WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?
At The Trafford College Group we will support you at every step of your apprenticeship. Our START Recruitment Team will even help you find your ideal apprenticeship placement (for details on START, see page 6).
As apprenticeships focus on work based learning they provide you with the experience and knowledge that employers look for when they are recruiting. This means that for the majority of your Apprenticeship you will be based in the workplace with your employer. This usually means that you will spend four days a week at work and one day a week
at college but depending on the type of programme you’re studying this may work out a bit differently and we will confirm this with you before you start on your programme.

“Coming to college is very dif ferent to school. You get treated like an adult and your tutors place a lot of trust in you and your abilities. I’d definitely recommend studying at Trafford College and especially on an apprenticeship. This is definitely the course for me.”
Freya
Apprenticeships are for people aged 16 or over, who are living in the UK and would like to gain hands-on experience in a particular field of study, whilst studying towards a national industry recognised qualification.

CharlotteWorkforce Strategy Support Officer with Trafford Council
After achieving excellent GCSE grades at school, Charlotte was led to believe that the path best-suited to her was the traditional route of A Levels and University. Here she explains why she eventually chose to embark on a completely different journey.
“I’d always been very academic, but while I was studying for my A Levels, my whole personality changed. I became introverted, quiet and stressed. I knew I wasn’t in the right environment to reach my full potential; I was excelling in my practical subjects, but not enjoying the academic side as much. I soon realised that maybe university wasn’t for me, so my dad supported me in seeking out an apprenticeship. He’d started his career as an apprentice mechanic and now he owns his own business, which was hugely inspirational for me.
My apprenticeship has helped me in so many ways. In my current job role I have been introduced to many different areas of HR and learned things that I never thought I could learn. I have found a love for Human Resources and Events Management that I never knew I had.
My skills as a team player and communicator have grown significantly during my time at Trafford Council. I have worked in HR for almost 2 years and after completing my Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship, I secured a role as a Workforce Strategy Support Officer. Earlier this year I started my Level 3 CIPD apprenticeship and I am also trained as an apprenticeship ambassador.
My short term aims include completing my Level 3 CIPD and hopefully moving onto my Level 5. My ultimate aim is to have my own HR consultancy for small businesses to buy into. Starting an apprenticeship has definitely been the best decision I ever made.”

StaceyPharmacy TechnicianPrestwich Hospital – NHS
After raising her family, Stacey was ready to return to a career, but first she needed to return to education. Worried about how she would afford to give up her job and pursue her dreams, she explains how an apprenticeship turned out to be the ideal route to taking the first steps back into the classroom. “I was working as a PA within an NHS trust when the opportunity of becoming a student again presented itself. A Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician position had become available, but I knew there would be lots of applicants as it’s a very sought after post. I was amazed when I was told I’d been successful. It meant that whilst attending college one day a week, I could continue in employment, earning a wage and gaining qualifications. If I qualified, I could register professionally as a Pharmacy Technician.
Returning to education as a mature student was challenging, especially as I had a family to look after and had to find quiet time to study, but I knew it was for a fixed period of time. I found learning much more satisfying as a mature student; I enjoyed the subjects and wanted to learn so much more. I did lots of independent research to enhance my knowledge and get the best grades I could. I was a quiet and relatively shy person, but I found college less daunting than I imagined.
I have now gained a professional registration and an amazing job which I never thought possible. There are lots of opportunities - it’s definitely a career with many paths I could embark on in the future. I love pharmacology, so ultimately I think I’d like to work for a manufacturer in a clinical research or trials post.
My apprenticeship has opened so many doors.

IT’S A SECURE OPTIONYou’ll need to check your individual
contract but you should have the
same rights as other employees, with
a contract of employment and real
opportunities for future progression.
YOU’LL GET A WAGEThe national minimum wage for
apprentices starts at £3.70 although
a lot of employers pay higher than
this. The average weekly wage is
between £120 - £200.
YOU CAN AFFORD ITUnlike most ways of gaining formal
training and practical experience,
apprenticeships are paid for by
the government or your employer,
so they’re great if university isn’t an
option financially.
YOU’LL GET A QUALIFICATIONAll apprenticeships must include an
element of training. They should be
designed to give you on and off-
the-job training, which will lead to a
qualification.
