Dear Member,

e bright sunny days of summer are here. It’s a great time for teenagers to pause, relax and renew their spirits. roughout the school year there is so much of rushing around, academic pressure and the ever so busy lifestyle that robs children of the many experiences that are necessary for an all-round-development. Stay active and healthy by indulging in swimming, jogging, playing tennis, basketball and football – many of which you can do right here at e Club!

If you are already feeling the heat, retreat to e Club’s Antara spa for a relaxing and re-mineralising massage and body wrap or head to Jean-Claude Biguine at e Club to try out their pain-free waxing services.

e Club is also a great setting for your milestone events and goes one step further by hosting Celebrations 2016, a comprehensive networking event for all your event planning requirements.

Last but not the least, the Waterside Café has revamped its menu and its pricing to align with your summer needs – refreshing salads, light mezze platters, delicious seafood and spicy Indian dishes, giving you more than one reason to visit the luxurious connes of e Club.

We hope to see you more often at e Club this summer.

MY STORY

12-year-old Kiara Roy shares her story of how she set up the first Little Free Library in Mumbai.

LOVE OF BOOKS!

FOR THE

I rst read about the Little Free Library in Oprah (Winfrey) magazine and got inspired to start a Mumbai chapter. I thought that

there is no such initiative in Mumbai and my neighbourhood could benet from one. I really liked the idea of sharing books with the neighbourhood as it means that there are more books to read! Nowadays not many children like to

read. is mini library is great way to promote reading books. Reading helps to increase your vocabulary as well as your knowledge. It’s also a source of entertainment.

So I took my idea to my mother, who helped me to register the rst one in Mumbai, on the website www.littlefreelibrary.org. It also put us on the map, so that if anyone is looking for such

initiatives, they will be able to locate us.

e Little Free Library is characterised by a wooden house that stores all the books. I looked through several library structures and designs to get an idea of how I want my Little Free Library to look like. We got a carpenter to craft it out of wood. An artist who loved the idea of a free library decided to paint the wooden library – free of cost. And nally, I launched my venture on 15th March, 2015.

How it works is that we ask everyone in our neighbourhood to donate books that can be circulated. We have books for adults as well as children. If a person is looking for a particular genre, we can ask around and try and get it for that person.

I personally like mystery and adventure books though my current favourite book is e Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. One of the biggest achievements for me is that a lot of kids from the slum across the road come here to borrow books which they otherwise wouldn’t have access to.

I would like more people in Mumbai to start their own Little Free Libraries so that every neighbourhood in Mumbai has one. I would also like young children my age to spend less time on their phones and gadgets and discover the world of reading.

Your image can play a crucial role in your personal and professional success, says The Club member and Founder of The Image Classroom, Swarnali Dasgupta during a talk she conducted at The Club on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

MATTERSIMAGE

I come from a humble, quaint little town near Kolkata. My father was an eminent doctor, who taught us the importance of education and

that wisdom only comes with knowledge. My master’s degree and doctorate in Human Physiology, post doctoral work in Molecular Biology and subsequent work in scientic research gives me an added edge in my current profession as an Image Consultant and Personal Brand Advisor. When we moved to Mumbai from Kolkata, we became members of e Club. We have so many fond memories here. Fifteen years back when my daughter was just three years old, she made e Club her second home. Soon after our stint in Mumbai, our family of three moved abroad. is is when my journey of exploring cultures

and imbibing the unique essence of these cultures began. We lived quite the nomadic life! We lived in UK, USA, Singapore and Australia. In 2012, we returned to Mumbai. I decided that I wanted to do something on my own and after a bit of soul-searching, I found my calling in helping people through image management.

With my diverse background, I understand the ‘science’ behind the ‘art’ of looking good and use this to develop my client’s image. My aim is to connect my clients with their inner self and oer holistic development to enhance their image and in turn, their condence.

A person’s appearance is much deeper than supercial gloss. Each person has a natural tendency to attract a specic style that makes up their personality. With

my skills and experience, I assist people to recognise, accept and develop their personality.

I work with corporate organisations as well as oer one-to-one sessions. I have also conducted workshops with tailor-made modules that include lifestyle evaluation, body shape assessment, colour suitability, wardrobe analysis, communication and personal grooming and personal branding. I understand the client’s background and their needs and work around it to provide customised solutions.

I strongly believe that in today’s day and age of globalisation and the emergence of multinational companies, one needs to be ‘globally ready’ and your image can play a crucial role in your personal and professional success.

MY STORY

COVER STORY

Make the most of the summer sunshine by spending time outdoors – hang out with your friends, take up a sport or just relax at The Club. It’s not only a great way to spend the holidays, but will also keep you physically active and healthy.

Text by Sarina Menezes

Summer is the perfect season to spend your time outdoors learning a new sport or mastering new techniques.

Nowhere in the suburbs of Mumbai, will you nd an expanse of 8.2 acres of land where greenery and outdoor facilities beckon you to get physically active. And for the children who have just nished with school, summer holidays spent at e Club is the best.

e Club has always been a place for people of all age groups and is especially welcoming to children and teenagers, considering there is no place for them to really hang out with their friends and stay safe – whether it is jumping on the trampoline, dining at our restaurants,

swimming or just spending time on the main lawns.

Summer is also a great time for teenagers to pause, relax and renew their spirits. roughout the school year there is so much of rushing around and academic pressure which robs children of the many experiences that are necessary for an all- round-development.

Research has proved that young people who are more active and spend time outdoors are happier, healthier and are better at socialising than teens who watch television at home. In a city like ours, which lacks open spaces and playgrounds, teens may nd it hard to be physically active.

Why physical activity is important for pre-teen and teenage children?Being active is an important part of your child’s daily routine. Little or no physical activity can put your child at the risk of being overweight or obese, developing high blood pressure, anxiety, depression and type-II diabetes.

Being active every day can help: Improve heart health and tnessDevelop strong muscles, bones and

good postureMaintain a healthy weightImprove concentration and memoryIncrease self-condenceReduce stressImprove sleep

TIMESUMMER

APRIL-MAY-JUNE 2016 9

One of the great benets of playing outdoors is that the sun is the best source of Vitamin D, which is important for healthy bones.

It is recommended that children aged 5-18 years should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

Moderate activities generally make your child ‘hu and pu’ a little. ese include brisk walking, dancing, cycling and recreational swimming. Vigorous activities increase your child’s heart rate and may make him/her breathless. Vigorous activities include basketball, soccer, squash, tennis, hockey, swimming and football.

For many young people, this physical activity doesn’t just happen – it needs to be planned. One can also spread the 60 minutes of daily physical activity over the day through a range of activities.

SCHOOL SPORTS ISN’T ALWAYS ENOUGH Most schools in Mumbai lack open spaces and those that promise outdoor activities need to be questioned on how much is actual physical activity. You might think your child will get all the physical activity he/she needs in the physical education (PE) class or from running around at lunchtime. Unfortunately, this might not happen.

In PE classes, students spend only one-third of their time being moderately to vigorously active – the rest of the time is spent learning about sports, skills, safety, exercise and the human body. And in their lunch break, children spend their time socialising and eating.

CHILDREN WHO DON’T LIKE PHYSICAL ACTIVITYNot all young people are keen on physical activity. ere are a few things you could try to get him/her to be physically active: Include activities that your child can

do close to home and for low or no cost – for example, walking to the shop or going for a bike ride.

Look for simple, non-competitive activities that allow your child to socialise in a positive way. ese can help her/him feel good about exercising rather than feeling pressured to be the best.

ink about group activities like dancing, trekking, water polo, yoga, karate and skating.

THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR ACADEMIC PRESSURE

ROBS CHILDREN OF THE MANY EXPERIENCES THAT

ARE NECESSARY FOR AN ALL- ROUND-DEVELOPMENT.

Your child could also look for opportunities such as umpiring, volunteering, supporting teams or coaching younger children.

A lot of these activities are available and possible at e Club and can be organised by our team, on request. It’s heartening to see more and more young adults spending time, bonding with their friends and doing the things they love at the place they can call their own – e Club, Mumbai. And for those who don’t spend enough time outdoors, summer is a great time to fall in love with e Club.

It’s not the most glamorous question, but it’s one that inevitably comes up often: To wax or not to wax? e

folks at Jean-Claude Biguine understand your pain. eir Happy Waxing rituals have been created to provide you with the highest standard of comfort and hygiene in professional, luxurious surroundings. Jean-Claude Biguine oers the very distinguished range of Perron Rigot Waxes. is revolutionary wax, at its low temperature, is exible and makes waxing a comfortable experience for the client. In addition, Cirépil oers waxing accessories and an eective line of pre- and post-treatment products for a complete waxing system.

e therapists at JCB are trained and certied at Perron Rigot, France. e salon and spa oers two kinds of waxes: Stripless Wax (recommended for sensitive areas like underarms and bikini line) and Strip Wax. Both waxes ensure a pain-free ritual with shiny, smooth skin at the end.

BEKAL

Our member Susir Kumar shares his wonderful experience with family and friends at Vivanta by Taj Bekal, Kerala.

AN ENCHANTINGRETREAT

We were three families each with two kids holidaying together in Mangalore and were planning our next destination. We then decided to go to Vivanta by Taj Bekal, Kerala which is

just a two-hour drive from Mangalore. I had been to Vivanta, Bekal before but that was just for the day. is time round, we planned to spend a good 2 nights, 3 days at Bekal.

e journey from Mangalore to Bekal was very smooth and peaceful. And the warm welcome by the team on arrival just set the pace for us. We knew we had made the right decision. at’s what I loved the most about the sta – they were always smiling and eager to help and assist their guests. We booked four villas with a private plunge pool. All the children were housed in one villa which we also converted into our little ‘hangout’ place.

APRIL-MAY-JUNE 2016 29

THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP WAS THE DINING EXPERIENCE. IT WAS DIFFERENT EACH DAY AND ALWAYS A LEVEL ABOVE

THE PREVIOUS ONE.

What struck us was that the exquisite architecture of the resort with a row of beautiful, white villas against the backdrop of lush greenery along the backwaters of Kerala. e rooms are simple, well maintained and clean. e housekeeping team and sta are very ecient and all our requests were catered to with precision. We also visited the Jiva Grande Spa.

e highlight of our trip was the dining experience. It was dierent each day and always a level above the previous one. One evening they arranged a boat ride for us on the backwaters. e ambience was quiet and serene and it was the perfect time for some introspection for all of us. When we reached the shores after a peaceful ride

under the moonlight, a beautiful shack-like pontoon was set up for us where the head chef and his sta of six prepared an elaborate seven-course ai meal right before our eyes. e food was delicious and the service was excellent which made the entire experience thoroughly enjoyable.

e next day we asked the Food & Beverage Manager if he could recommend a good local restaurant where we could eat Kerala Syrian biryani. We wanted to enjoy the authentic avours which would only be possible in a local place. At rst, he suggested that he will arrange for it to be brought to our villa. He then surprised us by actually cooking it for us, and it was exactly what we had hoped for – simply

delicious and authentic. And I must add that our stay at Vivanta Bekal was certainly a gourmet adventure for us.

One factor that makes your holiday a success is when the children have a great time and do not get bored. e three days at the resort were well spent. We didn’t feel the need to go out at all because there was so much to do within the resort itself. We played volleyball by the beach and also enjoyed a lot of indoor games. We did however pick up bikes from the resort and explored a few places close by. e children had a wonderful time too and said that they would like to go back to Vivanta by Taj, Bekal for another holiday.

I have already started planning o-sites and conferences for my company there as they also have good banquet facilities. is particular holiday just surpassed our expectations. We were all very happy and denitely vowed to go back soon. It’s a wonderful place for quick weekend holidays and you will surely come back relaxed and rejuvenated.

TRAVEL

The Club members Rajat and Manisha Mehta along with their 4-year-old child Veer, visited Norway and were enchanted by it. Rajat Mehta recounts their ethereal visit.

NORTHERN LIGHTS!

CHASING DOWN THE

All we knew of Norway was that it is a small, cold Scandinavian country somewhere in Northern Europe. With a north to south length of over 2200 kilometres, the country has a population of only 5

million, probably lesser than that of Andheri, though nature has more than made up for it by blessing it with heavenly landscapes, snow-capped mountains, majestic ords, and of course, the Northern Lights (aurora borealis).

We had been discussing and planning our adventure for months, especially given the fact that the intensity of the solar ares responsible for the Northern Lights Is supposed to be very high in 2016 and we did not want to miss the opportunity. However to sight the lights, the best time to visit is February, which is brutally cold with temperatures ranging from 0 to -20 degrees Celsius. We were travelling with our 4-year-old, making the adventure all the more challenging.

Our rst stop was the capital city of Oslo. Just like most

European capital cities with beautiful architecture, Oslo boasts of superb public transport and some beautiful heritage and modern structures. While we were loaded with our woollens, jackets, caps muers, gloves and more, the cold is something you have to reconcile with while in Norway. With a daytime high of -3 degrees Celsius in Oslo, stepping out into the open for even a minute is preceded by half an hour of layering up with woollens, windproof and waterproof clothing – which for us Mumbaikars was quite cumbersome!

We were staying at a centrally located hotel which was within walking distance from the two major attractions in Norway – the scenic Oslo Opera House with its angled, marbled roof that you can actually walk on and the peaceful Oslo Cathedral.

e next destination on our trip was Bergen. e journey to Bergen was a highlight in itself since the train to Bergen runs over Hardangervidda, Europe’s highest mountainous plateau and is one of the most scenic train rides in Europe. e Bergensbanen

APRIL-MAY-JUNE 2016 31

photographs captured by us don’t do justice to this miracle of nature. We stood in our snowsuits, boots, gloves and caps, entranced with our heads looking up, shivering, with a maniacal smile on our frozen face — all physical discomfort was forgotten once the lights started to dance.Norway denitely is a must-visit country and the essence of its appeal is remarkably simple. It is one of the most beautiful countries on earth.

runs for 496 kilometres, taking six and a half hours to cross some of Europe’s most inhospitable terrains and climbs 1200 metres. e sights, glaciers and landscapes are truly otherworldly and we were treated to vast expanses of snow-white landscapes interspersed with frozen lakes and tall pine trees surviving the cold.

Bergen is known as the Gateway to the Fjords. is World Heritage city is surrounded by mountains and ords on three sides with the sea on the fourth side. Founded more than 900 years ago, Bergen has roots going back to the Viking Age and Bryggen (UNESCO World Heritage wharf) is the most historic remnant from that time.

Our next and most awaited destination was Tromso. Four hundred kilometres above the Arctic Circle and with temperatures going as low as -20 degrees Celsius, it was certainly the coldest place we had ever been to and the highest, we have ever travelled! Tromso welcomes millions of tourists every year since it rests right in the middle of the Aurora Belt, that unique circumference around the earth where the chances of sighting the elusive Northern Lights are the highest. Visitors from the world truly unite at this one location where everyone on the tour

bus – people from UK, USA, Europe, Canada and of course India pray fervently for clear, cloudless skies in the hope of an excellent sighting. We started our chase at 5.30 p.m. in the evening, with the temperature in Tromso at -10 degrees Celsius and dropping. e best chance of seeing the lights are outside the city with no habitation in the vicinity to conict with the lights in the sky. Our wait started from 8.00 p.m. with absolutely clear skies and severe cold, which even the hot chocolate was unable to dispel. It began as a grey blur in the sky… more like the Milky Way seen on a night full of stars. As we waited, the temperature dropped to -18 degrees Celsius. Soon, there were more grey-white blurs on the horizon which on the camera with the delayed exposure settings would appear hazy green and our guide assured us that the Northern Lights are up there. After years of hoping, months of planning and hours of waiting… a grey blur was denitely not what we expected!

At 12.00 a.m. however, the lights danced for us and how! e shimmering curtain of green, moving all around the sky above us gave us a celestial, divine feeling of seeing something unreal, other-worldly… godly even… a sight which cannot be explained in words. Even the

MEMBER PROFILE

Ajanta Pharma’s Managing Director Yogesh Agrawal and Joint Managing Director Rajesh Agarwal were recently awarded the TIME India Young Maker of the Year Award by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ever since they took charge of Ajanta Pharma, they have changed the company’s growth trajectory. The brothers tell us about their personal values and work ethics.

Text by Vaishali Fernandes

MAKING ITBIG

What made Ajanta Pharma stand out against the 3,000 companies competing for the award? In the last 10 years, we have steered the business with a lot of passion. I believe that great products and the ability to sell them is what make a great company. We brought in a lot of innovative products and also sold them well – this distinguished us from the other companies. What inspires you?Constantly creating something new is what keeps me going. I was instrumental in designing our oce as well.

How do you keep your employees motivated? We do a lot of simple things and do it with enthusiasm. Every employee at Ajanta is driven by passion to build and create new products. Almost 90% of our employees have remained the same over the last 10 years, and they have grown with the company. As a result, we understand each other well.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?Maintaining a balance is always a challenge because after you reach a certain level, work takes over 24x7. I do try and take short trips and Maldives is one of my favourite destinations. I also avail the facilities at e Club.

What are the facilities that you enjoy at e Club?My children have literally grown up at e Club, especially my daughter who learnt swimming and squash here. My son is currently learning squash at e Club. I personally come to e Club for walks and also frequent the gym and the swimming pool. We’ve hosted most of our company review meetings at e Club and all our board meetings in oce have been catered by e Club. We simply love e Club’s food. What do you like the most about e Club? For me, e Club is by far the best club in Mumbai. I also see that the management is very passionate, right from Mr. Khanna to the managers and the employees. I’ve been interacting with the team for so many years now and they always have a smile on their face. What are the values you would like to pass on to your kids and young employees?I feel many a times, we focus on the end objective and forget about learning during the process. It’s very important to understand and learn something and then excel in it. If you do a lot of good things and sometimes the right things, success will be yours. Don’t complicate it. Both life and business can be very simple.

Congratulations on receiving the Young Maker of the Year Award. How do you, as a young Managing Director, feel on receiving this award?

It’s actually very exciting and is a privilege. ere are two things that made the award even more special. One was being globally recognised on a huge platform with a phenomenal jury that included Narayana Murthy, Chanda Kochhar and many more. And second was to receive it from the Prime Minister himself. It was an extremely emotional journey as they also played a video on Ajanta Pharma in front of industry stalwarts.

YOGESH AGRAWAL, Managing Director, Ajanta Pharma

APRIL-MAY-JUNE 2016 33

Before I begin, I would like to congratulate you on receiving the Young Maker of the Year Award. How do you feel on receiving this award?

We are deeply honoured and privileged to be recognised on such a platform. is recognition is proof of all the hard work and eort that every Ajanta employee has put in over the last 10 to 15 years. And it’s denitely a matter of pride to receive this award from the Prime Minster Narendra Modi himself.

What makes Ajanta Pharma one of the top-most pharmaceutical companies in the county?ere’s always been clarity of thought. Over the years, Ajanta has developed the ability to identify opportunities, innovate and implement strategies that will work. Our strategy implementation has been at par with the best companies and it has ensured that our results are equally good.

As a Joint Managing Director, how do you ensure that your employees are constantly motivated? We believe in leading from the front. at has kept the team anchored. Also, consistency of thought and execution of our plans play a major role in motivating the employees and giving them the security that they seek.

What inspires you?e inspiration comes mostly from my parents and from the values they have inculcated in us. A lot of it also comes from within. During our challenging phase, my brother and I were convinced that we could do well, and that was a huge inspiration for us.

Which facilities of e Club do you enjoy?Although I haven’t been very regular due to my busy schedule, I cannot imagine life without e Club. Summer or winter, my kids would drag me to swim with them every weekend. at is something we really cherish. ey also trained in squash and use the football ground a lot. I personally like to visit the Antara Spa. Garden Grill is one of my favourite restaurants in the suburbs, and I love celebrating Lohri at e Club. I

make it a point to attend the Anada Wine Festival as well. We also use e Club banquets for birthdays, conferences, etc.

What do you like the most about e Club? What certainly stands out is the vast expanse, which I don’t think any other club in the vicinity oers. e service is also at par

with 5-star hotels. e sta is like my extended family. e high standard of food is impressive.

So how do you balance you work and personal life?My day starts at my home gym. I also regularly go for walks. Post work, I look forward to ending the day with my children. I like to stay updated about the projects they are working on, what they have learnt during the day, etc. I try to be as hands-on as possible.

What is the one value that every young entrepreneur or businessman must inculcate? One of the most important values that I learnt from my parents was the principle of fairness – being fair to your team, being fair to your suppliers and customers. We also value hard work. Hard work cannot be substituted with any form of education. We ensure that our company stands for the same values.

RAJESH AGRAWAL, Joint Managing Director, Ajanta Pharma
