2Edith Schaffer Lederberg

Executive Director

For over twenty years, Edith Lederberg has appreciated the dedication and caring of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler (l). Tamarac Mayor Harry Dressler joined the duo for some informal conversation prior to the start of the Installation Dinner Program in January.

SunTrust demonstrates its loyalty to over 394,180 seniors by making a contribution to the Aging and Disability Resource Center. From (l): Bridget Christie Jeffries, First Vice President; Natasha Elfarghali, Finance Director, ADRC; and David K. Ross, Senior Vice President.

May is Older Americans' Month and a time to recognize the achievements as well as the needs of a population that helped build our great Nation, as well as survived the embattlement of wars that sought to destroy our democracy along with the principles we cherish.

In the early 1940's, when we were growing up in a small town on Long Island, our tranquility suddenly was shaken by the radio news that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. The entire school membership crowded into an auditorium to hear then President Franklin Roosevelt seek a declaration of war. Lives changed overnight! Our Mother soon joined the work force; soap became a scarce commodity; and gas, shortages, along with the rationing of certain foods, became a reality.

Young men were drafted, and some, eager to serve, enlisted, as did women, who sensed that they, too had an obligation to aid their country. Religious services, too often, included memorials to those, who never would come home again. Once the strife settled, the majority returned, and soon, housing developments, like Levittown, enveloped what once was farmland where corn and cabbage reigned supreme! Prosperity became available to those who were diligent, and education was the emblem for the eager. The advent of television brought the entire family to the living room for costs were high for the screened magnet, and its existence soon became a necessity.

Several additional wars beset our county, and our young men and women donned uniforms in response to a call for enlisting. However, their return, for the most part, did not receive the praise or assistance merited. As a result, many now are reaching the senior stage of life disheartened, needy, and seeking emotional assistance. Rather than placing sufficient focus on serving the young elders and the older old, society persists in stressing youth, the computer, and internet connectivity.

In May, which is Older Americans Month, we should, and will take the time to honor outstanding older men and women, who have volunteered their time and talents to Broward County. Our prime purposes are to alert and educate the populace about the blessing most elders are to humanity. At the same time, we are pledged never to forger to remember that those, who are experiencing the gradual sunset of their lives, merit the right to experience and enjoy the warmth of sunshine and happiness in a safe, secure, and exemplary environment.

Earnest Eyes Envelop Environment

During the Installation Dinner, the Presidential Couple, Dr. William Rand and his wife, Deborah were congratulated by their son (l), Dr. David Rand, and daughter (r), Dr. Allison Rand who shared in their mother’s celebration as the new Board President. Mrs. Rand chose her husband to install the new officers.

Being President of a nonprofit board is a complex and creative challenge! The office invites considerable creativity and cooperative compatibility. Following eleven years of membership on the Areawide Council, I am honored to be in the leadership role.

As I consider the paucity of governmental funding, to meet the multiple needs of a percentage of Broward’s 394,180 year-round senior residents, my commitment toward advocating for both greater awareness campaigns, and generating increased corporate involvement, magnifies. Too little attention is paid to the facts that the “older old” population merits assistance, and caregivers may be seniors, who also are frail, or other family members, who may have major responsibilities with their own children and/or grand.

There are many foundations that aid elders, but some benevolent groups specifically exclude senior organizations from applying. The focus is on youth, and the future, with little emphasis on providing financial sustenance to nourish the needs of Older Americans. I hope that these referenced bodies, along with positive attention from both Tallahassee and Washington, shine with greater light on programs addressing the problems of people in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 100’s.

Vision is a sense that enables humanity to view the environment within set perimeters, but the meaning also has been extended to include the foresight to predict the future with anticipated accuracy. I invite others to join my personal quest for successful solutions to problems experienced by elders seeking to remain independent in their accustomed environments. As partners, we can, and will respond positively to their prayers, for they are our inspiration from yesterday and we are their hope for tomorrow.

At the beginning of December in 1990, a well written resume appeared on our desk. We were impressed

by the contents since our nonprofit organization just had absorbed the Senior Information and Referral Program, and as a result, we were seeking qualified personnel to help provide assistance to callers, seeking mechanisms for resolving their problems, or wanting data regarding available programs and service. When January, 1991 arrived, the gift of Carmen Nilda Urbistondo came into our lives with a perpetual smile, an enjoyable wit, and an extremely serious commitment to seniors.

Nilda’s role on Staff rose from Specialist to Acting Director, and then to Helpline Director because of her abilities and an evidenced need to provide bilingual access for callers and visitors. Following Hurricane Andrew, a large number of Spanish speaking clients gifted Broward with their presence, and Mrs. Urbistondo helped create a brochure that would meet their needs. (She often would say that we spoke the King’s Spanish which was beautiful but not utilized by most local Hispanics. That ended this language major’s direct involvement with translating the informational item!)

Nilda’s natural beauty, augmented by her caring heart, attracted, as well as maintained a fine Staff. When computers “took over the world,” she endeavored to maintain pace with novel mechanisms as well as train personnel who had the appropriate skills but had to be educated regarding human interests, the patience to respond to infinite questions, and above all, the optimal ways to link callers to a “one stop shopping” plan that too often had a limited stock of services available.

Throughout the years, until the present day, Nilda Urbistondo has coped with all emergencies, funding issues, and sometimes political requests, in a calm, cool, and collected manner. As she retires to travel with her Husband, spend more time with her children, and enjoy the peace of many magnificent days of leisure, we wish our friend all the blessings life has to offer.

Vaya con Dios mi amiga! Te amo para siempre y más.
