The West Orange Chamber of Commerce exists to serve by “FACILITATING OPPORTUNITY”
April 2011
It just keeps getting better! Of course, I am referring to “Best Fest” – The Taste of West Orange. Beginning with the weather (blue skies), to Health Central’s fi rst class presentation as our Title sponsor, down to the scrumptious samples of food from over 30 food vendors and the spectacular presentations by our businesses, we could not have asked for anything more. This fi rst class event exemplifi ed the ability of the Chamber to facilitate opportunity for our members with one another and to the community. Allowing sampling of a product is one of the best forms of marketing and there is no better venue for this than Best Fest.
I can personally attest to the great samples provided by all. I did my best to get to all the booths and I cast my ballot for my favorites. My votes combined with the crowd of over 1,200, determined this year’s winners of Best Food – Fleming’s Steakhouse and Wine Bar, Best Dessert – Cake in the City and Best Decorated Booth – Hagan O’Reilly’s Irish Pub and Restaurant.
Thanks to all the vendors, you are all winners for participating in this event. Special thanks to all of our Best Fest sponsors beginning with Health Central, BlueCross Blue Shield of Florida, CenturyLink, Neuro Spine Institute, Winter Garden Village at Fowler Groves, Nelson’s Tents & Events, Alarie Design Associates, Central Florida Lifestyle Magazine, Southwest Orlando Bulletin, Best Cleaners and West Oaks Mall. I would also like to personally thank all our volunteers’, you are very much appreciated.
Wednesday, April 24th is Administrative Professionals Day. Use this as an opportunity to take advantage of the many Chamber businesses to treat your admin on their special day. Maybe you would like to take them out to lunch, or order a bouquet of fl owers or cookies or buy a gift. If so, make sure you use a Chamber member for your purchases, whatever they may be and make it easy on yourself by using the Chamber online directory at www.wochamber.com or our Discover magazine to assist you in making your decisions.
As always, the Chamber is on to its next event offering opportunities for our members. The Orange County Mayor and Commissioners Luncheon sponsored by the University of Central Florida and Walt Disney World is scheduled for Thursday, May 12th at St. Pauls Family Life Center. This year will be very exciting because of the practically new make up of the commission from our last luncheon. For those of you who are intrigued by politics or just want to learn the latest from our county leaders, this event is meant for you. Check out the chamber calendar on www.wochamber.com for details.
While you are browsing our Web site, take a minute to visit the Facilitating Opportunity page and give the board members and me your feedback on how we can make this Chamber work even better for your business.

Keeping An Eye on the Issues
The Chamber Team is keeping an eye out on local issues so that we may keep you informed on issues of local and regional importance. Here is what we kept an eye on in March and early April.
West Orange Municipalities and the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission Luncheon on Thursday, 3/10 – Stina D’Uva and Krista Carter hosted town and city managers and Brian Walters, Executive VP and Executive Vice President/COO, Mike Boborff. The discussion centered on building upon the existing relationships to improve local economic development efforts in West Orange.
ULI Central Florida – Economic Centers, Jobs and Real Estate: Building the Future in Partnership with UCG Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies on Thursday, 3/17 – Stina D’Uva and Jim Densmore, WOCC Chairman 2010, attended this lively discussion on Central Florida’s economic drivers and the future of our region. One of the featured speakers was the former Mayor of Pittsburgh, Tom Murphy who discussed the efforts that Pittsburgh undertook to
emerge from a depressed economy with the loss of most of the steel market to a thriving diverse economy. The entire presentation will soon be available on the UCF web site under the Metropolitan Center section.
Orange County Economic & Jobs Summit/East on Friday, 3/18– Stina D’Uva attended this summit that was the second in the series of opportunities to assess the barriers to job growth and economic development. It took place at the Winter Park Civic Center, with Shelley Lauten of myregion.org as the facilitator. Visit www.ocfl .net for summit information.
West Orange Aviation Authority(WOAA) Monthly Board Meeting on Wednesday, 3/23– Stina D’Uva attended the meeting which took place at the City of Ocoee. WOAA Chairman Haggard stated that FDOT would be meeting to review the feasibility study. The main discussion for the meeting revolved around a purchase agreement between WOAA and Orlando North Airpark for up to 224 acres. Orlando North Airport will also donate a runway to the project. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 20th at 10:00am at the city of Winter Garden.
Pine Hills Business Redevelopment Task Force – Monday, 3/28 – attended by Susan Fortini, board appointment and Tim Haberkamp, WOCC Board member – The West Orange Trail Extension to Barnett Park was approved to receive federal money in the year 2014. The Task Force is still trying to fi gure out how to defi ne the Neighborhood Improvement District (NID) boundaries so that a contiguous area is created. The Task Force submits the NID recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners in April.
SR 429 Economic Working Group – Wednesday, 4/6 – attended by Stina D’Uva and included Tanya Gerhartz of the city of Winter Garden, Russ Wagner of the city of Ocoee, Anita Gentz of Westside Tech, and hosted by Dr. Mackay of the University of Florida, IFAS. Meeting of the Minds by Stina D’Uva
Two Minds are better than one, imagine a room full! This statement proved to be so true at our most recent, “Meeting of the Minds” event hosted by the Holiday Inn Express on West Colonial Drive. This event was an opportunity to gather many new members from the past year to meet with a couple of distinguished Past Chairmen of the Chamber, Jim Densmore and Russ Salerno, current board Chairman Michael Waldrop, Keith Bradford - VP Downtown Disney, Stina D’Uva and Dorcas Dillard. The purpose of the event was simple and asked two questions of the nearly 25 attendees, “what is a good lead for you?” and “what keeps you up at night?” The excitement in the room was tremendous. These two simple questions sparked ideas, collaboration, camaraderie and most importantly, chamber members doing business with chamber members. If you are interested in attending the next Meeting of the Minds, give me a call.
