YOUR ONE STOP AUTO REPAIR & TOWING SERVICE

Clean autofor spring

Spring cleaning is a term most of ushave heard. It means that you have spentthe winter stuck inside, letting the dust pileup and the dirt get ground into the carpet, and now it's time to clean up. But, there isanother place where you spend a lot oftime that gets even dirtier than you home-your vehicle. Vehicles take the punishmentof winter on both the inside and the out-side.

The weather can be tough on your vehi-cle in the winter, and by the time springrolls around, it needs more than a runthrough the automatic car wash. Yourvehicle deserves the hands-on approach. The soap you use to wash your car can beordinary dishwashing liquid or specialsoap designed especially for washing vehi-cles. The point is, roll up your sleeves andgive it a good wash. Start on the roof andwork your way out. Wash everything-getthe tires and side view mirrors, get theheadlights and the bumper, get every inchof the vehicle.

Once the outside is done, it's time tack-le the interior. For many people, the car iswhere they spend a good part of theirwork day, and it shows. For some people, the vehicle is used to transport kids toschool and activities, and it shows. Startwith a garbage bag and collect all thecups, fast food containers, pens, businesscards, half eaten doughnuts, last week'sspelling test, action figures, soda cans andthe garage door opener that you yelled atyour spouse for losing.

After the garbage and stuff is collected, pull out the floor mats and plug in the vac-uum. Try to get the big stuff like paper-clips and French fries by hand, then startsucking up the rest. Don't forget behindand under the seats as well. If you are likemost people, you'll probably find an aver-age of $3 in change.

Next, clean the seats, dashboard, doorsand console. If the seats are vinyl orleather, many different types of cleanerscan be used. If it is fabric, you will need agood upholstery cleaner. A nice way to topoff a good interior cleaning is with an airfreshener.

Returning to the outside of the vehicle, there are many products available to cleanyour tires. These products will give yourtires a wet and shiny look.

Finally, you may consider waxing orpolishing your vehicle. Waxing a car is inessence adding a layer of protection.Waxing will add shine to the car and giveit that wet look, but it will also protect thecar from the elements and ultraviolet light. When you polish a car, you are cleaning it.Polishing eliminates scratches, rust, dirtand wax. It contains abrasives that actuallyremove a thin layer of the car's paint.Polishing also brings out the color andadds shine. Follow the directions on thebottle when waxing or polishing.

Spring is good time to start drivingfresh and clean. Clean your vehicle nowand make room for beach balls, flip flops, lawn chairs and coolers later.

Spring driving safety tipsYou survived winter, and now that spring has sprung,

you think you have it made. Wrong. Spring showersbring more than May flowers; they also bring treacher-ous driving conditions. From rain to fog, construction towildlife, spring has its share of driving obstacles.

Spring can bring torrential rain and flooded roads. The dangers of these are obvious. Excessive speed on adrenched road can cause your vehicle to hydroplane.Hydroplaning occurs when the vehicle loses traction andslides like a sled over snow. Also, keep an eye out forpotholes. If a pothole is filled with water, you cannotjudge how deep it is. Going through a pothole at highspeed can cause damage to your vehicle as well as causeyou to lose control. It is also important to watch for pud-dles of water along the side of the road. While it was funjumping in puddles as a kid, it can be dangerous to drivethrough them as an adult. If you have ever driventhrough a puddle, you know how it can completely shiftyour vehicle and send you spinning to regain control.

Another danger from Mother Nature is fog. As tem-peratures rise, fog can form over ground which is cooler.Fog restricts or completely eliminates visibility. Themost important rule for driving in fog is to SLOW

DOWN. You must be able to stop within your sight dis-tance. Be sure to slow down BEFORE you enter the fog,not after. Keep your low beam headlights on in the fogand don't hesitate to put on your hazard light. The key todriving in fog is to be seen.

Whether you are driving in rain or fog, it is importantto keep a safe distance between your car and others onthe road. A good rule of thumb is the two-second rule.As a vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object, begin counting. At least two seconds should pass beforeyou pass the same object. Keeping a two-second dis-tance is always a good idea, but it is especially importantin inclement weather.

Warmer weather also brings road construction. Theorange barrels will be out, so take special care to givethe road crew the space they need. Observe all construc-tion speed limits and be prepared for delays. Pay atten-tion and don’t wait until the last minute to mergeinto one lane.

Spring means the flowers are blooming and animalsare being born. Deer and other wildlife will be out andabout and running into roadways. Animals tend to runinto traffic, not away from it. Keep an eye out andreduce your speed in areas animals are known to habitat.

Winter may be over, but spring brings its own drivingrisks. Stay vigilant as you drive your way into summer.

Electric car problemsElectric cars are poised to take over the automotive

market in the near future. Their ability to reduce depend-ence on fossil fuels and their high MPG ratings placeelectric and hybrid cars at the top of the list for environ-mentally friendly vehicles. However, one caveat is thatelectric cars may disturb the distribution of electric power.

Experts warn that electric cars may drain the powergrid at the local level if their popularity catches on.

The average electric car requires roughly the sameamount of electrical power that a small house might con-sume. Because the popularity of electric cars is expectedto increase in concentrated geographic locations, therecould be heavy demand on already overly taxed trans-formers. It's a very real possibility that a high concentra-tion of electric cars in a given area may cause power out-ages.

Most car owners would plug in electric cars at nightwhen demand is generally less. Still, experts warn that thecurrent power grid may not be up to the task of handlingthe widespread use of electric cars. Research is still under-way to determine what would need to be done to create asmarter power grid, one up for the challenge of handlingincreased use of electric cars.

Taking care of your tires

Install an alarm system for protection

The weather is warmer and it's time tosee how your vehicle survived the winter.Spring is a great time to make thoserepairs, check those fluid levels and seehow the winter has treated your tires. Yourtires are something you can check andmaintain, even if you aren't mechanicallyinclined.

The first thing to do is check the pres-sure. You should do this every couple ofweeks and before road trips. If you don'tcheck your tire pressure on a regular basis, spring is a good time to start.

First, you need to determine the recom-mended PSI (pounds per square inch) forthe tire. This can be found on the tire or inthe owner's manual. To check the pressure, you will need a tire gauge. Most pressuregauges you can buy today are digital andeasy to read. Unscrew the cap on the tirestem and put on the pressure gauge. If itreads "35 psi," that means the tire requires35 pounds of pressure per square inch.

If air is needed to reach the recommendPSI, add air to the tire until you reach thatnumber...BUT DON'T OVER INFLATEIT. Under inflated tires have greater fric-tion with the road, which causes your vehi-cle to work harder. A vehicle that worksharder uses more gas and costs moremoney.

Next, check your tires for wear; a worn

tire is smooth. Hopefully, your tires are notcompletely bald. But, if they do still havesome tread, is it enough? A way to checkwear is to reach into your pocket, take outa penny and place it into the tire's groove, with Lincoln's head upside down and fac-ing toward you. If you can see the top of"honest Abe's" head, it's time to go shop-ping for new tires.

The way you drive affects your tires. Toensure they last as long as possible, keepthese things in mind. Driving at highspeeds generates heat and will reduce thelife of the tread. It's also important to con-sider what you encounter on the road.Avoid going over potholes and hittingcurbs when you turn. Also keep an eye outfor road kill. They may already be flat-tened, but don't run over those unfortunatecritters.

Another way to extend the life of yourtires is to rotate them. By rotating yourtires, you allow them to wear more evenly.A good rule of thumb is to have themrotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.

Spring means the flowers are bloomingand the weather is warmer. Take the timeto make sure your vehicle is operating atits peak. By taking care of your tires, youcan make sure it runs its best from theground up.

The second-most expensive investmentmost people make is their vehicle. No onelikes to watch their investment go downthe drain, but according to the FBIUniform Crime Report, a vehicle is stolenevery 21 seconds. The number one proper-ty crime in the United States is vehicletheft, costing consumers about $7.8 billiona year. While almost 62% of the stolenvehicles are recovered, the rest are shippedoverseas to sell on the black market, sentto chop shops where their parts are sold orinstalled, or resold to unsuspecting individ-uals. Vehicle theft translates into big busi-ness. Fortunately, it can be prevented witha few precautions and anti-theft devices.

Your first line of defense is to park yourvehicle in a well-lit area, take your keysout of the ignition, close your windowsand sunroof completely, and lock yourdoors. In some cases, this is not enough todeter a thief and more extensive measuresmust be taken, such as installing a caralarm and using anti-theft devices.

When selecting an alarm, make sure itsfeatures match those of your vehicle. If

you don't have power lock doors, don'tpurchase an alarm that relies upon this fea-ture. Look for an alarm from a major man-ufacturer with dealers nearby in case youhave problems. Ask about the manufactur-er's warranty as well as the shop whereyou will have the alarm installed. Makesure you know how everything on the sys-tem works and do a test run after installa-tion to ensure everything works.

Vehicle anti-theft devices run the gam-bit from audible alarms to electronicimmobilizers or kill switches to trackingdevices. On the low-tech end, you can trysteering wheel locks, steering column col-lars, wheel locks, window decals or win-dow etching. On the high-tech end, youcan try a number of vehicle immobilizersranging from smart keys with computerchips to starter and fuel disablers. Becausean ignition immobilizer is linked to yourvehicle's electrical system, make sure youhave it installed by a professional who willguarantee their work. For the ultimate anti-theft device, there is a tracking system thatemits a signal that is transmitted to the

police or a monitoring service. This typeof system can lead to a speedier recoveryof a vehicle.

When deciding what type of device tobuy, consider where you park your vehi-cle, what level of protection you need andmore importantly, how effective your anti-theft device will be. If someone wants tosteal a vehicle bad enough, a simple alarmcan be shut off and a steering wheel collarcan be sliced.

Some manufacturers etch their vehicle'sparts with a Vehicle Identification Number(VIN). To find out if your vehicle has thisfeature, log on to the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration site.

No one wants to think that a crimecould happen to them, but with statisticsbeing what they are, why take a chance onbecoming a victim of vehicle theft. Takethe steps necessary to protect your vehicle.

GPS usage tipsGPS devices have made paper maps

obsolete for many people. While GPSdevices can be very convenient, espe-cially on road trips, there are some tipsto keep in mind.

•Place the GPSdevice where it won'tobstruct your vision or take your eyesoff of the road for a good deal of time.

•Don't treat the GPS as if it is infal-lible. Even with map updates and otheraccessories, a GPS can still make mis-takes. Use common sense, especiallywhere it would seem the GPS is guid-ing you in the wrong way.

•Do not play with the controls whileoperating the car. If you need to adjustsomething on the GPS, do so only afterpulling over to a safe area.

•Have a general idea where you aregoing so you'll know if the GPS ispotentially guiding you in the wrongdirection and can maneuver in advance.

Oil lubricates engineIt lubricates a vehicle's engine. It cools

a vehicle's engine. It cleans a vehicle'sengine. It is motor oil, and without it, anengine could not run. It is as important toyour vehicle as it was to the Tin Man inThe Wizard of Oz.

Motor oil performs five basic functionsin a vehicle's engine. It creates a protectivefilm on engine parts to enable them tomove freely. It acts as a cushion betweenmetal engine parts to prevent wear. Itmoves excess heat from the combustionarea to the oil pan to keep the engine cool.It works as a sealant between the pistonrings and cylinder walls to stop blow-byand power loss. Finally, it suspends con-taminants and neutralizes acids to protectthe engine from becoming encrusted withharmful deposits.

A vital component of a vehicle's engine, motor oil is available in three forms: con-ventional, synthetic blend and synthetic. The least expensive of the three, conven-tional oil comes from the ground and isrefined and blended with additives. A com-bination of conventional and synthetic oil, synthetic blend is more expensive thanconventional oil and works best for vehi-cles used for heavier work. Of the three, synthetic oil is the most expensive, butbecause it is manmade, it tends to pene-trate an engine better, leaving fewerdeposits and offering greater high-temper-ature resistance and low-temperature flow.

To find out what type of motor oil youshould use in your vehicle, consult theowner's manual. In general, you shouldchange the oil approximately every 3,000miles or three months. Depending uponyour know-how, you can either change theoil yourself or have it done by a profes-sional. As your vehicle ages, gaps betweenengine parts may become larger and thick-er oil may be needed. A service center willbe able to advise you on this.

Of course, even with regular oilchanges, the engine light may come on. Inthe event that it does, follow these steps:

1. Pull over and turn off the engine.2. Switch on the hazard lights and open

the hood.3. Check the oil and add some if need-

ed.4. Restart the engine and check to see if

the engine light is off.5. Call a tow truck if the light is still on

or go about your way if the light is off andcheck the oil frequently in the next fewdays to make sure there is not a leak.

Motor oil kept the Tin Man moving andit will keep your vehicle moving, as longas you use it properly and change it regu-larly. Consult your owner's manual andfollow the recommendations listed regard-ing the use of motor oil. Keep your vehiclehappy and running well!

Don’t neglect serviceFrequently neglected items include oil

changes, tire and brake service, wheelalignment, air and fuel filters, and trans-mission service, according to ASE-certi-fied auto technicians.

Besides, a well-maintained vehicle getsbetter gasoline mileage, pollutes less, issafer to operate, and lasts longer than onethat's neglected, notes ASE.

To help consumers choose a repair shopthat fits their needs, ASE offers the follow-ing checklist:

•Look for a neat, well-organized facili-ty, with vehicles in the parking lot equal invalue to your own and modern equipmentin the service bays.

•Look for policies regarding estimatedrepair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment.

•Look for signs of professionalism inthe customer service area, such as civic, community, or customer service awards.

•Look for evidence of qualified techni-cians: trade school diplomas, certificates ofadvanced course work.

•Look for the ASE sign or logo; itmeans the shop employs nationally certi-fied technicians.

Ways to improve your mpgThe economy might be slowly recover-

ing, but saving money is still foremost onthe minds of many people. Men andwomen have looked to save money in avariety of ways, including at the gas pump. While there's little drvivers can do toreduce the cost of a gallon of gas, there areways they can make the gas last a littlelonger.

Improving fuel economy is nothingnew to many motorists, but some mightstill be surprised at the myriad ways theycan get more bang for their buck withregards to fuel costs.

•Don't break the law. Obeying thespeed limit might save your life, and it canalso save you money. Typically, fuel econ-omy decreases rapidly as a car reaches andsurpasses 60 miles per hour. According tothe U.S. Department of Safety, drivers canassume that each five miles per hour theydrive over 60, they are paying an addition-al $0.26 per gallon for gas.

•Empty the trunk. Though it might bemore convenient to keep your golf clubs inthe trunk of your car, extra and unneces-sary cargo in a vehicle's trunk drasticallyreduces fuel economy. An extra 100pounds in a vehicle can reduce miles pergallon by as much as 2 percent, so keep atrunk free of items that aren't absolutelynecessary.

•Stop idling. Many people let their caridle for several minutes on cold mornings. But today's newer vehicles don't reallyneed to idle to warm up, and idling can bevery taxing on fuel economy. Dependingon the size of the car, idling can usebetween a quarter to a half gallon of fuelper hour. If you still insist on letting thevehicle idle, a few seconds of idlingshould be enough to warm the engine up.

•Embrace cruise control on long driveswithout lots of stopping and starting.Maintaining a constant speed, which avehicle does when drivers utilize cruisecontrol, can help save fuel, as it's less tax-ing on an engine to continue at one speed

then it is to constantly switch back andforth between high and low speeds.

•Inflate the tires. Poorly inflated tireslower gas mileage and also pose a safetyhazard. The DOE notes that properlyinflated tires can improve gas mileage byas much as 3 percent. Ideal tire pressure isdifferent for each vehicle, so check yourvehicle's owner's manual for recommendedtire pressure. Some vehicle manufacturersalso include the recommended tire pres-sure on the vehicle itself, be it in the dri-ver's side door jamb or in the vehicle'sglove compartment. Tire pressure printedon the tire's sidewall might not be the idealtire inflation for your particular vehicle, soalways adhere to the manufacturer's rec-ommendation instead.

•Drive the car you need, not the caryou want. Drivers who truly need to savemoney at the pump should consider thetype of vehicle they're driving, andwhether it's the car they need or the carthey want.

Improving fuel efficiency is a great wayfor motorists to save money and reduce theexpenses associated with vehicle owner-ship.

Spring check list• Wash and wax the exterior, being

extra careful to remove any salt build-upfrom the wheel wells and underbody.

• Dust the interior and apply protectantto any surfaces susceptible to sun damage.

• Clean the upholstery and carpet.• Inspect all belts and hoses and replace

any that need it.• Change the oil and filter.• Top off any fluids that may have been

used during the winter.• Replace windshield wiper blades.• Get a tune-up if needed and have the

brakes inspected by a professional.• Update the emergency roadside kit.

By Angela Shelf MedearisOf all the things to love about almonds, this one should really get your heart pump-

ing: Just a handful of almonds a day could help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. That's good news for just about everyone, as cardiovascular disease holds its spot asthe leading cause of death among men and women in the U.S. Research shows that adiet high in heart-healthy foods like almonds can reduce cholesterol levels as muchstatin drugs like lovastatin and mevastatin.

Almonds also are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidantthat helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. A study published in the June2005 Journal of Nutrition showed that consuming whole almonds, including the skin, doubles the antioxidant intake.

Just 1 ounce (22 almonds) packs more protein than an egg and more than 3 gramsof dietary fiber. This same portion of almonds provides about 160 calories and the highprotein content staves off hunger. Almonds also are a rich source of riboflavin, magne-sium, manganese and copper.

Shelled almonds may be whole, sliced or slivered with skin on, or blanched withthe skin removed. Look for dry-roasted almonds that contain no additional ingredientslike sugar or preservatives. Store them in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry placeto prevent them from going rancid and absorbing odors of other foods. Almonds willlast several months in the refrigerator and up to a year frozen.

This heart-healthy recipe for Savory Almond and Cheese Straws makes an excellentsnack and is a great way to incorporate almonds into yourdiet.

Savory Almond and Cheese Straws1 pound puff pastry dough1 egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water3/4 cup grated dry cheese, such as Parmesan or

aged Gouda3/4 cup almonds, choppedFlour for dusting1. Thaw pastry overnight in refrigerator or 40 minutes

at room temperature. Unfold pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. With the shorterside facing you, roll out each sheet to 12 by 12 inches. Cut each sheet in half, length-wise.

2. Brush dough with egg mix and sprinkle with an even coating of cheese andalmonds. With a rolling pin, lightly press the mixture into the dough. Cut each halfcrosswise into 3/4-inch strips. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets and refrigeratefor 30 minutes before baking.

3. Bake at 400 F, 9 to 10 minutes, or until light brown and crisp. Makes about 96straws.

Strange, but trueBy Samantha Weaver

It was British doctor and author AlecBourne who made the following sageobservation: "It is possible to store themind with a million facts and still beentirely uneducated."

Have you ever heard of a book called"Never Again" by Doug Nufer? Probablynot - it's not on any bestseller lists and has-n't been reviewed by any notable critics. It's quite possibly unique in literary histo-ry, however; in its entire 192 pages, not asingle word - even basic words such as a,an, the, of and for - is used twice.

If you were to stack up a million $1bills, they would weigh about one ton.

The Twist dance craze in the 1960schanged the culture in America and spreadaround the world. Most people don't real-ize, though, that the song "The Twist,"which started the fad, wasn't originallysung by Chubby Checker, though he wasthe one who sent the single up the charts

and has since been irrevocably associatedwith the dance. The song was originallywritten and performed by an R&B singernamed Hank Ballard. A deejay inBaltimore saw teenagers dancing toBallard's song and called Dick Clark, hostof "American Bandstand." Clark loved itand invited Ballard to perform the song onthe show, but it didn't work out. Instead,Clark found someone else to perform thesong: Ernest Evans, who changed hisname to Chubby Checker. It made hiscareer.

HOCUS - FOCUS

Try this tip: It's tough to eat home-cooked meals as a single eater - mostrecipes are geared for multiple portions, and you probably don't want to eat the samething for five days straight. Try this: Get together with some friends and have apotluck. Each guest brings an entree and at least two side dishes, in extra-large por-tions, and his or her own leftovers containers. Split the food up amongst the guests, packaged as meals. Everyone can cook once and eat for a week.
