Types of Application Software

• General-Purpose Software – most popular application program and are not specific to any organization; they can be used by anyone.

Custom-written software: also referred to as tailor-made or bespoke software. This type of software can be general-purpose software that has been custom-made in order to perform specific tasks for the user.

Examples: word processing (Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect), spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel, Corel Quattro Pro), database (Microsoft Access, FileMaker Pro), presentation(Microsoft PowerPoint, Corel Presentation), drawing(Microsoft Paint, Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop) .

Custom-written software: also referred to as tailor-made or bespoke software. This type of software can be general-purpose software that has been custom-made in order to perform specific tasks for the user.

Specialized Software: is software written only for a specific task. This type of software is exclusive to a particular company or organization; They are more costly.

Examples software used for airline reservations, software used by air-traffic controllers, software used for accounting, software used for designing (computer-aided design)

Integrated Software: is already installed software that computers are sold with. This type of software brings all the major application software (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation) together into a single software package.

Example Microsoft Works and Apple Works.

PROCESSING MODES

Processing involves accepting data and converting it into output or information.

What is processing?

Processing is completed using the following methods:

Batch processing (offline processing): occurs when data collected over a period of time then grouped together and processed at a certain point, such as weekly or monthly. Examples utility bills

and salary

Online Processing: is the method for processing data in which the data is collected and processed immediately. The user can interact directly with the computer at any time and the data is updated right away (however, there is still a slight delay). Examples: ATM machines,

online games, flight reservations.

Real-time Processing: is the method for inputting, processing and outputting data continuously, and is used to control activities as they happen; however, data is processed in a small time period.Examples: Example flight simulation – the data needs to reach user as quickly as possible so they can react accordingly.

Time-sharing: is the method of processing that allows many users to use a computer system simultaneously. This is mainly used in earlier mainframe computers.
