Asearly as the late 18th century, explorers began trekkingthe valley along the Mojave River. The Spanishmissionary Father Francisco Garces, the explorerJedediah Smith and government topographer John C.

Fremont were among the earliest non-natives to the area, but itwas the discovery of silver and gold that brought large numbers ofsettlers.

The area witnessed many struggles between the originalinhabitants and the later settlers. In January 1867, the last Native-American battle was fought a few miles east of what is now AppleValley, at a place called Chimney Rock. Today, people of manyethnic cultures live together in the peaceful surroundings of thevalley, and the legacy of these cultures is evident throughout thearea. Chimney Rock is marked by a state registered historicalmonument, and the old mine shafts canstill be seen in the surrounding hills.

Mrs. Ursula M. Poates (one of thoseearly arrivals, settling around 1893) iscredited with having named the areaApple Valley. Mrs. Poates promoted realestate around the “Gateway to theGolden Land of Opportunity.” Thecolorful and dynamic woman advertisedthe 640-acre “City of Apple” in numerousnewspapers. Mrs. Poates claimed that thearea was called “Appleton Valley” at thetime. She is quoted as saying, “There wereapples being grown along the river, but notby the ‘ton,’ so I just called it AppleValley.”

Mrs. Poates’ efforts were later overwhelmedby the federal government, which openedthousands of acres to homesteaders shortlyafter the dawn of the 20th century.

By 1914, apple growers were earning $350to $500 per acre of fruit. Within a year anda half, the state legislature and the federalgovernment had authorized the VictorValley Water Project (the largest in thenation at that time), and the Santa FeRailway began to lay double trackage toserve the anticipated needs of the area.

On April 17, 1917, the United States enteredWorld War I. Soon thereafter, young farmers, homesteaders, dam-builders and cowhandsbegan to march off to fight instead ofdeveloping the area.

The years following World War I brought many changes thataffected the area’s residents. The orchards suffered from adevastating fungus, thecost of operatingelectricity-driven waterpumps increased, andapples and other fruitsfrom the PacificNorthwest arrived inCalifornia markets.

Many orchards died, and the valleyreturned to its

History

Page 7: Apple Valley CA Community Profile

original landscape of quiet desert beauty. Finally (from 1944-46),frosts, heat and hail fell upon the surviving orchards. For the nextseven years, firewood – the only thing growers had left to sell – wascarried across Cajon Pass for burning in the fireplaces of LosAngeles.

In 1945, Newton T. Bass and Bernard (Bud) J. Westlund, oil fieldwildcatters, became the area’s primary developers. Drilling in theApple Valley area, Bass found something even more valuable thanthe oil he was searching for: water. Bass and Westlund bought20,000 acres east of Victorville from the Union Pacific Railroadand decided to develop a community.

The men pioneered land development, turning the acreage thatthey bought into a recreational and retirement “bedroom”community. This development has made Apple Valley one of thedesert’s most prosperous areas.

With extensive advertising and sales offices in other cities, AppleValley lot sales reached the 5,000 mark within five years. Followingthe Apple Valley example, developers built golf courses and other

recreational facilities, and modern homesbegan to replace theweather-beaten boardshacks left behind by

the homesteaders. The boom of schools attested to Apple Valley’sattraction. In 1909, the Apple Valley School District had to“borrow” one pupil in order to have the minimum seven studentsthat were required to hold class; between 1949 and 1958, threeelementary schools and a junior high school were built andexpanded.

Known as a retreat for movie stars and the sight of several movieproductions, Apple Valley became world famous. Amongcelebrities who came up to make movies or to just get away from itall were Red Skelton, Fred MacMurray, Jonathon Winters, CaesarRomero, Anthony Quinn, Dorothy Malone, Raymond Burr,Chuck Connors, Lawrence Welk, John Charles Thomas, DeanMartin, Dale Robertson and Desi Arnaz.

Bass, who died in 1983, was once asked why he wanted to build acity out in the middle of nowhere. He said, “I had the vision tosee, the faith to believe and the courage to do it.”

Apple Valley Today! The Town of Apple Valley is not just a place. Apple Valley is anexperience. Here a family can have a real home, uncrowded andsun drenched. The air is clean and the neighbors friendly. Thecommunity was incorporated on November 28,1988 with apopulation of just 41,000. The Victor Valley, in which AppleValley is located, has a population of more than 300,000.

Location & TranspoationT

hekey to Apple Valley’s history and current prosperity istransportation. With the Mojave River and the CajonPass running through it, our area is the natural corridorto Southern California. Spanish priests, Mormon

settlers and the railroads knew our area was the safest and fastestway to travel to and from Southern California. In fact, theexistence of water in the Mojave River had made this a naturalroute for Native Americans over the centuries. The coincidence ofthe location of Cajon Pass near the source of the Mojave River is ahistory- making combination.

In 1769, Lt. Pedro Fages led the first Spanish exploration throughthe Cajon Pass. The following year, Juan Bautista de Anza openedthe Santa Fe Trail across the desert from the missions of Arizonaand Sonora, and Francisco Garces led a party up the ColoradoRiver to Needles and across the desert to the Victor Valley in 1776.Explorer John Fremont traveled throughout much of the territory. In 1844, he returned to Washington after traveling across theCajon Pass and along the “Mohahve” River.

Eventually, the railroad came to Victor Valley. Overcoming adifficult task of engineering, the first track climbed and woundover Cajon Pass from San Bernardino to arrive in 1883. Built bythe California Southern Railroad (later AT&SF) under thesupervision of L. N. Victor, the line reached the Atlantic & Pacific(UPRR) junction at Barstow/Daggett in 1885. In 1923, the roadcrossing the Pass was paved for the first time.

The area has always been known as the gateway to North America, and, as the facilities become more congested in SouthernCalifornia, business and industry are turning their attentionnorthward. Less congestion means faster movement of goods, andsavings to companies who have to compete in the national andinternational market.

Nestled into the Sycamore Rocks at the east end ofApple Valley, Sunset Hills Memorial Park is not onlyone of the most scenic areas of the Valley, it is quicklybecoming a tourist destination. The cemetery’s

popularity is partly due to its most famous residents, King of theCowboys Roy Rogers and his wife, Queen of the West Dale Evans.Dale Evans so firmly believed in Sunset Hills, that she spent manyhours there after the death of Roy. Dale would sit at the RogersFamily Estate Garden overlooking the valley, working on some ofher many books.

Shortly after the passing of Roy, Dale approached Sunset HillsFounder Chet Hitt about building a chapel in honor of her latehusband. Hitt responded that no tribute to Roy would becomplete without mention of Dale and the idea for the Roy Rogers- Dale Evans Sunset Chapel was born. He made a promise to Daleon that day, and on February 19th, 2007, that promise wasfulfilled.

Today, the Roy Rogers - Dale EvansSunset Chapel is a place of Celebrationthat Dale would have been proud of. Infact, at the Chapel Grand Opening in2007, Roy “Dusty” Rogers, Jr. praisedChet Hitt for maintaining the “spirit of lifeand celebration” that meant so much to hisMother. In addition to the “Celebrations ofLife” which the Chapel was built for, more

and more couples are choosing to celebrate the beginning of theirlives together, with a wedding on the Chapel grounds. Charitiesand other local organizations have found that the Chapel, with itsstate-of-the-art technology, knowledgeable and caring staff andflexible layout, is the perfect location for their events.

Sunset Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary is nationally recognizedas one of the most innovative and beautiful funeral facilitiesanywhere, and national media and funeral industry executivesoften visit the park “to see what Chet Hitt’s been up to.” Using thenatural rockscape of the park as well as artificial rocks and grass, estate gardens and mausoleums have been designed which allowthe families of Sunset Hills to own the most unique cemeteryproperty available today.

Photos of all of the properties of Sunset Hills, as well as serviceschedules, online obituaries and live webcasts are available on thecompany Web site at www.sunsethills.cc.

Apple Valley was founded on a strong traditionof community spirit and the belief of neighborhelping neighbor. While this old-fashionedtradition may have died out in some

communities around the country, it is still strong inApple Valley.

The community’s churches and worship centers have been leadersin keeping this tradition alive – through words and throughexample. Local churches tackle community projects by partneringwith other churches to get the job done. A multi-faith, after-schoolkids’ care program, neighborhood clean-up projects and aninterfaith thrift shop (to raise money for low-income families) areamong the projects that our faith community has taken ontogether.

Area houses of worship range from the large, well-established tothe small and intimate. Families and friends can gather in beautifulhouses of worship for most faiths with over 180 congregations, including Catholic and Protestant (denominational and nondenominational).
