Embracing a life of contemplative prayer and
merciful works, the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia warmly share their Benedictine Charism with
all who seek peace through understanding and a deepening
spirituality. Living their charism daily the Sisters also
support two ministries focused upon helping our most
vulnerable populations become self-sufficient and productive — Transitional Housing BARN, a program for homeless mothers
and their children, and BEACON, an adult literacy
program focused on helping low-income immigrants learn
English. Their Benedictine Pastoral Center offers
workshops and spiritual direction to help individuals
deepen their personal relationships with God. And
their two schools — Saint Gertrude High School in
Richmond and Linton Hall School in Bristow — celebrated
90 years of education rich in Benedictine tradition in 2013
and continue to promote a balance of spiritual, academic and personal exploration that enriches the lives of students,
parents, faculty and staff.
Thank you for sharing in our mission and entrusting
us with your friendship. Your generosity to the Annual Appeal helps to support our life of quiet prayer
and reflection and enables us to continue our merciful works
throughout the year.

Discerning whether God is calling one to live as a monastic requires prayer, courage, humility, effort,
and careful reflection. This is not an easy life but it is a deeply rewarding one.
Having been blessed with hearing my calling at a young age, I have spent many peaceful and fulfilling
years here as a part of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia. I know that for many others the path to this life took many unexpected turns and diversions along the way. Some join us as young women while others hear the call much later in life. We feel extremely blessed in welcoming each one as she responds to God’s voice in her heart.
Your friendship makes it possible for us to continue reaching out to all women who seek to devote
themselves to God through prayer, community and simplicity.
As a monastic community, we follow The Rule of Saint Benedict understanding that our life is devoted
to joyfully serving God, one another and our neighbors – friends and strangers alike. We seek deeper meaning in our everyday existence recognizing that Christ, present in all our interactions, shows us the way of life through love.
Community, for us, extends beyond our monastery grounds as we embrace those most in need of our
love through our supported ministries. Just as each Sister brings unique gifts to our religious communi-ty, so she shares those with others through acts of kindness and thoughtful prayer. Together, we bring your needs and the needs of others to the timeless praise of God.
Thank you for joining us on our monastic journey. Your partnership through prayer, service and finan-
cial support is essential to our life of praise and peace. We hold you and your family in our grateful hearts. Peace in Christ,
Sister Cecilia Dwyer, OSB
