This program integrates all aspects of STEM – Sci- ence, Technology, Engi- neering & Math. I was able to go with the stu- dents on Tuesday to see the culmination of their five days at STARBASE (which is located on the military base by the Min- neapolis airport). To say that I was blown away by what the kids were learn- ing would be an under- statement. The day that I was there the students were launching their rock- ets. The students had used a 3-D printer and CAD software to design and produce the fins of their own rocket. After they launched their rockets, they used a GPS to locate the coordinates, then went back inside the classroom and entered the coordi- nates into Google Earth to measure how far their rocket flew. Talk about exciting! They were then able to see which types of rocket fins were able to launch the farthest and discuss & evaluate why. This whole experience is one that I’m sure no fourth grader will ever forget. Hopefully, this opportuni- ty inspired many of them to continue in STEM relat- ed careers. Oh, and one more thing… I think they all walked away with a greater understanding of why learning math and science is so important!
