Hello Holly Tree Members, Spring has arrived and so have warmer temperatures. How exciting April is with the Final Four, The Masters, and Easter just to name a few. What a great time of year that is upon us. We have the traditional Masters Dinner on April 5 with a golf event before the dinner. The Men’s Member/Member is held during this month and it has a great format. Call the golf shop for details and to sign up. Food and Beverage will have the Easter Brunch as the main stay for activities and we will have an Easter egg hunt following brunch with a special guest. This event fills up fast so call the grill and make your reservations. Thank you to the 100 members that came to the “Grand Wine Tasting” last month. We will continue to look at special opportunities for you to visit the club. Don’t forget we will have the monthly pasta night for you to attend. Tennis leagues are in full swing and the courts are in great shape. Take advantage of your facility and come out to play. Also, your tennis pros are at the ready to help you get better. Call Jonathon or Toby for a lesson and surprise your friends on the court with your play. The green’s staff is hard at work preparing your course daily. They have done a ton of tree work for the Turfgrass, some golf car path work, and laid sod on a huge area left of number 12. As the grass greens we will start mowing fairways and rough and continue the bunker work that started over the winter. Also, thank you to the members for repairing ballmarks and putting sand in the divots. Every little bit goes a long way in caring for your course. Finally, membership has three options for joining. If you have anyone that might be interested, give us a call so we can show them the benefits of Holly Tree. See you at the club! Hello Holly Tree Members,

It is April in South Carolina. Does it get any better than right now? Gamecocks in the Final Four, some little golf tournament in Augusta you might of heard of, and the weather is

perfect. If you have not dusted those clubs off from our very mild winter now is the time! Sign-Ups for the Men’s Spring Member-Member is currently in the Golf Shop. There will be information on the big Member-Guest June 1st-3rd coming out in late April so be on the lookout for that.

The golf shop is currently fully stocked. We have the new Callaway Chrome Soft X golf ball, Turtleson Page & Tuttle & FJ shirts, Leather weekend bags & wallets from Tica. Also coming soon blankets and throws with both the Holly Tree HT Logo and Script Logo. Please if you are looking or currently need something that we don’t have in stock please ask so that we can special order it for you.

The Golf Course greens are healing nicely from the aerification and will be perfect just as the month of April opens. Please remember to fix ball marks, fill your divots and rake bunkers after play. This will ensure the group playing behind you will have good course conditions to play from. Just a reminder the area between holes #11 &18 is now a lateral hazard. Please be aware of this when playing. I hope to see everyone soon with their clubs in tow.

GROUNDS NEWS

Page 6

Hello Holly Tree Members,

April showers brings May flowers, or at least that’s how the adage goes. The trend of rain and showers that we’ve experienced through March will hopefully continue into April and May. While we’ve been fortunate and not received huge quantities of rain every little bit helps with the drought we’ve been experiencing over the past year. Along with the rain, spring like temperatures have really begun to cause the Bermudagrass to green up and emerge from dormancy, and as the transition progresses and the growth of the Bermudagrass warrants mowing the golf course, our staff will begin easing into our warm season maintenance routine.

The aerification we performed on the greens at the end of February has slowly healed. The cold snap we had in the middle of March halted the healing that had taken place up to that point, however once soil temperatures began to recover and rise after the cold snap, the greens continued to heal. As we move into April we’re going to be performing the usual springtime maintenance practices on the greens such as light verticutting and light topdressing as often as possible to help improve the greens. While verticutting may be limited to only once or twice due to the length of time it takes to heal and recover, our goal is to perform light topdressing on an every other week to every third week basis. There are many benefits to light topdressing such as improving smoothness, diluting thatch, and increasing firmness, but the most important benefit for our greens is the improved texture and growth habitation that occurs.

In addition to our springtime maintenance practices on greens, we will also begin our warm season maintenance programs. As I mentioned in the first paragraph, we’ll begin mowing the course as the emergence of the Bermudagrass dictates, and heights of cut will slowly be lowered on tees, fairways, and approaches as the growth of the Bermudagrass becomes more vigorous. As in previous years, our heights of cut for the golf course will remain the same or be very close to where they were previously. For example, the rough height will remain at one and one-half inch (1.50”), but heights of cut for the short mow areas will be predicated on factors such as fertility, water, and the overall health of these areas. Because of the drought we experienced this past fall as the Bermudagrass was going into dormancy, many of the short mow areas may emerge weaker than in previous years, and because of this we don’t want to cause any unnecessary stress through the spring. Furthermore, we recently applied our spring fertilizer application on the golf course (Monday, March 27) which will help push the Bermudagrass and increase the health as the weather warms and we continue to receive rainfall. We will be applying this fertilizer around the greens on the course over the first week of April and applying a similar fertilizer around the practice areas.

To finish, April is the start of our busy season, and while our staff won’t be taking on any projects such as the one we recently completed on #12, our focus shifts to the health of the greens and preparing them for the upcoming summer and maintaining the course. Have a great month and keep it in the short grass!
