Apprenticeship guide for learners

Have you considered an Apprenticeship?

What’s in it for me?If you have a job, you will be able to earn money while learning your chosen trade by coming into college one day a week. On some courses attendance at college is not required.

What will it cost me?If you are 16 -18 it will cost you and your employer nothing.

Do I need special skills to be an Apprentice? No, just commitment. Good results in your GCSEs (especially Maths and English) will help you get onto the course you want and could reduce some of the qualifi cations you may have to take as an Apprentice.

What if I do not have a job? There are a number of ways of searching for Apprenticeship vacancies e.g. local newspapers, sending a well written CV with a good covering letter to employers (please do ask us for advice) in your preferred sector, or registering and searching the Vacancy Matching Service at www.apprenticeships.org.uk. If you require any further information please contact us on the numbers at the back of this booklet.

What is included in the Apprenticeship Framework?

NVQ (National Vocational Qualifi cation) The Apprentice completes a portfolio based on their experience in college and at work. They receive visits at their workplace from their Assessor, who observes them carrying out specifi c tasks, to ascertain their competence. The employer must allow the learner to work on different aspects of the job to enable this assessment. Our Co-ordinator and Assessor can help ensure you are offering the correct type of work to your Apprentice.

The Technical Certifi cate (some courses do not require this qualifi cation): this qualifi cation is carried out in college, or in the workplace on some frameworks, through classroom activities, workshops and online tests. The Apprentice will be required to pass each unit to complete the qualifi cation. They may also be required to attend college on additional days for specifi c workshop activities or tests but this is kept to a minimum.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities - These exist to help Apprentices and employers understand their employment rights and responsibilities and rights related to equal opportunities, health and safety and to understand the safe learner concept.

Additional framework qualifi cations may be required by some sectors, these include:Paediatric 1st aid ChildcareAM2 Electro-TechAbrasive Wheel Trowel

Employers we are proud to work with include:

TRANSFERABLE SKILLSIncludes the Key Skills qualifi cations (Application of Number and Communication) or the Functional Skills (English and Mathematics). FOR FURTHER DETAILS PLEASE SEE PAGE 6

Additional informationPersonal Protective Equipment. The Apprentice must attend college with the correct PPE equipment, otherwise they will not be allowed into certain areas of the college and will miss out on vital experience. The Assessors also expect to see this equipment worn on site. Your Apprentice will be given a ‘KIT LIST’ during Induction and reminded about using it throughout the course.

Reviews An Apprenticeship Co-ordinator will carry out regular reviews (between 10-12 weeks) with you and your Apprentice. These reviews are important because they ensure that:• The continued health, safety and welfare of the Apprentice is catered for. • The Apprentice is progressing and is given advice and guidance on the completion of their qualifi cation. • The Apprentice and employer are up-to-date with any changes in the qualifi cation system.• Regular and effective communication is maintained between the college, employer and Apprentice. • The employer is supporting the Apprentice in the completion of their qualifi cation. • The contractual obligations on all sides are being adhered to.

Absenteeism from College If your Apprentice does not attend college we will inform you at the earliest opportunity. Due to the time restrictions of the day release course, we ask that you allow your Apprentice to attend college but if this is not possible, please notify us as soon as possible.

Employer ContributionEmployers of learners aged 19 and over will be required to make a contribution towards the Apprenticeship course. Please ask for details.
