By David UffingtonThe Consumer Federation of America

has a new website designed to help reduceidentity theft. IDTheftInfo.org is packedwith consumer, business and victimresources, as well as the latest news and asection on shopping for identity-theft serv-ices.

One section on the website exploreshow well you guard your personally iden-tifying information (PII), even somethingas simple as your library card. If you wereto lose the card, you might not be too con-cerned as it's not something connectedwith your bank account. But if someonechecks out and doesn't return (in effect, steals) books or videos under your name, you're responsible for the monetary dam-ages.

ID Theft Info suggests making a "PIIChart" to document the identity relationswe have with companies and individuals.Who has our name, address, phone num-ber and email address? A security breachin one area can lead to other areas alsobeing breached, and it need not be associ-ated only with financial transactions.Homeowner associations, frequent-flierclubs and churches can all have pieces ofour personal information that can be puttogether.

Some suggestions:Use a Post Office box for miscella-

neous mail such as club newsletters andchurch bulletins; disable the GPS photofunction on your smartphone; and use onlyone credit card for online purchases. Don'tsign up with your real name on publicInternet sites. Work to limit the amount ofinformation in each section of your PIIChart.

When you go to the doctor and fill outthe forms, leave out your Social Securitynumber. Ask if you can substitute anotherform of identification.

Don't use public charging stations oranyone else's computer for your cellphone, and don't let anyone else hook theirphone to your computer. Data-stealingmalware could be transferred from one tothe other.

Are you a potential victim of identitytheft? Assess your risk with an online test. The higher the score, the bigger your risk.Big point items (indicating a larger risk)are questions about whether you'veordered your credit report in the last twoyears, posted your outgoing mail at homein an unlocked mailbox or failed to scruti-nize your monthly bank and credit-cardstatements.

Look around the ID Theft Info website. The more you know, the less likely you'llbecome a victim of identity theft.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot per-sonally answer reader questions, but will incor-porate them into his column whenever possible.Write to him in care of King Features WeeklyService, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

How to write your own willFew people, young or old, look forward

to writing a will. A will is not an easy sub-ject to broach, but it is important to havedocuments in place to ease the burden forfamily members.

When a person dies without a will, hisor her assets might not go where he or sheintended. In some instances, assets mightgo to the government. For parents who diebefore their children are grown, a will canalso serve as a legal document indicating aplan for custody of the kids.

Although it is often preferable to con-sult with a local estate-planning attorneywho understands the language and legali-ties surrounding a will, it is also possibleto write a will yourself. There are formsthat can be purchased from office-supplystores, or a will can be prepared online byanswering questions and then generating aform to print. The will also can be typed orhandwritten.

Laws regarding wills vary based onwhere you live. Therefore, learn the legali-ties before preparing a will so you willhave a document that holds up in a courtof law and can be executed to your desires. Here is some of the basic information thatmay be included in your will.

•Include your name, address, date ofbirth, and social security numbers if theywill better help identify you should therebe confusion.

•State that you are of sound mind whenwriting this will and of contractual capaci-ty.

•Write a statement indicating that thiswill revokes all other wills that may havebeen executed before.

•List the names and addresses of all ofyour children. If the children are minors, atthis point you can also specify your wisheswith regards to their guardianship. List thenames and addresses of the people whomyou wish to have custody of your children.

•Appoint an executor or executrix tocarry out the affairs of your estate andinstructions specified in the will. This per-

son typically must be over the age of 18.Select someone whom you trust to honoryour wishes.

•Indicate how you want the executor tohandle your financial affairs, includingpaying taxes, funeral costs, final expenses, etc.

•Indicate the executor has permission tosell your home and personal belongingsthat are not included in personal gifts to bedistributed.

•List any gifts you would like to be dis-tributed to certain people. This may be adoll collection to a daughter, coins to ason, china to an aunt, etc.

•Specify the percentages of your assetsto be distributed should the listed benefici-aries survive you. Maybe you want todivide your estate evenly between twochildren. You may have more specificbreakdowns. Should these people not sur-vive you, you can establish an alternate orlist nothing, in which case the assets willbe put back into the general pot.

•Include a residuary clause that stateshow to distribute any remaining assets.

•State whether you want the executor tobe reimbursed for any expenses that resultfrom executing the will.

•Indicate that you would like the execu-tor to post bond as a form of insurance sothat the executor can't run off with themoney for himself.

•Name an alternative executor shouldthe first pass away before executing thewill or if he or she is unable to serve uponyour death.

•Sign the will in front of two or threewitnesses and a notary public. The wit-nesses cannot be anyone named in thewill.

This article is intended as general infor-mation about what is typically covered in astandard will. It should not be taken aslegal advice. Prior to implementing any ofthese tips, consult with an attorney certi-fied in estate planning.

Making mosquitoes less dangerousWhat is the most dangerous creature on Earth? No,

it's not a jaw-snapping alligator, enormous elephant oreven the king of the jungle himself. The IllinoisDepartment of Public Safety says the tiny mosquito haskilled more people than all the wars in history and morethan many of the most ferocious animals.

Mosquitoes may be a nuisance in most backyards, butthese small insects also have a dramatic impact on howdiseases are transferred. Genetic manipulation of wildmosquitoes could help reduce the number of people whobecome sick or die because of mosquito bites.

According to an abstract titled, "A Fitness Advantagefor Ades Aegypti and the Viruses It Transmits WhenFemales Feed Only on Human Blood," published by TheAmerican Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene,mosquito-transmitted diseases are on the rise, includinga dramatic increase in the incidence of infections causedby the dengue virus. Two billion people might be at riskeach year.

There are also scores of other diseases that are passedon through the bite of a mosquito. West Nile virus, malaria and encephalitis are just a few of the diseases orviruses transmitted by mosquitoes. Most mosquitoesattack birds and mammals, although some will feed onthe blood of amphibians and reptiles. Only the femalebites, as she needs a blood meal for egg laying. Allmales and the females of only a few species do not bite, feeding rather on nectar and plant juices.

There are reasons to be cautiously optimistic that themosquito population can be controlled. Pesticide is onesuch method. But even pesticides have not been hugelysuccessful at stopping the spread of disease, partly dueto mosquito insecticide resistance. Changes in weatherpatterns, including warmer winters, have helped themosquito repopulate.

Over the past 20 years, researchers have attempted togenetically modify mosquitoes so that they cannot infecthumans with malaria -- one of the most common mos-quito-spread diseases. But up until very recently theefforts fell short. However, in 2010, University ofArizona entomologists succeeded in genetically alteringthe insects in a way that renders them completelyimmune to the malaria parasite. The mosquitoes are thenincapable of passing the disease along to others as vec-tors.

The team that completed the genetic work relied onmolecular biology to create a piece of genetic code thatwas inserted into a mosquito's genome. Then the con-

struct was injected into the eggs of mosquitoes. Thehatched larva contained the altered genetic data and thenproliferated -- passing on the new information to futuremosquito generations. Even after being fed blood infect-ed with malaria, the mosquitoes infected with the malar-ia parasites were not able to infect other insects.

According to Michael Riehle, a professor of entomol-ogy in the UA's College of Agriculture and LifeSciences, who lead the research on genetic manipulation,of the estimated 250 million people who contract malar-ia each year, 1 million - mostly children - do not survive.

Although this genetic research is still in its infancyand no modified mosquitoes have yet been released intothe wild, it may provide the blueprint for making mos-quitoes immune to the parasites that lead to other seriousdiseases. Still, scientists may be able to remove the dan-ger of mosquito bites, but not the pain.

Mosquito facts•Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on Earth. That's right, more deaths are associated with mosqui-

toes than any other animal on the planet. Mosquitoesmay carry any number of deadly diseases, includingmalaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and encephalitis.Mosquitoes also carry heartworm, which can be lethal toyour dog.

•Only female mosquitoes bite humans and animals;males feed on flower nectar.

Mosquitoes mean nothing personal when they takeyour blood. Female mosquitoes need protein for theireggs, and must take a blood meal in order to reproduce.Since males don't bear the burden of producing young, they'll avoid you completely and head for the flowersinstead. And when not trying to produce eggs, femalesare happy to stick to nectar, too.

•Some mosquitoes don't bite humans, preferring otherhosts like amphibians or birds.

Not all mosquito species feed on people. Some mos-quitoes specialize on other animals, and are no bother tous at all. Culiseta melanura, for example, bites birdsalmost exclusively, and rarely bites humans.

•Mosquitoes fly at speeds between 1 and 1.5 milesper hour.

That might sound fast, but in the insect world, mos-quitoes are actually rather slow. If a race were heldbetween all the flying insects, nearly every other contest-ant would beat the pokey mosquito. Butterflies, locusts,

and honey bees would all finish well ahead of theskeeter.

•A mosquito's wings beat 300-600 times per second. This would explain that irritating buzzing sound you

hear just before a mosquito lands on you and bites.•Mosquito mates synchronize their wing beats to per-

form a lover'sduet.

Scientistsonce thoughtthat only malemosquitoescould hear thewing beats oftheir potentialmates, butrecent researchon Aedesaegypti mos-quitoes provedfemales listenfor lovers, too. When the male and female meet, theirbuzzing synchronizes to the same speed.

•Salt marsh mosquitoes may travel up to 100 milesfrom their larval breeding habitat.

Most mosquitoes emerge from their watery breedingground and stay pretty close to home. But some, like thesalt marsh mosquitoes, will fly lengthy distances to finda suitable place to live, with all the nectar and bloodthey could want to drink.

•All mosquitoes require water to breed. Some speciescan breed in puddles left after a rainstorm.

Just a few inches of water is all it takes for a femaleto deposit her eggs. Tiny mosquito larva develop quick-ly in bird baths, roof gutters, and old tires dumped invacant lots. If you want to keep mosquitoes under con-trol around your home, you need to be vigilant aboutdumping any standing water every few days.

•An adult mosquito may live 5-6 months.Few probably make it that long, given our tendency

to slap them silly when they land on us. But in the rightcircumstances, an adult mosquito has quite a long lifeexpectancy, as bugs go.

•Mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide from 75 feetaway.

Carbon dioxide, which humans and other animalsproduce, is the key signal to mosquitoes that a potentialblood meal is near. They've developed a keen sensitivityto CO2 in the air. Once a female senses CO2 in thevicinity, she flies back and forth through the CO2 plumeuntil she locates her victim.

Cleaning tips for the grillIt doesn't matter whether you barbecue

year-round, or put the barbecue away forthe winter, it's always a good idea to cleanit thoroughly once or twice a year. Take alook these tips to make the job easier:

What you will need: A steel puttyknife; a heavy duty vacuum; a brass bristlebarbecue brush; plus cleaning suppliesincluding a degreaser for heavy grime, aglass cleaner with ammonia for exteriorcleaning, and stainless steel cleaner/polishfor finishing touches.

First step: Attach your barbecue to thepropane tank or natural gas connection.Use a mixture of dish soap and warmwater to coat all connections to test forleaks -- any bubbling at connections meansthere is a leak. Stop everything and consultyour local barbecue dealer for more help.If your barbecue passes the leak test, remove the grids and heat medium. If pos-sible, remove the burners, inspect them fordamage and blockages - a piece of wirewith some cloth on the end is an excellentway to clear blockages from the burner.

Clean: Re-install the burners, heatmedia, and cooking grids. Light your bar-becue and let it heat up to 200 F. Turneverything off and let it cool until it is justwarm to the touch. Brush the grids thor-oughly on both top and bottom. Removethe grids and set aside. Use your grillbrush to remove any debris on the heatmedia, remove them to expose the burnersand cook box. Using your putty knife, scrape the sides of the cook box to removeany caked-on debris. If your barbecue hasa removable grease tray, take it out withthe debris. If you have a closed-bottomcook box, use your heavy duty vacuum toclean up all the loose ash and debris in thecook box.

Quick Tip: Re-install the grease tray, heat medium, and cooking grids. Heatyour barbecue to at least 400 F and seasonyour cooking grids with olive or grapeseedoil. This will protect your cooking gridsand can prevent food from sticking.

Take a minute to inspect your barbe-

cue's exterior for any other damage andfollow the above process to clean yourside burner as well. Check wheels andcasters for any damage.

Whether your barbecue is brand new orolder than your children and pets, a semi-annual cleaning is highly recommended toensure years of trouble free use.

Barbecue safety tips•Check for leaks. Due to their ease of

use and convenience, propane grills havegrown in popularity over the years. However, proponents of propane grillsshould inspect the propane tank as well asits hoses for leaks, cracks and corrosion.Any of those problems has the potential tobe very dangerous, so address any issuesbefore guests arrive.

•Make the grill area a nonsmoking sec-tion. Some guests will want to smoke, andsince the party's outdoors, this shouldn't bean issue. However, protect the food andreduce the risk of injury by insisting thearea surrounding the grill is a nonsmokingsection.

•Dress in tighter clothing. The party'sgrillmaster should not wear loose clothing.Loose-fitting clothing, particularly longsleeves, can dip into the grill and potential-ly catch on fire.

•Be certain all briquettes are extin-guished. For those who prefer a charcoalgrill, once the cooking has been completedbe careful to extinguish all briquettes.

•Never move the grill indoors. If anunexpected summer rain storm arrives onthe night of the party, the grill should stayoutside while the guests move indoors.

•Keep kids and pets clear.•Don't be liberal with the lighter fluid.

When grilling on a charcoal grill, it's notalways easy to get the fire started. As aresult, many people look to lighter fluid tohelp speed the process along. While thiscan work, it's important to note that notmuch lighter fluid is necessary, and fluidshould never be applied after the coalshave lit.

By Angela Shelf MedearisMost people use the majority of their

energy between breakfast and dinner, solunch is necessary to be productive andenergetic. Dramatic calorie highs andlows aren't good for anyone, especiallythose with diabetes and diet-related ill-nesses. Researchers at the University ofGeorgia studied the eating patterns of ath-letes. Their study determined that menand woman showed higher levels of bodyfat if they had irregular eating patternsthroughout the day, even if they were inenergy balance by the end of the day.

In addition, compared with athleteswho ate consistently through the day(breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner),irregular eaters had worse muscle mass, lower energy levels and poor mentalfocus. These studies prove that when itcomes to lunch, you are what you eat.

Good sources of protein, whole grains, vegetables and fruits will help you bemore focused, productive and energeticthroughout the rest of the day.

Hummus is an easy, healthy snackBy Donna Erickson

It might not be a bad idea to include aglobe or atlas when you start pullingtogether the simple ingredients for mak-ing hummus with your kids and theirfriends. Cooking with an internationaltwist is such a perfect opportunity toteach about geography, history and cur-rent events. It's also a chance to talkabout the rich and varied traditions thatexist all over the world.

This recipe is simple to prepare, andyour kids will love it. Just toss thingsinto the blender and let it whirl. As thegarlic cloves and chickpeas blend togeth-er, questions may abound, starting with,"What is the Middle East in the middleof?" That's where your maps come intothe mix.

In the Middle East and here, hummusis a snack or side dish. It is often servedwith pita bread, the kind with a littlepocket inside. You can fill it with cheese, meat and tabouli salad at lunchtime, or,as in this case, use it as a "dipper." It'skind of like chips.

Hummus1 lemon1 tablespoon olive oil2 tablespoons tahini (sesame seed

paste); look for it near peanut butter orin the international foods section ofyour market

2-3 fresh garlic gloves2 cups canned chickpeas (garbanzo

beans), drained 2 tablespoons of water or liquid

from drained chickpeas1 teaspoon saltHere's the fun:Let your child roll the lemon back and

forth on the counter to get the juicesflowing. Cut it in half and squeeze it on amanual juicer. Pour a quarter of a cup ofthe juice into a blender.

Pour in the oil, and add the tahini. It's garlic time. Pop out a nice big

clove from the bulb. Press a spatuladown hard on the clove, and give it amajor whack! Peel off the garlic skin, roughly chop the garlic and drop it intothe blender. Add another clove or twoaccording to taste.

Toss in the drained chickpeas, wateror liquid from chickpeas and salt, thengive everything a spin until smooth.

Serve with warmed pita bread. Makesabout 2 cups

Extra Tips:•Use as a dip for crisp vegetables and

spread on sandwiches as a replacementfor mayonnaise or butter.

•Add a 1/2 teaspoon of cumin for adifferent flavor.

Budding aquarium enthusiasts crop upevery day. They're anxious to head to thepet store and pick out a tank, accessoriesand the fish they hope will thrive in anew environment.

While it's important to know whichfish can cohabitate and the proper pHand temperature to keep the tank, oneimportant lesson all people who have anaquarium should know is how to keepalgae in check.

Algae is a naturally occurring plantlife that creates a green film on the insideof tank walls and on plants and decora-tions inside the aquarium. Just like anyother plant, algae requires a few things tothrive, including light, water and food.

Although a certain amount of algae inthe water can be a beneficial food sourcefor some species of fish, an overabun-dance can be unsightly and take over theaquarium.

There are a few reasons why algae cangrow unchecked.

•Algae needs light to survive. Leavinga fluorescent aquarium light on too longor placing the tank in the path of directsunlight can cause algae to bloom.

•Introducing new live plants to a tank, which already may have algae sporeshitching a ride on them, can introducemore algae to the tank.

•Overfeeding fish can provide extrafood sources for algae, as can failing tofrequently clean the filter.

•Water with a high level of nutrientswill provide a lot of food for algae.

Understanding why algae forms willhelp you control it effectively. To start, get in the habit of cleaning the tank fre-quently. Once a week may be acceptable, depending on size. Scrape the walls ofthe aquarium down and remove the artifi-cial plants and other accessories and rou-tinely wash in clean water. Change thefilter cartridge when it has become over-

ly soiled.Perform water changes. Change 10 to

15 percent of the water in the aquariumevery week, which will remove toxinsand algae spores. When you change thewater, use a suction tube to "vacuum" outdebris lodged in the gravel.

Limiting the food sources for algaecan also keep it in check. Feed a scantamount of food to fish, only enough thatthey can eat in 5 minutes or so. If there isextra food floating around, remove it.The food contains phosphates and othernutrients that can be a delicious meal foralgae. Keeping live plants in the tank isanother way to limit nutrients. Liveplants will use many of the nutrients thatalgae thrive on. Having less presentmeans less algae and healthy aquariumplants.

Routinely test the levels in the waterand know what the proper levels shouldbe. In addition, know what your waterlevels are right out of the tap. Test forphosphates and nitrates. Use phosphateremovers or another water source, if nec-essary.

Make sure to include algae-eating fishin the aquarium. Those like thePlecostomus (Pleco) will scour the tankfor algae.

Position the tank out of direct sun-light, which will just fuel algae growth. Also, go sparingly on the use of anaquarium light in the tank.

Algae often grow in warm tempera-tures, as is common with tropical aquari-ums. Keep the temperature of the waterat the minimum level allowed for thebreed of fish, and be sure the tank is notby a radiator or additional heat source.

Keeping aquarium fish can be anenjoyable hobby and a nice focal pointfor a room. To ensure the health of thetank, be sure to manage the amount ofalgae in the aquarium.

Spending a day on the water canequate to paradise for the millions ofpeople who enjoy recreational fishing. While fishing is a source of income forcountless people, many others view fish-ing as a recreational retreat.

The American SportfishingAssociation reports that there wereroughly 40 million Americans whoenjoyed angling in 2008. In Canada, there were more than 3 million peoplewho registered for fishing licenses in2005 (Editor's note: Both numbers arethe most recent statistics available.) TheNational Sporting Goods Associationranks fishing sixth out of 42 recreationactivities in terms of its popularity, pre-ceded only by walking, swimming, exer-cising, camping and bowling. The high-est concentration of anglers can be foundin the state of Florida.

The mass number of fishing hobbyistsspend millions of dollars on equipmentand gear for their fishing excursions eachyear. With so much money being spent, itis essential to properly care for gear andstore it well. Here's how to get started.

Safety: There are many componentsof fishing gear that can be dangerous inthe wrong hands. From fileting knives tobait hooks, there is the potential forinjury should young children get into thefishing equipment you have. Also, sinkers made out of lead can be toxicshould children put these items in theirmouths.

Emphasize safety when storing yourequipment. If you are keeping rods andreels on your boat, be sure they're in alocked cargo area so they're not easilyaccessible. If tackle and other gear iskept at home, be sure to have a lockedcabinet where it can be kept, or place ithigh enough where it is out of reach.

Make sure sharp lures and hooks arekept together in a tackle box and placedout of the way. Not only will this keeppeople safe, but it also helps to keep gear

organized.Cleaning: In order to work properly,

gear should be cleaned and inspectedprior to storage. Cleaning will also pro-long the life span of fishing equipment.Fishing rods should be wiped down aftereach fishing trip to prevent harmful con-taminants and corrosives from eatingaway at the clear coat on the rod and anymetal components. Wiping down alsoreduces the chance of salt water corro-sion.

In terms of cleaning lures and tackle, start out by soaking them in distilledwater. If there is a smell or debris stuckon it, some people have used a spray likeWD40 with success. If using a soap-based cleanser on soft rubber lures, choose one that is gentle, like baby soapsor even gentle laundry detergent. Just besure to rinse well.

Rod storage: It is important to storefishing rods horizontally to prevent warp-ing or bending. If using a rack speciallydesigned for fishing rods, it will keeprods straight despite them being storedvertically.
