My name is Michael Huff, and I am the Exalted Ruler of this Lodge for the 2020-2021 year. I do not want to start my first letter as ER on a less than encouraging note, but as I write this we are trying to fill in the officer positions for this year. We have near- ly 1,000 members in Lompoc, and I am hoping that at least a couple of you might consider doing this for the Lodge and yourselves. The time and commit- ments are not great, but without these positions filled, we may not survive intact next year. Failing to fill the positions could result in us losing control of our Lodges future. Most of you do not know me. I have only lived in Lompoc for 18 months, and I have only been a member in Lompoc Elks Lodge for 13 months. I transferred from Monterey where I held of several offices, including Secretary, Loyal Knight and Trustee. I have been an Elk for 23 years, and have not regretted going through Initiation. I will try to be available around the Lodge as much as possible. Ask for me if you are there. I would love to meet as many of you as I can. I can answer questions, listen to your concerns, and if they are something the Board of Trus- tees and House Committee can address, I will make sure that they are heard. I would love to have more people involved in the process of running this Lodge and making it a success. Also, expect that I will ask you to perhaps give a little time back to the Lodge. On an Elks Care note, we are all familiar with the Coronavirus, including the truths and rumors about it. It is a major public health issue, particularly where numerous people come in contact with each other. This is why major professional and college sports are suspending or pausing their seasons until this crisis is passed. Please be aware of the basic symptoms: Coughing, Congestion, Fever and Shortness of Breath. If you are showing these symptoms, please contact a health care provider and get tested. If you want to keep up with what is going on in the County, look at this website prepared by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department: http://publichealthsbc.org/ Stay well, have fun, enjoy your Lodge. I promise the letters after this one will be lighter in tone. Thank you for allowing me to become the ER. See you at #2274. From the Wood Chucker's GOT WOOD?

The Elks “Wood Chuckers” can Deliver. Cold Weather, BBQ’s or Camp Fires, we’ve got the wood.

Call Jim Turri (805- 588-6206) for details

Volunteers Needed! Hoop Shoot

Contact Lodge Office 805-736-8866 or [email protected]

By the time you read this article we will have dropped members delinquent in their dues. A sad and hard decision to make but the Lodge has no choice.

Only the member has a choice and if someone no longer wants to continue in the Elks, there’s nothing we can do. I would like to reiterate what I said last month “Remember if you are dropped you have two (2) months to request reinstate-ment free, if you pay your back-year dues and the com-ing year dues. We don’t want to drop you. Every member is important, so come in and talk to us so we can help you re-main in the greatest organiza-tion on earth.

I hope everyone is taking this Coronavirus seriously and be-ing careful in your daily activi-ties. The Lodge is reevaluating all Lodge activities in the interest of safety for our members. For example, the Boy Scout fundraiser was canceled, which was a hard deci-sion because the Scouts need our support. The risk is too high and the consequences too great to not be cau-tious. I’m sure in the days ahead more activities will need to be reevaluated and canceled or rescheduled for a safer time. I’m sure our members will understand.

Fraternally, Bob Schrum, PDDGER, Secretary

Welcome to a new lineup of Officers. Let’s all get in volved and make it a great year by volunteering at the Lodge. What’s more fun than spending time to-gether and helping build lasting bonds with fellow Elks?

Speaking of fun when regular hours resume…Friday night Cook Your Own is a great way to spend quality family time and enjoy a well-cooked meal. If you are planning to meet your friends or family here, and will be a group of 6 or more, please let the Club Manager know ahead of time (even a couple hours helps). We want to make sure that we have enough staff on duty to serve you, and more importantly, enough food to fill you.

We are always looking for willing volunteers to help in the kitchen. Immediate openings for cashier and server for Friday lunch. You will receive a free lunch and two drink tickets just for helping out 11:00 – 1:00. Contact the Club Manager for more information.

Thank you to Victor Gonzales & Hot Dog Crew for your donation to the Babe Ruth

and Lompoc Little League

Elks Boy Scouts BBQ Fundraiser Date to be determined

National Veterans Service

by John P. Hurd

They say April brings the Flowers, well, I don’t know if that’s true here in Lompoc.

Last April I wrote in my April’s Re-port that there was only one Living Doolittle Raider left sadly I have to report that Richard Cole died April 9, 2019. He was Lieutenant Colonel Doolittle, Co-Pilot, and was the last living Raider. He was 103 years of age.

A little more history. There are only 389,292 living men and women left who served in WWII. I’ve read that 294 are dying each day. Please say a prayer for each of the men and women who are still with us.

Again, thank you to all who help every month with our Vets Push. I would also like to thank Victor Gon-zales for going the extra mile with helping me set up the Lodge for the Vet’s Push is canceled.

April’s Vets Push will be announced when Lodge re-opens. I look for-ward to seeing you then.

Last but not least, an Old Chinese Proverb:

“The buffalo that arrives late will have to drink muddy water and

eat dry grass”

See you at the Lodge

John Hurd,

Veteran’s Service Chairman

Aid to Local Handicap is honored to help our special needs community with another fun filled fishing event. The Happy Happenings event will take place at River Park and is scheduled for April 25 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Calaveras Trout Farm at the last minute was able to find trout …So we will be stocking the lake with Rainbow Trout instead of Blue Gill. We are always looking for volunteers to help out with this fishing event.

Anyone that wants to help out with this event please call Wally 805-757-7826 or Neil 805-735-2345 or you can e-mail me [email protected] or just show up at the Kiwanis Lake at River Park. The BBQ Team will help out cooking Hamburgers and Hot dogs. Chairman of Aid to Local Handicap. Wally Henry

SCOLORSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT

By Roger Mann

There is always good news to report! Two Lompoc students have been awarded Most Valuable Student Scholarships at the California State Level. Eli Pellot (Cabrillo H.S.) has been granted a $1,500 scholarship and Karla Paniagua (Lompoc H.S.) has been awarded $800. Hundreds of youngsters ap-plied this year and few reached the State Level competition.

Both Karla and Eli are straight A students and en-rolled in many advanced placement classes. They have been Elks Student of the Quarter recipients and actively involved in the community as well as school. Karla and Eli are athletes and captains of their sports teams, class officers, Liaisons for

Youth Leadership Lompoc Valley, active in church, participate in com-munity service, and have been accepted by several prestigious colleg-es. They inspire their classmates and serve as great representatives for our special community and local public schools.

April is a big month for the scholarship committee. We will be grading 8

th graders for the first time, and seniors for the Student of the Year

awards (4@$1,000).

Thank you for your continued support!

Respectfully, Roger Mann (Scholarship Chairman)
