Come the 2016-2017 school year, the music and arts bud-get in the Los Angeles Unified School District will reach its highest point in a dozen years. While that's great news for stu-dents, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music pro-grams have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts.

The benefits of music edu-cation extend far beyond get-ting kids to tap their toes. The National Association for Music Education lists the following benefits among the many rea-sons to support music education in schools.

· Music training helps devel-op language skills. Studies have shown that music training con-tributes to the physical develop-ment of the part of the left side of the brain associated with pro-cessing language. A 2005 study from researchers at Stanford University found that mastering a musical instrument may also improve reading skills, which can benefit students both inside and outside the classroom.

· Music training can improve hand-eye coordination. Stud-ies have linked long-term music training to improved hand-eye coordination. That is likely con-

nected to the motor skills chil-dren develop when playing mu-sical instruments. Without those instruments, those motor skills may not develop as strongly.

· Music improves concentra-tion. Even students who can-not play a musical instrument can still benefit academically from simply listening to music. In 2007, a research team from the Stanford University School of Medicine found that music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying atten-tion. Today's students deal with numerous distractions, from smartphones to tablets to social media, but those who routinely listen to certain types of music might find it easier to block out those distractions and focus on their work.

· Music can help students' emotional development. A 2003 study commissioned by Chorus America found musicians are more likely than the average person to be involved in charity work as volunteers and donors. The NAfME also notes that mu-sic students may be more likely to exhibit empathy toward other cultures.

· Music can improve self-es-teem. In a study examining 117 fourth grade students attend-ing public school in Montreal,

Nei-ther group had participated in formal music instruction before

the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study.

Music education can enrich the lives of young students in a myriad of ways, potentially con-tributing to happier, more fulfill-ing lives.

5 fun things to do at the park

A day at the park is one of the simplest and most cost-effective activities people can embrace as they look to enjoy the great out-doors.

Few things are better than a warm, beautiful day spent in the park. Parks attract millions of visitors each year. Many men, women and children view a visit to the park as a great escape. While it's perfectly acceptable to visit a park and spend the day napping on a patch of green grass, there are many additional activities that outdoor enthusi-asts can enjoy when visiting a local park.

1. Hit the trails. Many people visit parks to go hiking. You might find your park has a se-ries of hiking trails right on the property. Pick up a park map and figure out in what direction you plan to set off.

2. Take in the wildlife. Parks are home to local wildlife, and those who want to catch a glimpse of that wildlife can head to the park in the early-morning hours when crowds should be light and things relatively quiet. Take inventory of the various bird species you see, or watch for deer or scurrying chipmunks. Kids can have fun sketching park animals.

3. Have a picnic. Pack a lunch, a blanket, a book and some sports equipment and head to the park for a picnic with family and friends. Let the kids play while the adults sit back and enjoy some casual al fresco din-ing.

4. Hold an impromptu game. Invite friends and family mem-bers to join you at the park and divide into two teams before playing a couple of innings of softball, volleyball or kickball.

5. Experiment with geocach-ing. Geocaching is a hobby in which individuals use latitude

and longitude coordinates to pinpoint hidden caches. Inside boxes or containers they may find clues to another cache or even some small trinkets. Geo-caching can be an interesting way to incorporate science and global positioning lessons into a fun outdoor activity.

Enjoy a day at the park. The resources are numerous, and the cost is often very low.
