A primary goal of the UNEP Chemicals is to assist countries and others responsible for chemicals management in ensur-ing environmentally sound production, use, and disposal practices.

To accomplish this aim and so protect human health and the environment, UNEP Chemicals publishes a wide range of publications on the environmentally sound management of chemicals. They are available free of charge. Some are available in hard copy and on Internet (www.chem.

Master List of Actions on the Reduction and/or Elimination of the Releases of POPs (4th Edition) Presents actions to reduce and/or eliminate POPs. It is intended to foster co-ordination and co-operation between and among activities at the national, regional, and international levels in countries and organizations, thereby helping to avoid duplication and ensure efficient use of resources. Reducing and Eliminating the Use of Persistent Organic Pesti-cides: Guidance on Alternative Strategies for Sustainable Pest and Vector Management This Guidance is a UNEP/FAO/WHO and is a part of a package aimed to facilitate and support the development of initiatives at all levels to reduce and/or eliminate releases of POPs. Finding Alternatives to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) for Termite Management Web-pages developed by the UNEP/FAO/Global IPM Facility Ex-pert Group on Termite Biology and Management. Available in E (2003) and on Internet (www.chem.unep.ch/pops/termites/termite_toc.htm).

UNEP/OECD Screening Information Data Sets (SIDS), vol. 7, parts 1, 2, 3 and vol. 8, parts 1, 2, 3 Brings the total published of the Screening Information Data Sets (SIDS) for High Production Volume Chemicals to eight vol-umes in 17 parts (1998-2002). The series are developed by the OECD and published by UNEP Chemicals. Available in hard copy and on Internet (E).

Recent Publications Global Mercury Assessment The Report responds to the request of UNEP Governing Council Decision 21/5, that UNEP understake a global assessment of mercury and its compounds. The assessment drew on participa-tion from Governments, IGOs and NGOs. The assessment con-cluded that there is sufficient evidence of significant global ad-verse impacts to warrant international action to reduce risk to human health and environment raising from the release of mer-cury. 20002. Standardized Toolkit for Identification and Quantification of Dioxin and Furan Releases The toolkit has been developed to assist countries in identifying sources and estimating releases of dioxins and furans. Countries are invited to use the toolkit to develop inventories and submit them to UNEP. Available in hard copy (E, F, R ,S) and on Internet, 2001.

Ridding the World of POPs: A guide to Stockholm Convention The Guide outlines five aims : eliminate dangerous POPs, start-ing with the 12 worst; support the transition to safer alterna-tives; target additional POPs for action; clean-up old stockpiles and equipment containing POPs; and work together for a POPs-free future. Available in hardcopy (E, F, S) and on Internet, 2002.

PCB Transformers and Capacitors: From Management to Reclassification and Disposal The publication is UNEP’s fourth concerning PCBs. It aims to pro-vide practical assistance to those responsible for PCB-containing transformers and capacitors , as countries work towards safe management and eventual safe disposal of these equipments.
