Our city and collaborative is blessed with not one but two conferences of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Inspired by Gospel values, The SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT dePAUL leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person services to the needy and suffering, in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and patron, St. Vin-cent de Paul. St. Vincent’s helps those that need a little extra help in our parish communities. Whether if its lack of money for oil in the winter or that extra few hundred dollars to help with a security deposit - St. Vincent’s helps those in most need here in Beverly. Joe Grein is responsible for the conference that covers people living in the parishes of St. Mary’s and St. Mar-garet’s while Bill Phelan is responsible for the conference covering the territory of St. John the Evangelist Parish. Please remember them in the poor boxes when exiting the church.

Students are having fun with Mrs. Knapp at the afterschool enrichment running club!

Some of us were asking our priest to add a Sunday Mass to the schedule. He said that he could not because he is alone and priests are not allowed to say more than two Masses a day. What’s up with that? Your priest was right in saying that there is a limit placed upon the number of times a priest can preside at liturgy. Normally, that is twice a day. The canon law that guides us in this matter is #905, which says that “if priests are lacking, the local ordinary (bishop) may permit priests, for a just cause, to celebrate twice a day and even, if pasto-ral need requires it, three times on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation.” The reasons for this are many. One is to protect the faith. It takes some energy to celebrate Mass well! If your high school geometry teacher taught six identical classes daily, and you met her in the last period of the day, you may struggle with measuring your floor for linoleum today! Another reason is to protect the unity of the assembly. Adding a Mass to a parish schedule might have the effect of diminishing and scattering the assembly. Our tradition has a strong bias against that. Bishops are concerned today about overtaxing their priests. Your priest knows his own limits too, and it could be that by Sunday afternoon, he simply doesn’t have the resources of the energizer bunny for celebrating and preaching well. As it is, many priests are on the road in service to far-flung communities. Some bishops allow their priests to celebrate three Masses on Satur-days (perhaps a morning Mass, a wedding Mass, and an anticipated Mass), but they have to ask the Holy See for permission, and that is usually only given for a period of three years. It’s a good rule. Your priest will be enor-mously cheered if you put your energy into building up the celebrations already in place.

April 29 ~ Fifth Sunday of Easter Did you hear the words of today’s gospel? “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without you can do nothing.” What a consolation to have Jesus guiding and companioning us. With him, we have the ability to be his disciples. During this Easter season, hold fast to the truth that Christ accompanies us in the work of evangeliza-tion. So let’s get to work!
