AROUND THE AREAGATEWAY TO NEW ENGLAND

New Haven, just ten minutes away from campus, is a city where arts and cultural activities flourish and coexist with science and business. Settled in 1638 and rich in history and heritage, New Haven is proud of its past, prouder of its present, and actively planning for its future. The city is a manufacturing center, a deep-water harbor, a major arts center, and a college town (with seven colleges and universities in the immediate area), and is often referred to as the “Gateway to New England.”

New Haven is home to world-class, award-winning theaters such as the Shubert and the Long Wharf Theatre as well as a number of renowned museums, including the Peabody Museum of Natural History and the Eli Whitney Museum. In addition, New Haven is very well known for its food! In fact, Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria was recently named the #1 pizza in the country! And don’t forget to visit Louis’ Lunch, the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich and the oldest hamburger restaurant still operating in the United States today (opened in 1895).
