With a temperature of about 71° Tuesday afternoon, it was an itch to see if anyone else had the itch — we’re talking spring fever. Meet Karla and Brien Beadle (above), your new managers for the Sunnyside Country Club. While Brien was spiffing up the outside of the establishment, including power-washing the entire exterior of the club house, Karla was busy inside cleaning, dusting and organizing. They’re both excited about the opportunity that lies ahead. Along with all the usual duties, they plan on putting a little extra into this managing endeavour. “For one thing she’s an excellent cook,” says hubby Brien of his loving wife Kara and, with that, Sunnyside’s menu will be expanding a bit according to customers’ tastes and requests. And, our local beverage distributors are in the process of getting Sunnyside’s coolers stocked for another great golfing season. Feel free to stop in and meet Karla & Brien to get acquainted and they can memorize your favorite beverage(s) before hitting the links at Sunnyside Country Club. The tarps should be coming off the greens in a week or so (still prone to freezing temperatures at this point).

Tuesday’s teaser: A man runs into a bar and asks for a glass of water. The bartender proceeds to pull out a shotgun, jack a shell into the chamber and yells at him. The man then thanks the bartender, and walks out a happy camper. Why did the man thank the bartender?Answer: The hair stylist would get paid more for two haircuts than one. Today’s teaser: Why would a hair stylist rather cut the hair of two brunettes than one blonde?

Montana’s wolf population remained stable last year while livestock depredations by wolves continued to decline, dropping about 27 percent from 2012. A total of 627 wolves were counted in Montana at the end of 2013, compared to 625 last year, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ federally required annual wolf conservation and management report. The minimum wolf count is the number of wolves actually verified by FWP wolf specialists. “Among the best news is that confirmed wolf depredations on livestock took a significant drop in 2013,” said FWP Director Jeff Hagener. “And that comes on top of fewer overall agency control actions than the previous year.” The continuing decrease in livestock depredations over the past four years may be a result of several factors including targeted wolf depredation responses—and the effects of wolf harvest by hunters and trappers, which may also account for the drop in breeding pairs in the 2013 count. Overall, Hagener said Montana’s wolf population continues a stabilizing trend that’s likely a combination of suitable habitats being filled, smaller pack sizes, livestock-related removals by federal Wildlife Services, and hunter and trapper harvests. “When considered as a whole, it appears those factors are continuing to curb wolf population growth,” Hagener said. Confirmed livestock depredations due to wolves included 50 cattle, 24 sheep, three horses and one goat in 2013, down 27 percent from 2012 losses of 67 cattle, 37 sheep, one dog, two horses and one llama. Cattle losses were the lowest recorded in the past seven years. The decline in wolf depredations continues a general downward trend that began in 2009. A total of 75 wolves were removed via lethal control, down from 108 that occurred in 2012. Of the 75 wolves removed last year for livestock depredations, eight were killed by private citizens with permits to take offending wolves or under Montana’s defense of property laws. The report shows that 231 wolves were taken by hunters and trappers in the 2013 calendar year—or between Jan. 1, 2013 and Dec. 31, 2013—compared to 175 taken in 2012. Included among other mortalities are 10 wolves killed illegally and 10 by vehicle collisions. The additional 94 wolves harvested in 2014—as a result of the trapping season, which concluded Feb. 28, and the hunting season, which ended March 15—will be considered in the 2014 minimum wolf counts. FWP’s complete report is available at fwp.mt.gov.

Travels have gone well this month, and I am thankful for your prayers through this time. Many of you have casually or more seriously asked me in recent months about what my plans are for the rest of the year. In the midst of praying about and considering what God’s plans for me are after this initial two year commitment, I came across a quote by CS Lewis that has encouraged me to rest, refocus, and trust God.

“Never, in peace or war, commit your virtue or your happiness to the future. Happy work is best done by the

Amtrak’s Empire Builder passenger train will still be making stops in northeastern Montana seven days a week, but next week it will be at new times. Effective Tuesday, April 15th, the Empire Builder’s eastbound train is scheduled to arrive in Glasgow at 12:47 p.m. while the westbound is scheduled to arrive at 1:21 p.m. (both Mountain time). In Williston, North Dakota the new arrival time for the westbound will be 11:42 a.m. and the eastbound 4:09 p.m. (both Central time). In a related matter, Amtrak is possibly about one year away from putting a scheduled daily stop in at Culbertson for both the westbound and eastbound Empire Builder trains.

Calling his shot?Logan Sinclair does his best Babe Ruth imitation in a fun-filled afternoon of sandlot baseball at Cal Ripken Field. Apparently the Babe’s legendary called shot over the center field bleachers at Wrigley Field during the 1932 World Series will never fade amongst youngsters. Although Logan didn’t knock it out of the park, he “punched a screaming liner” deep into the outfield.
