1 VEREINSNACHRICHTEN / CLUB NEWS – APRIL / APRIL 2018 C L A R K , N . J . Dear Members, T he Vorstand would like to wish all our members and their families a very happy and safe Easter Holiday. After the recent late winter storms, the holiday weekend and spring are both very welcoming. Our first outdoor event will be a Biergarten on May 11th, featuring entertainment by Grammy- nominated musician and producer, ALEX MEIXNER. Please remember to volunteer for our upcoming summer events. If you are interested in becoming a team Captain, please contact any Board member. We will be holding Saturday morning “spruce-up” days, beginning the Saturday after Easter, to be ready in time for our summer Biergarten season. We meet about 8 AM and usually work for about 4 hours. There are many tasks to complete before our first outside event, so your assistance is very much needed and appreciated. On the evening of April 7, the Club celebrates 85 years since the end of Prohibition. Much planning has gone into this event, and it promises to be the Cat’s Meow. Many thanks to Steve Hicks and his Mob. You will be treated to the “sparkling sounds of the ‘20s” by the jazz band from New York City, GIN FIZZ. Put on your Glad Rags and come on down to the Juice Joint! Tickets are only a Sawbuck ($10). Come reserve your spot today. The Club is also in the process of expanding our Sunshine Committee. We are planning to provide better communications throughout the Deutscher Club family, particularly with our more senior members, so we will be able to offer assistance, including providing friendship and meals for those in need. This will be a large undertaking, and help is needed to organize the program. Many thanks to Suzanna Pohlhamus and Birgit Maier for chairing these efforts. If you can help out, please let one of them, or any Board member know. We have many activities scheduled for the month, please refer to the inside pages of the newsletter, and check the web- site regularly. EXHIBIT:The Path to german UnificationThis unique exhibit celebrates

the 25th anniversary of German reunification, where the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) joined the Federal Republic of Germany to create one nation in 1990.

This exhibit was created by the Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED Diktatur (The Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship) and the German Federal Foreign Office and generously donated to the Museum by the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. They are on loan to our club.  The exhibit’s poignant narrative is relayed in 20 posters, ranging from topics like fear and skepticism regarding German reunification, to the “Two Plus Four Agreement” which paved the way for unity. A major theme of this exhibit is freedom, as described by U.S. President Ronald Reagan:

“I noticed words crudely spray painted upon the wall, perhaps by a young Berliner, ‘This wall will fall. Beliefs become reality.’ Yes, across Europe, this wall will fall. For it cannot withstand faith; it cannot withstand truth. The wall cannot withstand freedom.”

Five posters will be on display at the DC beginning March 25th and rotated approximately every 1-2 weeks.

Deutsche Ecke DIE DEUTSCHE SPRACHE

THE gERMAN LANgUAgE

How many people in the world speak German as their mother tongue? As the most spoken language in the EU and in seven other countries,

there are around 130 million people who can communicate either as native or second language learners in German. In 2017 the editorial department of the office of the standard orthography, Duden, reported that the current German language has 23 million words. The German language is well known for its long, linked together words, which create problems for those learning German. The longest word (with 44 letters), so says Duden, is: attention deficit hyperactivity disturbance. Other examples (of which there are hundreds) are: atomic weapons arsenal, credibility problem, Boy Scout group leader, news editing office, special department floor, etc. (Guess what a Schiffsfahrtkapitänskajüte is!)

Albrecht Dürer was born in 1471 in Nuremberg where he apprenticed

as a goldsmith with his father before deciding to become an artist. Nuremberg in the 15th and 16th centuries was in the heart of the Holy Roman Empire with economic, manufacturing, and intellectual opportunities that supported Dürer’s artistic talent. Albrecht Dürer was a fine painter of portraits, including self-portraits, altarpieces and other religious art, and landscapes, but he was a genius with woodcuts and copper engravings. Dürer’s woodcut called The Rhinoceros is one of the most famous

animals in art history. He was also a published author who believed that art was based on a system of measurements. Albrecht Dürer’s signature “AD” became the first ever copyrighted logo. In addition, Dürer’s talent was noticed by Maximillian I who hired him as court painter in 1512. Dürer died in Nuremberg in 1528. Albrecht Dürer is known as the greatest German artist of the Renaissance, whose work was admired and influential throughout Europe. Barbara Streit
