2 Welcome to the Catholic Communities of St. Pius X, St. Anthony & St. Mary
From the Pastor’s Desk
Let’s face it: recent years have seen unprecedented shocks to what we what have come to expect from our country and world as far as our general health, happiness and expecta-tions for the future welfare of this and future generations to come. While we are tempted to look exclusively to our own needs, Pope Francis has consistently called us to see the suffering of the poor and the declining health of our planet which further threat-ens those who live in meager and even life threatening situations. Last Sunday’s reading from Acts reminds us of a time when Christians were particularly concerned about the poor and took real concrete steps to tend to their needs in ways that fur-ther solidified the bonds that truly reflected the body of Christ as we were called to be that body in the very best sense of our bap-tismal calling. Aside from the constant stream of news that reflects a world much at war within itself, we– like those disciples gathered in the Upper Room for fear of threats which lie outside their locked door– can look to that same Pope for signs of hope and encouragement much like that which Christ offered when he breathed the gift of the Holy Spirit upon them and thrice offered a peace which defies the dark trials of this world. Daniel Burke, a religious reporter for CNN, has written of finding that peace in tears that came to him as he watched the Pope helping strangers in the ordinary circumstances of his daily encounters with visitors to the Vatican: “As Francis approached the wheel chairs, a dark-haired man slowly uncoiled to meet his embrace. Francis touched the man’s head, blessing him, said a few words and moved down the line. Moments later, a small boy leaped from his chair to hug Francis. His mother wiped her hands on her pants before shaking the Pope’s. I was surprised to find my eyes tearing, accompanied by a short burst of benevolence. I felt a brief urge to hug everyone in the room. (I am not a hugger.) Covering my tears’ tracks, I turned to a colleague. He was emo-tional too.” Burke goes on to try to analyze this phenomenon of tear-ing up and immediately feeling called to share contagious signs of benevolence to others. He then contacted philosophers, psycholo-gists and spiritual leaders to find out what happens in these and similar situations which bring forth urges to change our world for the better. He would find that psychologists name the emotion evoked in such encounters “elevation” and it came from studies done at the University of Virginia by Jonathan Haidt who was tired of studying negative emotions and was attracted by the idea of “positive psychology "and wanted to learn how to harness the power of emotions for moral growth, to help us to live fulfilling and ethical lives. Haidt found that “When any . . . act of charity or gratitude is presented to our sight or imagination, we are deeply impressed with its beauty or feel a strong desire in ourselves of doing chari-table or grateful acts also.” Burke reported that this emotion which was understood as far back as Thomas Jefferson has been documented as well by studies in India, Japan and elsewhere, though people may use other terms for it. And religions have been telling elevating stories about selfless heroes for centuries. So the next time the news has you feeling depressed, take note of encounters like Jesus breaking through the gloom of the Upper Room or Pope Francis encountering the sick at the Vati-can or, perhaps, you yourself engaging somebody you know who is hurting and in need of a healing touch or warm embrace.

Hey Kids!
Did you know that US Senator, Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin started Earth Day on April 22, 1970 as an environmental teach-ing? Now people all over the whole United States forty-eight years later are celebrating Earth Day! How are your Earth Day Celebra-tion projects coming along? Maybe you can display your project at the Earth Day "Our Common Home" Celebration in Minong on Sun-day, April 22nd at 4:00 pm. Talk to your religious ed teachers about your projects and how to get them displayed for everyone to see. Pope Francis has described the Earth as our "Common
Home." Wouldn't he be really proud of your Earth Day projects?
Pray For our friends and neighbors who are ill or homebound. If you know someone who should be put on or removed from this list, please call the office.
