APPENDIX B. LISTINGS OF CSSC CODES WITHIN SUBJECT-AREA CATEGORIES

This appendix presents the subject field taxonomy that provides the structure for grouping thecourses. The lists that follow identify the CSSC codes in each subject-area category. These categories arereferred to as "stubs" because they are associated with row labels, or stubs, in the tables.

The subject area categories are organized according to the Secondary School Taxonomy (SST).1

Exhibit B-1 displays the taxonomy. We have, however, added two categories to the second level of the SST:Computer-related Studies and Special Education. The Computer-related Studies category is part of theAcademic group and has three subcategories: Clerical and Data Entry, Computer Applications, and ComputerScience. Many of the computer-related courses also appear in various math and vocational categories. They arecounted only once when calculating totals that include multiple categories.

The Special Education category is part of the Personal/Other Courses group and includes a largenumber of courses that are usually open only to students with Individualized Educational Programs (IEP).These courses can be found in stub 1500. Many of these special education courses are also included in thevarious subject area categories. They are, however, counted only once when calculating totals and subtotals.

In addition to adding the two new categories, we have split the category Drama/Dance into twocategories: Drama and Dance. We have also made a number of minor adjustments associated with new coursesor courses that did not appear in the transcripts being analyzed using previous versions of the SST. Forexample, we added Cell and Molecular Biology, Other (260400) to the Biology category and DesktopPublishing (480271), a course introduced in the 1994 HSTS, to the Trade and Industry Category. We have alsochanged the name of the category "Advanced Calculus" to "Calculus" since it contains all the CSSC codes forcalculus courses.

We have also added a number of subcategories to some of the categories in the Academic group. These subcategories do not change the definition of any of the existing categories or subcategories, but providea means for summarizing the data at a level that has proved useful in previous transcript studies. For example, because we believe they may be of special analytic interest, we have added a number of categories forremedial/below grade level courses and categories for AP courses. The new subcategories are marked with anasterisk in the exhibit.

Education, Office of Planning, Budget, and Evaluation, U.S. Department of Education (Berkeley: MPR Associates, Inc., February, 1989).

  • B-2

Note that the categories are hierarchical in nature. That is, codes in a subcategory also appear inthe appropriate higher-order category. For example, "AP Calculus" is included in "Calculus" and in"Mathematics." For example, the category "English" includes "Etymology" (230412) and "Vocational English"(230156), which are not included in any of the subcategories of "English."

The Hierarchical Listing that follows indicates in outline form the categories and subcategories. The Detailed Stub List, which follows the Hierarchical Listing, is presented in the same order as the HierarchicalListing. The Detailed Stub List is an exhaustive list of every code included in each category and eachsubcategory. It contains all valid CSSC codes whether or not they appear in the current study. Previously usedcodes that have been dropped or reassigned have been included for the sake of completeness. This version ofthe SST can be applied to any study using the CSSC without the need to add additional codes.
