
