A partnership between two voluntary
sector organisations has helped to provide
support for a Doncaster community
through funding from the governments
Active at 60 initiative. Rotherham based
charity Active Regen & Area51, the Sprotbrough
skate park user group, raised funds to deliver a
programme of activities for residents in the
area. Activities were provided at Clifton Court
Care Home and Don View Care Home for
older people & adults with learning difficulties.
Active Regen supplied trained coaches to
deliver a programme called “Virtual to Reality”.
The programme uses virtual sports software
such as Kinect & Wii Sports and a series of real
life sports & physical activities to help improve
mobility & coordination. Active Regen‟s Gary
Whitaker said” The Virtual to Reality
programme has proved very popular with this
client group. They have the opportunity to use IT in an innovative way. The activity has also
given the young people on our apprenticeship
programme an experience of working with
older people & adults with a disability
which they have really enjoyed.” Chairman of
Area51 Steve Gratton said: “It is fantastic to see
the success of the Active at 60 programme. We
work hard to provide top class wheeled sports
activities, including Skateboarding, BMXing,
Scootering and Rollerblading, for the young
people of Doncaster, but it has been great to
have the chance to reach out to the older
generation too. We have some amazing riders
in Doncaster, and we would love to see more
people come down and watch what these guys
are capable of at our park in Sprotbrough”.
Following this success of this initiative, Active
Regen is hoping to raise additional funding to
extend the programme.

THE DON GORGE
Since reporting our concerns about the new
proposal for the Fish Pass and Small Hydro Scheme
at Lower Sprotborough in December, no further
information has been received. A recent meeting
of the Don Gorge Strategic Partnership reported
that no plans have yet been submitted and, until
they are, we are unable to make our feelings
known.
In the meantime, the Community Group has been
trying to make progress on the parking problem.
There are two possibilities, both on the left-hand
side going up Nursery Lane.
One site, near the small pond, is owned by about
twenty different people, all of whom have to be
contacted before it can be used as a car park. So
far their reactions have been fairly positive. If this
was agreed, there is a good chance that our
volunteers could do most of the work necessary,
though it would need fencing and gating. A
woodland walk could be created to enable safe
access to the riverside.
The other possibility is a small piece of land just
beyond the Boat Inn car park. Lafarge have
donated this land for the purpose of car parking,
but more work would probably be needed to make
this site usable.
We feel it is essential that more parking is
provided as the visitor rate is increasing year on
year and the environment is being spoiled in the
process, with grass verges broken down, etc, but
of course visitors would have to be willing to use
these new sites even though they might be a little
further away. It is noticeable when visiting other
heritage sites that local authorities have co-
operated to enforce specific parking areas by
implementing parking restrictions and this may also
be necessary.
The current closure of the hairpin bend and Mill
Lane has been proving difficult for those who
usually travel to Warmsworth across the River
Don at this point, but progress is being made and
hopefully all will be back to normal by the time you
are reading this. Certainly, the work was
necessary and the footpath, which was in dire need
of repair, will be a vast improvement for walkers.
Just a remainder that we now have a Blog where
items relating to the Don Gorge are published on a
regular basis.

nity Group

Thank
You My Brother, Neil died following a
3 and a half year battle with
Leukaemia, aged 26. He was a
Sprotbrough boy, born and bred
and his life was just beginning to
go somewhere, he had been in
the RAF for 18 months up to his
diagnosis and was really enjoying
life.
During his illness and since his death, we have been raising money for a specialist Teenage and Young
Adult Cancer Unit located at the Sheffield Royal Hallamshire Hospital, after Neil and a fellow patient, Sam,
championed the idea. Neil was being treated for Leukaemia on a mixed Haematology Ward which wasn't
ideal. He had seen a specialist Teenage and Young Persons Cancer Unit at Weston Park and thought it
would be a good idea to have the same facility at the Hallamshire.
Anyway, to cut a very long story short, we have been holding the annual cricket sixes event in August of
each year at the Sprotbrough Ivanhoe, to raise the funds for this project . We have decided as a family
that we will no longer be holding this event. Neil's wish has been achieved and the unit is excellent, he
would have been very pleased with it. We would like to say a big thank you from the bottom of our
hearts, for all the time his friends have invested in this project and the generosity of everyone in
Sprotbrough over the last few years. As you can see from the photographs, the day room is really nicely
furnished and has lots of facilities, such as a TV, Laptops, XBox, Wii, Music Centre, CD's and DVD's
galore and more importantly, it's somewhere that young cancer patients can get away from their hospital
bed and relax.
We can all be satisfied that Neil and Sam got their wish, even though they were aware that it probably
wouldn't benefit them, they knew that it would benefit other young people, trying to get through their
treatment, with the comfort that they deserve.
We would particularly like to thank the
staff at the Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe Cricket Club,
Rob Johnson, Jon French, Jody Green and
Neil's friends from the Sprotbrough
Cricket teams and the RAF. Thanks
to everyone who donated some fantastic
prizes for our raffles, including Adrian
Welch, who has been very generous.
Thanks to everyone who turned up,
donated and made the day so brilliant.
If you would like to continue to make
donations in memory of Neil, we would
recommend that you donate to Teenage
Cancer Trust, who do a wonderful job.
Lynn Gardiner

Olympic Torch Route
The Olympic Torch will pass through Doncaster on Tuesday
26th June on it‟s way from Sheffield to Cleethorpes.
The route starts at Connisbrough and works it‟s way through
Doncaster towards Hatfield.
Torch Bearers will share the task of running through
Doncaster and many schools and businesses will be involved
in this historic moment. Many thousands will be expected to
line the route to catch a glimpse of the famous torch. Many
people have asked „what happens if the flame goes out?‟
Apparently this had happened many times before and it is
simply re-lit! The torch has travelled in the past both in air
and under water and remained alight.
Below is a copy of the proposed route on Tuesday 26th
June 2012. Let‟s hope the flame burns brightly for
Doncaster!
The London 2012 Olympic Torch designed by
Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, 8000 have been produced in readiness for the games.
